Is Apple Working on Apple Glass?

I find it hard to believe that Apple would leave the future of eyewear tech for Google to snatch up. Especially with tech they already have like Siri and their experience with hardware product design. They'll probably make a much better looking set of glasses, or even figure out a way to have it on one side only without a bridge.

Does anyone think that Apple is at this moment secretly working on one-upping Google, and that Apple Glass is the secret project they're working on right now? A smartwatch is anticlimactic and lame at this point.

On the other hand, working on Apple Glass would be like a "me too" type thing, as opposed to the "revolutionary product out of nowhere" approach they've taken in recent years.

I doubt they are. I don't expect Glass to take off at all, why would Apple take such a gamble?

They'll release a watch and a TV in the near future.

They're working on a watch; there are patents for one already.

Wearable computing is the future, but they will dabble with a watch and let Google deal with all the privacy backlashes and first-gen tech woes that will happen once Glass becomes a real thing.

After the dust settles, they will enter the market with their own, polished solution.

I'm sure if Google Glasses take off (and I'm not optimistic) Apple will "invent" something "magical" a few years from now.

What privacy storms?

Apple has patents on HMDs. They've had them for years, and made some new ones last year - so yeah, they're at the very least looking into it.

It would be foolish for Apple to think along these terms. If you had a multi-billion dollar company, would you not consider making a product to compete with a product that is in global news everytime an update on development is made? If you just think "oh, it's not going to take off probably, because I think it's dumb" - you'd be doing a poor job as a consumer electronic company.

Yes, you just don't ever hear about most of the projects companies prototype, especially with Apple you're not going to ever hear anything unless they think they've nailed it and it appeals to the mass-market.

They will probably wait for the glass to bomb and then do it right or not do it at all. Remember when people were saying where is the Apple Netbook? Where are netbooks now? Dead.

Apple is not going to jump into a market too early. Glass will not be a commercial success.

I really don't think the Glass is going to bomb. Google is approaching it well. I think if it's priced appropriately, it'll be successful enough to begin the iteration process.

But Google has invested WAY too much money to make Glass v1, let it bomb and then give up. That seems to be what people think is going to happen. but with the level of investment being put into the device, I just don't see it.

Sure, but it won't be as manly as Google Glass, so no thanks.

They've definitely got something similar going in R&D but I'd be surprised if they would consider it as a viable product for a few years yet.

These supposed privacy storms, won't even be a light drizzle.

If cameras aren't allowed, you will be told to put it away, just like you do with your mobile devices today. Its a pair of glasses, not a permanent attachment to your head.

Apple's iGlasses will look cooler and more hip, and the media will go crazy over them.

I don't think the general public is ready to attach a device of Google's questionable design so prominently to their face, while replacing other more attractive eye-wear options if they wear glasses.

Apple might have a better chance of convincing the masses if they really concentrate on marketing the device. I don't see Google having that kind of sway.

It will definitely be interesting seeing them try though. Google has been planning all of this seemingly from the ground up. Google Now uses a lot of data and information that is afforded to them by all the services they own. Maps, Google Search, Google Wallet, Gmail, Google Translate, Google Goggles, Knowledge graph, YouTube and more. The whole concept of Now is not something Apple will be able to so easily imitate, but they absolutely need to, because Now is amazing.

The entire 'present information when relevant' binge that Google is on is something they are pretty uniquely designed to conquer.

Always though eye wear is pretty hard to design, in terms of making something the the mass market would like such as wayfarer or aviator.

I reckon it will eventually come in all shapes and sizes. Likely licensed out, or through deals made with a lot of eye wear companies like the Ray Ban deal they apparently struck some time back.

It's impressiv tech. But it's horrible to think of lots of people using it. Just the thought of peope talking to their glasses is too ridiculous to even consider. Imagine all these people giving vocal instructions to their glasses in public. To me that sounds like hell on earth.

not sure what we will call it, we have bluetools, but ... glasstools? I have no idea.

They'll be constantly looking up as well. Lol.

Yep. This.

If they're working in a watch, it's a much more iterative step towards wearable computing than glasses. You can "escape" a watch or a smartphone if you wish... it's not quite as simple with an interface that's an inch away from your eye. If it becomes a battle between Google Glass vs iWatch, I suspect iWatch will win.

Sounds about the same as people talking on bluetooth headsets in public
