Is Epic Mickey 2 really that bad even compared to EM1?

I loved Epic Mickey 1 when it came out on Wii three years ago even with it's bad camera and other sort of problems,I know many people didn't like it and felt disappointed but I had so much fun with the story and the gameplay and I was happy when they announced the sequel

then it came out and the reviews and general opinions (as well as using money for other games) killed all the hype I had (actually I was losing that after every video or information) and didn't buy it

so now I was considering about buying it at cheap price (~20 euro) and probably for Wii U, but will I like it? it was really THAT BAD even for someone who liked the first one?

I sort of liked it. Yeah, camera was awful and it was fairly easy, but there are a lot of sidequests and some parts of it are fun (songs).
Solid, no particular improvement except for graphics obviously
Budget price I'd recommend it

If you liked the first, I dont see why you wouldn't like the second since its more of that but with voice acting and a occasionally dumb as hell AI partner. Oswald needs specific tasks completed first in order to do his part of the puzzle, and the game can be awful at telegraphing to you what to do- case in point the tutorial where the game tells Oswald to shock a thing, but never tells Mickey to pull a switch to reveal it.

Play it on the wii if you do play it, using the paint/thinner with a regular controller is hot garbage.

I never had a problem with Oswald's a.i on the Wii version. Personally, I found EM2 to be pretty dang good. Just make sure to get the wii version since the other versions are jacked up, especially the Wii u one.

I don't have a Wii anymore (sold last year and bought a 360) but doesn't the Wii U version support Wiimote and Nunchuck?

I don't know if I can stand to a terrible framerate and a shitty necessary companion but well, for a cheap price I might try anyway

Does the Wii U not have wii bc?

The Wii U port has awkward button mapping, lacks off screen play, doesnt support the wii remote, and has awful framerate. Its probably the worst way to play the game

yeah, I forgot about bc

what a waste anyway, Wii U version could have been the best one for this kind of game :\

I will never try the sequel after it left me the most disappointed of the generation. I don't understand the logic of making a dark and depressing Mickey Mouse game. The happy beauty of Castles of Illusion makes me even more disappointed in what Epic Mickey could have been.

It is sad that outside of Nintendo the only happy and light games will be remakes of old games. We can't have a happy game anymore because everyone is so cynical now.

These replies are terrible. EM2 is horrible whether you liked the first one or not. bad voice acting, even worse (mandatory) co-op. Gameplay is irrelevant cos those two things are that bad. I dont even know what the levels are like.

I liked EM1 too for the record. I think it was underrated. Reminded me of the n64 platformers of old.

Well, not talking about the game of the topic but this type of thinking is disturbing to say the least.

They're both terribly underwhelming and a massive case of wasted potential considering the initial concept.

Want a decent Mickey game?

They're both terrible games, especially Epic Mickey after hearing what the final product could have been and how it was changed.

Gameplay is really bad. Objectives aren't clear and are extremely obscure. You'll wonder when you solve something and ask yourself "how does that make any sense?" or "How would i know that would be the solution?" There are puzzles when they aren't supposed to be puzzles just because its that hard to figure out what to do and it's designed that poorly. Camera is bad slow and sluggish and doesn't help.

The game is a chore just to figure out where you go or what to do. Things aren't explained more than once and when they are they don't make any sense anyway as its just mumbo jumbo bunch of words that someone thought of when they were on the toilet. No thought has gone into the gameplay. Art is the only good thing about it but don't let that fool you.

The game is no fun basically. Its frustrating and extremely poorly designed. One of the biggest disappointments recently. Warren Spector should be ashamed of this mess. He gets way too much cred because he did one ground breaking game for its time (Deus Ex). Which admittedly is nothing special today.

Castle of Illusion isn't really a "happy beauty" game. I would describe it more as an adventure, an old-fashioned Mickey-style adventure. It has its grim moments. The ancient ruins of the storm level are decayed and harrowing (even more so in the original game). The castle and clock tower really feel threatening, just like some of the hazards in Mickey's old black and white adventures. Bright and colorful environments full of dangerous toys and killer clowns have that element of weirdness/insanity. Even the first area has a forest of giant spiders, bats, and ghosts.

It's not really scary, but within the context of Mickey's adventures, I think it is appropriately dark. It's a great balance.

Nah its dark comical in a Halloween for kids kind of way.

I just remember getting another boring fetch quest in Epic Mickey from some old time cartoon that said "nobody visits me anymore". Just everything about the game was sad and depressing.

People are so mad at Epic Mickey its inducing a Spiderman 3 effect

Is the 3DS version any different or better from the Wii U?

I've seen a lot of people on gaf say "Its bad, but hey at least its not the console versions of Epic Mickey!" and having played it over the weekend... i cant agree, its tedious and awful

the presentation is really good which just make the bad gameplay stand out even more

You know, i bought it anyway (on sale) having enjoyed epic mickey 1 just enough to want a bit more, but it really was quite a bit worse. I did get some enjoyment out of the 3DS title, though its rather dull most of the time.

I've tried to play Deus Ex several times, before and after Epic Mickey, and I'd have to agree with him. It's not the mindblowing revelation I was promised.

It's rough around the edges, if nothing else.

Okay let not be stupid and start bashing on Warren Spector, just because he made two bad games.

The 3DS version is different but I have heard that it isn't any better.

Epic Mickey 2 (Wii version) is fundamentally a good game. BUT...

1. The Wii U port is rubbish.

2. Taking the game multi-format was the dumbest thing Disney could have done. It's not the first time fans have abandoned a series as a way of showing their displeasure with regards to a publisher revoking exclusivity. (See de Blob 2 as another recent example.)

I recommend the OP looks up the fully rendered cutscenes on YT. Playing the game is just a chore and eventually unrewarding.

Contrast that with the majority of replies whenever the old concept art is posted, with most people lamenting that Epic Mickey didn't go far enough, was watered down and too nice compared to the really dark, intriguing concept art.

Different strokes, I suppose. :p

Epic Mickey's mediocrity and missed potential has nothing to do with the silly, pubescent grimdark concept art people spew out whenever the game is brought up. It could have been a mass reinvention of an icon for the 21st century by an industry vet; and it wasn't.
