Is it ok to drop a game you can’t get into?

I have bought some games digitally when they were on sale, but have come to the realization that I don’t really enjoy them as much as I thought I would. I try to stick to the adherence of ‘If it isn’t fun, what’s the point?’ when it comes to games, but I feel obligated to at least finish a game that I have bought, especially if it is digital. I don’t want to feel like I have wasted money so frivolously.

The thing is, if I’m not having fun and only spending time finishing a game to justify to myself the cost, then I think it would be better to just drop the game and cut my losses. Time being the only thing you can’t get back and whatnot.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

No. You must play every game you buy to 100% completion, and be as miserable as possible while you do so.

It's okay.

Just skip them, don't try to "force", you will hate them even more, and worst, just lose your time taking no pleasure.

Objectif number one before anything when playing video game is to enjoy your time.
You should not worry about the other. But yes, when you spent a lot and the game is shit, it's hard.

I think I ought to drop Assassin's Creed Valhalla right now :lollipop_neutral:
God what a piece of shit game
It's one of those games where the open-world limitations become real obvious early on.

And I hated how you aquire new gear. Such a stupid and illogical system imo

I thought AC Odyssey was one of those generic open worlds typical of Ubisoft, but Valhalla's so much more insanely grindy, and somehow every mechanic's a downgrade from Odyssey. I miss having hordes of bounty hunters after me.
The gear system feels really out of place. Why does this viking game have so little loot? Shouldn't vikings have way more loot? I had plenty of loot in Odyssey! Honestly, Odyssey didn't hold a candle to classic AC, but Valhalla really has me missing it. Such a soulless game.

But in all honesty, if you don't like a game, you shouldn't force yourself to keep playing.

Conversely, it was my first AC, and I enjoyed it so much that it got me into open worlds games (of which I had avoided previously). After Valhalla, I played Fenix Rising, and then Odyssey. I have Origins, but yet to play. All great games.

Yea I did this with Guardians of the Galaxy. I wasn’t feeling it about half way through and dropped it. I had a similar experience with The Force Unleashed and Alone in the Dark. I dropped Deus Ex Human Revolution. Sometimes a game starts off great, but you aren’t feeling it. No sense spending more time just to say you beat it. I thought I’d finish Daemon X Machina. It felt far too repetitive with little change and customization. I dropped it. I loved AC6 though.

I think this is normal. I was this way with No More Heroes. I had that back in Wii. It was interesting, but I didn’t see a reason to finish it. Deadly Premonition is/was the same. It was unique, cool for a while, but I dropped them after my 1st or 2nd time booting the game.

I feel you! Hopefully their new game changes things up a bit more.

Do you play on PC? Because you can unlock all the DLC premium weapons/gear-sets for free with a program called cheat engine. Makes the AC fashion a bit more fun

Of course! Time is very valuable, so best not to waste it. I've been in situations like yours where I've bought games and didn't enjoy them. Too late to get a refund for some, so they're just sitting there in my Steam library :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Of course it’s okay.

But man… having limited funs growing up for maybe a game or two a year…. I just can’t not finish a game when I start. (Like a full price 60/70 buck game).

I am on PC, and I did snag those DLC gear sets for free. Great thinking on both our parts! So far none of the unlocked armor matches the DLC berserker kit.
A friend just upgraded me from a 2060 Super 12GB (we thought it was a Super, turns out the 12GB model's not actually a Super) to a 4070 Ti Super, so I wanted to start playing some games I previously wouldn't be able to max out. I think I'll jump into Metro Exodus Enhanced. Try something linear before Cyberpunk 2077 or my The Witcher replays.
^ Also, a friend upgrading me just feels (of course) super nice. Kinda just lifts the weight of other unrelated problems off my shoulders. This friend had previously upgraded me from a 970 to that 2060. We hadn't even met in-person at the time, but we met shortly after.

Do you think money is easy to earn? Go back to your room quickly and start finishing all the games you've bought young man.

Sure. Not all games hit at first. Take a break and come back at another time. I used to really struggle with the Souls games and never finished any of them until recently. Now they are one of my favorite genres.

I am having issues being able to enjoy The Talos Principle 2, for some reason I really liked the first one, but this one with all the talking and the distance between each puzzle, and even some puzzles you have to walk a lot back and forth is making me value much more the compact nature of The Witness

Just drop it, it's not worth it. I still regret finishing AC Valhallah and Days Gone. Those things didn't want to end a i really tormented myself to "get my money back".

I have a co-worker who has 0% trophies on quite a couple of games. My guess is he gets overhyped easily and once he gets his hand on the game, he realises he doesn't like it and moves on. Thing is, these are brand new games we're talking about. I mean, is one thing to exercise choice, but to spend full price on a game only to drop it after an hour... I guess if you have disposable income then whatever, But, still.

Anyway, sure it's okay. Just don't make it a habit.

What time is it?
It doesn't make sense to continue to play something you aren't enjoying as your time is way more valuable than the money you invested in the initial purchase.

I will never understand people who try to play EVERYTHING!

I have been gaming since early nineties and have developed and recognized the type of games I like and dislike. I immediately know what games I would like and invest in them.

I loved the atmospheric Classic TR games, the moment they turned Uncharted like, I dropped the franchise.

I'm huge MGS fan (1-4) for their deep stories and interesting characters. Just looking at MGS5 I knew its not for me. Ended up seeing a walkthrough that confirmed my instinct about it. I hated Death Stranding btw.

I loved Bloodborne, souls games.

Returnal was a fantastic experience.

My point is, you know you man. Just invest your time in things you like.

It's the reason why you go physical, don't like the game, can't get into, it, you sell the game.
Depending on your point of view of "sale" when it comes to digital (mine starts very late, 75%+ sales) it might "hurt" more or less to just drop a game...

This is a slippery slope. I know a guy who ditched The Witcher 3 as he couldn't get in to it and now he can't play anything without getting bored. You start quitting, the next thing you know you won't be able to play even the simplest of games without complting them.

Sure. Just be sure to drop it on a tiny trampoline so that you don't have to bend over to pick it back up later.
