I don't think that's really a solo.
More like an instrumental breakdown.

One of the best solos is probably this

Solo starts further in the song, but I would recommend listening to the video above, and not skipping the earlier parts.

Sorry looks like I selected the wrong time, and I can't edit my post.
Solo actually starts at 5:20 in that video.

It's pretty good.

But, I present to you God himself. (solo starts at ~4:35, should be encoded in the link though)

EDIT: BONUS MATERIAL! Same man (John Petrucci), from an instrumental album released this year.

8:13 to 9:36

I present another contender from John Petrucci, and it's roughly a 3 minute long shred fest, increasing in speed as time goes on:

3:18 to 6:15

I love Morello, I don't think I've heard anyone emulate his crazy alien guitar solos, ever.

The only band I ever heard Morellos influence in was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, specifically with their album Show Your Bones. The first four or five tracks had some heavy Morello esque riffs (not necessarily solos).

RIP hard rock.

I love Tom's creativity. Back when I was reading Guitar magazine, he said when he was coming up everyone was try to be the next Eddie Van Halen so he decided to the other fork in the road.

My favorite guitarist for the past decade is Omar Rodriguez Lopez from Mars Volta. He's god an unorthodox composition (king of chromatic solos) and technique that reminds me of Jimmy Hendrix sometimes. Live performance that is more akin to that.

My personal favorite piece :

I suggest the whole experience, or @ 14:42 for the solo (but there's many solos in the song..)

Or this one, so hard to choose.

That's a cool song, thanks for sharing. Guitar solo's rarely do anything for me, aside from being technically impressive.

There are exceptions. I typically like simple solo's that follow the vocal melody of the song. Something like you'll find in a little pop/folk song like "Somebody that I used to know"(not the Gotye song, lol) or "First Timer" by Elliott Smith.

John Williams (The Guitarist) is as accomplished as the composer and one hell of a player.
And this piece is beautiful , evocative and not showy on how insanely hard it is to play it.

Tim Henson has probably one of the widest ranges of what he's able to play out of any guitarist I've seen live. Dude is incredible.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

but I was listening to buckethead when I clicked on this thread, so here ya go:

no. but this might be... legendary keys solo by cory henry of snarky puppy (and of cory henry lol). dude is a beast and has been pretty much his whole life. one of the few true virtuosos of modern times. solo starts at 4:18

Spoiler: It's not Ralph

Also how can this thread not have BB King yet. Fuckers.

EDIT: This is just cool AF, not quite solo due to the Halo backing but seeing the BTS with Steve Vai is cool.

The greatest solo ever
Edit: Look at that gorgeous fucking Telecaster
Look at it

Prince playin' a Tele

Hard to top that

OP:

You have good taste, but no - the GOAT is Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Absolutely beautiful.

Talent-wise, it's hard to top Between the Buried and Me or Born of Osiris:

2:18 4:21

Randy Rhodes was a fucking legend.

Imagine if him, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Cliff Burton, etc. were still alive...
