She looks good for 57. Wonder what she eats to stay looking so young? 🤔
Same as every other character in the roster; martial arts training, it is the unofficial rule of fantasy martial arts, that training would keep you young. But the moment you retire you would age normally. How old do you think Akuma is by now? And we have literal grandparents in the roster on the other side with Tekken.

I still give it to Chun-Li, she is still popular but Lara Croft kind of lost that popularity with "modern" games and kinda turn her in to different character.
Ask some random person on the streets who is Chun li and who is Lara Croft, I guarantee that most people will know Lara and have no fucking idea Who that chin what is.

Female characters more popular than Chun Li

  • Lara Croft
  • Princess Peach
  • Zelda
  • Samus Aran
  • Ellie Williams
  • Aloy
  • Tifa Lockhart
  • Jill Valentine

All of these characters can mainline games that sell better than Street Fighter or are more recognizable than chun li.

I'd bet this is the most famous/popular female character in games overall. Probably because a lot of male and female players like the character.
I remember in the 90's in the UK she was heavily advertised. Used in ads for non-gaming related products too. I'm sure Chun-Li would have been used similarly in Japan though, maybe also in China.

Not just games though. Lara Croft mainlined one of the first successful video game to movie film franchises all the way back in 2001 a year before Resident Evil would be mainlined by a film original character in Alice. Also probably one of the most cosplayed characters in history.

That being said, I'd bet Zelda or Princess Peach are actually more recognizable at least by name. I think both Zelda and Princess Peach have changed design so much over the years and while Lara has changed a lot she still has most of her trademark features.

I'd also say that in modern times Aloy and Ellie are far more successful even before getting the transmedia treatment (Aloy) or with the HBO series (Ellie). I think Lara is being left behind, no pun intended.

Even a great grand parent in Tekken 5/Tag 2.

Chun-Li is more popular than Lara. Lara Croft lose a hell of popularity those days, not to mention her re-design litelary kill her unique selling point.
Are you actually telling me that if you go out there on the streets and ask people if they know Lara Croft and a girl on a fighting game named Chun-Li, you'll get more people voting for Chun Li?

Lara Croft surpasses videogames for a long time and it's still happening. It had 3 movies, a Netflix show that was renewed for a 2nd season (even if i hated it, it's still true), it was literally named most iconic video game character of all time by BAFTA voters just last year. She also has magazine covers throughout the years etc.

She has a live-action TV show in development rght now and a videogame reboot as well.

Just because the games aren't selling 10M copies doesn't mean the character is forgotten.

The character's name is literally featured in the game's covers like she's a famous actress.

Come here to Brazil and ask a random kid or person if they know about Chun-li and then ask about Lara Croft. A few people will answer to know about Lara Croft while kids and young people will not know who she is. Everyone here knows who Chun-li despite being a fighting game exclusive character and some of them don't even play games. Voting and awards are meanless.

Can't wait for those Chun Li movies and tv shows then. I'm sure the kids in Brazil will love those.
