And by that, what I mean is the company that developed/published these games they will not be able to ever top the critical and commercial success that a particular series has had with any new ip in the future. They won’t ever be able to top the popularity and fanfare that these games have had. I’ll highlight some companies with examples to make what I’m trying convey here. You can choose a few in the same company. I’ll start with Capcom. Capcom will never be able to make anything as popular with the incredible fanfare it has with Resident Evil. Some might throw in Monster Hunter as another example but I’m not familiar with these games at all. But I know they are extremely popular.

Another example I’ll use is GTA. This seems impossible to ever top for Rockstar. I’m sure there are more examples of games that will never be topped in terms of popularity and fanfare. For Konami I think MGS is a safe bet. Square you obviously have the impossible task of a game series being bigger than FF ever was. Who else would you add here….,

Monster Hunter is already far bigger than RE. If Capcom was to shadowdrop a barebones port of MH Gen U, a game that is on par with the best PS2 games in the looks department, it will easily get a CCU of 100,000 on Steam. Wilds will easily achieve 5 million sales in the first month itself.

Are you referring to an indefinite span of time?

Than all games can be topped. Without a doubt.

You are ignorant if you think that certain games can't be topped if you have indefinite amount of time.

Everything we play now is an iteration of something before it and everything can always improve.

When FROM made the first King’s Field they essentially laid the groundwork for Demon’s Souls which was the groundwork for Souls-likes which was the groundwork for Elden Ring which is the groundwork for whatever they have coming up next.

To think games will never be topped is like saying we will never need more than 640kb on a computer.

Fair. But, on the other hand, that specific studio or license holder may have lost the talent or the will (not enough ROI) to try to iterate and improve on the kind of game we love. Do you really feel that Bioware will make a Dragon Age to surpass the first or Rocksteady a Batman to rival the Arkham games? Either (or both) may close before even attempting it.

I haven’t played either games so can’t say.

But I grew up playing games like Elite, Giana Sisters, Kickstart, Pitstop 2, The Last Ninja, Beach Head… And now these days I’m playing Starfield, Horizon Forbidden West, Forza Horizon 5, Elden Ring, COD BO6.

While I’m a huge retro fan and actually for real enjoy those now ancient games, I can see that gaming in general has improved even though much is still the same. I struggle thinking games won’t keep improving.

And I’m excited about the next Mass Effect and Fallout and The Elder Scrolls and Ninja Gaiden and Gears of War and Uncharted and Fable even with past stumbles or other people directing or even completely new dev teams. I don’t expect any big surprises but I expect cool games in genres I like. With some improvements, and I’m sure some downgrades, over previous entries as always.

Now if you ask me if I think we’ll see new original ideas I would be less optimistic… I’ve pressed a button to slash a sword and jump for over 40 years. The sword mechanics and jumping in C64’s The Last Ninja is objectively more advanced than many modern games, since you held a button and had stick directions doing sword slashes and jumps in different ways while facing the same direction.
Zelda 2 used block and crouch very well and made high and low attacks a thing that mattered.

I feel like I’ve seen the standard modern light and heavy attacks and mashing combos a couple times too many… I wish some dev tried to really advance things, maybe keep the camera out of player hands to have a second stick to do something cool with.

Yes I am. I do believe the industry has peaked in certain regards and I don’t think some games will ever be topped in terms of popularity by their respected company.

Insane. So in 250 years some games still won't be topped?

Highly doubt it.
