Jaguar gets a near completed FPGA core; which means...AvP and? Rayman I guess

haha all "Jaguar sucks" jokes aside preservation of all retro consoles in FPGA is a huge thing and an important endeavor and def should be celebrated. Plus Temptest 2000, AvP and Rayman are worth the time alone...and maybe Bubsy? If you want to have a bad day

But after years of dormancy two devs on the MiSTer FPGA side of things buttoned up a LOT of the core yesterday and now basically near to the entire retail library of games runs either 1:1 with real hardware or near to 1:1 and that's a huge bump from the previous working version which ran maybe 5-6 games in total with tons of graphical corruption and crashing

So...all three Jaguar fans on GAF should be stoked

who needs music when you have (checks notes)...ok seriously why is there no music? haha

but Atari and their cheapness just wouldn't let them have a big enough cart to hold the music apparently

I think the music may be there but the fix drops fps, explained better here: https://hackaday.com/2019/08/04/doing-what-id-couldnt-returning-music-to-jaguar-doom/

It still worked fine as is. Compared to other console versions of that era I rate it only behind Doom 64 for the atmosphere.

I always appreciate your esoteric threads, OP.

If I had infinite money, I'd buy these "true emulation" systems (or whatever the proper term is). I don't, but I like hearing about them.

Any games only available on Jaguar that never made it anywhere else and are worth playing?

Not really but someone is working on a jaguar port of mortal kombat. 🤷‍♂️

Iron soldier 1 and 2, avp, and uh, super burnout and ultra vortek are pretty ok

Club drive and Kasumi ninja are special kinds of bad that make them worth checking out

It also has the best version of double dragon 5 since it has the fewest characters

Not really...

DOOM and Rayman are the two best Jaguar games but you can play better versions elsewhere.

AvP is one of the most overrated games of all time IMO. Even technically, it's much less advanced than DOOM since it's only orthogonal rooms and corridors, like Wolfenstin 3D. But with shorter draw distance. And lower frame rate.

There's a strategy game that was a bit fun when i played it, it's called Attack of the Mutant Penguins. But it's nothing special really.

Speaking of Wolfenstein 3D, the Jaguar version is actually very nice. Probably the best version there is, visually at least, but the 3DO has a similar looking version so i'm not sure which one is better.

Tempest 2000. It was an exclusive at first but it got ported everywhere eventually. Again, not sure which version is better.

Iron Soldier. This also gets some praise. But i don't see it personally. I feel people like it just because of how low the standards are for the console.

Nowadays you can play every game using BigPEmu as it has 100% compatibility. Phoenix Emulator is also quite good but probably only 99% there.

It's not that. The music is in the carts. It just only plays during the intermissions.

The reason they don't play during gameplay had something to do with performance. Or hasty code.

There is a hack somewhere that fixes this and allows for other things as well, like individual left+right strafe buttons.

I had one growing up, as did another friend of mine. Between us we had like....5 games cause they were so expensive and we didn't have jobs yet, lmao. We just traded pretty often.

AVP
DOOM
Wolfenstein 3D
Iron Soldier
Kasumi Ninja

Such a weird system, controller too! I remember thinking the custom number pad covers for each game were so cool, lol.

People might disagree, but Analogue should consider a Jaugar Duo type device with 8bitdo remaking the 6 button controller. Maybe someone else can sell the controller inserts.
I know there isn't too many games, but still. Not many cartridge systems left for them to chase. I'd pick one up as there are a few stand out titles worth checking out.

As a kid I fondly remember the intelivision and coleco vision controllers, maybe that is why I accept the Jaguar controller as it is.

It is, but that's okay though. Not everything needs to "stand the text of time" to acknowledge it was cool back then.

I agree with your premise but i'm not sure if AVP was cool back then really. It was released almost a full year after DOOM on PCs. And while it does have some nice, high resolution assets, the whole engine is similar to Wolfenstein 3D. You roam around boxy corridors and orthogonal rooms. There is no architecture to speak of. This kind of design was already obsolete a year ago because of DOOM.

Plus, DOOM was also released on the Jaguar. Featuring a more advanced engine, lighting, etc and maps that actually have architecture and every room looks different than the other. And while it's not the fastest version, it was still smoother than AVP which despite it's simplicity and ancient design, it still has a painfully slow frame rate and even had short draw distances on top of that.

I don't know. It looked cool in game magazine pictures but when i saw it running in real time i was unimpressed to say the least.

I remember people being blown away by it person and the reviews were solid back then. I played it more as a survival horror as the Marine. The other 2 campaigns were bonuses.

Dunno, maybe DOOM spoiled video games for me in 1994.

Hopefully this can give a boost to the jaguar homebrew community, always felt the console was never fully utilized due to the 68k system holding back the system.

Yeah, Jag Doom is my favorite Doom behind Doom 64 from that era. I don’t why, it just does it for me…

What else?? You got Iron Soldier which is a decent mech game….. I think, it’s seriously been, wow 30 years. I had fun with it at the time. I kinda wish I had an operational Jaguar just to check some of these games out again lol..

This would have been really exciting to me a couple years ago. Jaguar emulation was always pretty limited. But BigPEmu totally changed the game, 100% compatibility with all carts and CDs. It's been great to finally revisit the Jag library, dodgy though it was, without all the bugs and issues and compatibility problems.

To be fair, there is another emulator that's almost as good, called Phoenix.

It's less popular because it's Russian only, though it does have a translation patch. It was also originally made to emulate the 3DO but ended up being a multisystem emulator.

It's Jaguar emulation core is almost as good as BigPEmu, claiming a 95% compatibility. There's also a port of this emulator for Android. I was using this before BigPEmu and works great. But it doesn't emulate the CD addon.

BigPEmu is still better though, with 100% compatibility and Jaguar CD support.
