Jason Schreier says 3rd party console exclusives will become obsolete soon

This is a dumb tweet.

  • Sony is already releasing on PC. They aren’t going to release SP exclusives on Xbox or Switch.
  • Xbox is releasing everywhere, so no shit.
  • Nintendo isn’t releasing games outside their own consoles. Although if they try for a bigger MP game I could see a potential Steam release.
So what exactly is Jason taking about here? 🤨

100% correct. This is shit we've known for some time. Jason is slow these days.

Sony already released a 1st party SP game on Switch a couple months ago.

It will happen again.

Only if they partner with Lego again, more than likely. I don't see Sony publishing games like Intergalactic on Switch 2.

Jason schreier let's his personal views and political views get in the way of what's reality. Nothing he's saying here is based in reality especially on the nintendo and sony side of things.

Everybody keeps saying this because the current narrative is Xbox games going to PS5. It's not like MS is doing this because they want to, they're doing it because they have to because they fucked their entire hardware ecosystem with shitty decisions. I think you'll see Sony and Nintendo doing their current thing for a while yet.

It all just smacks of #sonytoo by bitter Xbots

I don't see big AAA tent pole releases coming to Switch 2 either, however I can see something like Astrobot coming to Switch 2. Like the smaller titles. Maybe, big maybe for Marvel's Wolverine.

I guess this is technically correct, but Lego is kind of a Switch thing due to kids targeted sales.

Rise of Ronin was Sony financed though I think. So probably will stay console exclusive, but will be interesting to see if it doesn’t.

As far as SE, they already said they are done with exclusives and in general I agree we won’t see many 3rd party ones unless console owner helps to pay for development.
This also kinda already happened with Death Stranding on Xbox. Though there is a lot of other shenanigans going on there with KojiPro getting the IP back from Sony or something like that, but Death Stranding was funded by Sony.

Listen, I am not saying it will happen today, I am just saying that cracks are forming... 10 years ago no one would've believed that Sony is releasing games on competitor platforms, but look were we are.

You guys say " not Sony! ". But they already have put lots of games on pc and a switch game. lol 🤷‍♂️

I'm sure Sony will try to put their own launcher on pc first. It's exactly something Sony would do.

Those games are still Console Exclusives.

And Sony released a LEGO game and MLB game on Switch.

With Sony removing the PSN requirement for PC games, that PC launcher has gone out of the window.

Hard to imagine a game like Astro Bot that celebrates PlayStation and particularly PlayStation 5 being played on Switch 2. Perhaps a game like Helldivers 2.

No, third-party exclusives are not going away, they are heavy on the narrative that exclusives don't matter since Xbox went the way of Sega, years ago they didn't say anything about this.

Good. Games have become far too expensive to be released on one platform. You can console war all you fucking want, but that's just how it is. In order for companies to take more risks when it comes to games, they need them on more platforms.

I've a feeling that the same will be said for first party games in the not too distant future too. The risk of releasing them on just one platform is way too high for companies to take in most cases.

No they fucking haven't Jason. One console is on its way out but Sony are setting records with PS5 and Switch surpassed PS2 as the highest selling console of all time in the US. Probably on track to outsell PS2 globally over its lifetime, too.

Based on the WSJ article, it's in fact PC spending which is in decline:

No growth to be seen. And PS5 won't even come close to the PS2.

Whats he even talking about? Like explain it properly because clearly Nintendo isn't gonna port games to PlayStation and vice versa. The furthest sony will go is day one PC. That wouldn't be too surprising to anyone. Nintendo will stay exactly how they are.
Must be some "muh patriotism" or some shit that can't make them being honest about the situation regarding the Xbox brand

The other article as well about the console war ending without any real winner is like WTF the gaming journos are talking about!?, it's damage control one after the other, Xbox as a brand is done and what's worse is that Sony didn't have much to do with it, the results are a consequence of all the decisions made by "good guy" Uncle Phil and no one from the rabid fanboys to the "professional jouranlists" wanting to acknowledge it

Feels another astrosurfing on that issue...

1. Mostly 3rd party exclusives are handle well on console space such as Sony pays for it(they do the ads, give technology support and other things can help for game development or such) it's just those who makes the games are just nagging so much their sales not sell well or just bad predict sales for the game they sell (too much hype on their targeted sales prediction) see "square-enix" ranting their game sells bad
2. Steam has issues on sales on single party games due it's affected on seasonal trend it's like game pass but it's seasonal(waiting for best price cuts to buy games) mostly Mp games don't follow this trend such as next monster hunter wild will do for example for this)

"No growth to be seen."

PS5 still half year life cycle.

"PS5 won't even come close to the PS2."

nothing will come close to ps2, the only console with the slight chance is switch.

Its weird that people keep comparing the ps5 userbase with the previous gens.
I guess we should segregate PC market user base by different gen of GPU and CPU as well.

One of the green rats
Where's the logic in this when they have just made the PSN sign in for all their games on PC optional?
same thing MS is doing .. building their presence ... doesn't mean they wont have their own launcher. Why do you think they wanted it mandatory in the first place?

To make it easier for PC gamers to buy PlayStation. That is what Sony said was the reason for porting games to PC in the first place. Perhaps foolhardy, but none of this sounds like they are moving towards their own launcher.

We can revisit the numbers in 2028-2029. I'm pretty sure the total will still be the same or lower than the last gens.
There has been no growth in the HD console market for multiple generations, that is just a fact.

1) Steam has become a bright spot for many game-makers as console sales have flattened.
2) Console exclusives will become obsolete soon, especially for third-party publishers.

Both points are bewilderingly ignorant because:
  1. PC is irrelevant. Console exclusives already launch on PC. That's why we started calling them "console" exclusives. Sony and MS are putting almost all of their FP exclusives on PC. WTF is he smoking?
  2. No, they won't. Sony and Nintendo have hardware to sell. And given Xbox's inability to sell hardware, 3rd parties will eventually stop supporting the platform; making defacto console exclusives.

Their actions are the opposite of what you stated though.

If they were insistent on buiding their presence then they wouldn't make it optional for people to need to sign in to PSN to play their games on PC. They would make it mandatory across all their titles in the same way that Microsoft, Ubisoft and EA do (incidentally, all the companies that do have their own launchers).

You're talking waffle.

thats like saying PC gaming is dying because less people are upgrading their PC.

If first party exclusives cease to exist- so will their brand. See Xbox.
Just because XBOX is failing and needs to out of a necessity - doesn't mean it applies to the industry.

Sony doesn't have much incentive today to pay for console exclusivity but there are a lot of parameters where that could change, so this seems short sighted to say.

If/when Sony puts out their handheld/hybrid, I could see them paying for exclusivity for games like Monster Hunter.
If/when Steam puts out their own console, I could see Sony paying for exclusivity for a multitude of games not to hit PC/console hybrid.

The definition of what is a console is largely changing and that blurring will change who is in competition with each other, and the result will be more exclusive titles again.

I get the feeling after his 2025 "predictions' he wants to usher in a new age of "good" PC gaming news.

As far as I can tell only GAAS from Sony had done worth a shit on PC and everything else has tanked.

Sony should pull their single player games off PC and keep them exclusive.

"Brightspot" and "flattened" are bullshit spin trying to create the narrative that PC is taking over, to make his prediction come true.

Truth is, the reason he wants consoles gone is he sees our power and he thinks decentralizing the platform from which we play will reduce our power. He is right that it would, but he is wrong that it will. That's just his wish, not reality. Publishers, devalue consoles at your financial peril. Look at the percentage of PC players that play new games on day 1 at full price on PC then look at that on console. Hell, raise the PC gamepass price to match the console and watch your gamepass dream go up in smoke as you realize the only way PC players will stay is if it is almost free. Look at the actual revenue you are making on PC and then make the right decision for your bottom line, not some guy's social justice campaign.

PC will save gaming
When PC GPUs are costing 1-2k by themselves, PC gonna need to save itself at some point. I'm at literally the first point in my life since the mid 90s where I don't have a gaming desktop. I can't think of a single game in the modern era where I'm willing to pay the $500-1000 over a console for the advantages that PC offers.

Once Xbox is gone a bunch of third party games become de facto console exclusive to ps5. Switch 2 will continue missing out by being in lower power band.
