I noticed that GAF’s last Jazz OT was dead and buried, so I thought I’d make a new updated one. The kind of Jazz I’m talking about is straight Jazz - improvisation, saxophones, the works. This OT exists in order to provide fellow Gaffers with recommendations for more Jazz. This list will grow as more people recommend their favorite albums and tracks.

A good homage to Blue Note records. Madlib adds his own flare to well known jazz tunes from Donald Byrd to Herbie Hancock.

A fictional jazz group made up by Madlib. Well worth the listen for those that are into quintet type of jazz sounds of the 50s.

Tis a shame these threads rarely have any activity. I bought love supreme last August and didn't really care for it at first but then feel Lin love with it after continued listens.

I've also started listening to Miles Ahead and I'm really feeling it. My Ship and Miles Ahead are so good. Since I've had spotify I've been try to branch away from Miles Davis and John Coltrane, with monk and art blakely.

Today British singer Andreya Triana releases her latest album Giants. Giants is Andreya's second album. This album's sound is still blues and folk oriented, but the sound differs in choice of instruments. There are more piano chords,hand claps, and background adlibs in this one. All of the instrumentals are pretty decent with some standouts like "Clutterbug". Andreya Triana compliments the production phenomenally. Her voice is as beautiful as ever. Her tone, pitch, and flow are one hundred percent on point in every track. The writing on almost all of the songs are pretty substantial, the only ones I found average were "Heart in My Hands" and "Changing Shapes of Love". The album shifts throughout tone in the album, from tranquil and uplifting most commonly and Andreya perfectly captures these two tones in her voice. Giants is not only a stellar entry in Andreya Triana's discography, but also in the genre.

Been on a huge Jazz kick lately and looking for some artists to get into besides the usual suspects (Coltrane, Davis, Monk, etc).

I didn't realize that Christian Scott was on Akua Naru's Black(&Blues) People.

The web of music seems small in some cases. That album has some really great features. It beats The Journey Aflame in that regard.

If you haven't listened to The Miner's Canary I highly recommend it. Jazz, rap, and soul all up in there.

Melody Gardot is amazing. If you enjoy old school Jazz/Lounge type of songs...you'll love this album along with her other work. However, her recent album is hit and miss.

Having a terrible time figuring out the origin of a sax melody stuck in my head.

I'm pretty sure it's 60s/70s era jazz. Somewhere between Garbarek and Rollins?

I am an extremely casual jazz fan but I recommend the group David Murray, Geri Allen, & Terri Lyne Carrington "Power Trio".

Saw them live (it was great) and their album is called Perfection.

Being a huge music and jazz fan I'm kinda embarrassed I haven't come across her before, especially since I'm very familiar with Simon Philip's work. What a phenomenon! Her piano skills are almost inhuman, but at the same time she has an incredible sense of musicality and it's not all flash. I absolutely love discovering musicians who warp my sense of reality!

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah the new album is great. I agree, Hiromi's trio is the most exciting thing in jazz right now. I hope they do a full US tour soon. The intense interplay between Hiromi's piano and Simon's drums while Jackson lays down the solid groove is just a delight to listen to. They explain their chemistry really well here:

It saddens me to think that the newest record on this list is over sixty years old, but this is what I came up with putting no special effort into ensuring diversity. That's not to say no one's doing anything good; I'm a particularly big fan of Partikel, who put out an incredible album last year, and Dave Holland, whose album Hands has been on continuous rotation for me more or less since it came out.

Surely you Japanese jazz folks have heard the good word about Chihiro Yamanaka, yes?

This thread is so dead. Let's talk about Japanese Jazz. Do you have any recommendations? I was in an awesome record store tonight in Tokyo, just browsing, and I was pretty overwhelmed looking at the Japanese Jazz.

Are you still in Tokyo? Do you like free jazz? If so, head to Aketa no Mise near Nishi-Okubo. The atmosphere is like nowhere else I've ever been in the world and the acts are always incredible.

The last time I was there I saw a trio of guys that were just wild. After their set I had a little chat with them; it really strained my knowledge of Japanese but it was a great experience.

Be forewarned if you do go that the band may have more people in it than the audience.
