This was a nice surprise, even if we were all kind of expecting an album drop by the end of the year.
I've given it a few plays to digest it a bit, and it definitely feels like the polar opposite of Mr. Morale. Where that album was long, introspective, personal, and quiet, this one is loud, brash, bouncy, and concise, shit that makes you want to roll the windows down and blast the bass.
Where Mr. Morale is Kendrick saying he can't save hip hop, he can only save himself, this album is like "Nah, we gotta clean house, if we want hip hop to make it."
He's kind of learned from Not Like Us to keep it simpler, like he isn't as technical, or going as fast, but the flows are creative and memorable. This album is waaaay less concepty, no skits, no story. I hate to say dumbed down but a little dumbed down, but maybe not in a bad way? Some tracks like Reincarted, Gloria, and The Heart Pt. 6 still show off that incredible storytelling ability, though.
All in all its a good album. It's not a next level album, but it's also not a retread, it definitely feels like a new chapter that reflects where Kendrick is now, and that's probably the thing that matters. You don't want to go stale doing the same thing, even if that thing is great.
I liked most of it except for one song, reincarnated. Good message, lyrics, and idea, sonically terrible.
This is my favorite song on the album, start with a classic Tupac beat and flow and then get cinematic with it.
