Late to the ruined party: WTF happened to Majora's Mask (GC conversion)?

I've had the Zelda collector's disc since the holidays, but I've only just now gotten around to playing through Majora's Mask on it (I owned the N64 original, but never completed it). I'm still having as much fun with it as I did on the N64...except for that in many places, it seems like I'm playing a god damned slideshow. Walking through Clock Town is absolutely painful, and the Goron Races look like they're sailing along at about 10 FPS. When I consider the relatively faithful ports of the other games on the disc, the sorry state of Majora's Mask is even more dissappointing.

I love Nintendo to death, and Majora's Mask is a damned fine game, but really, couldn't they have put a little effort into the conversion? They warn you about the sound glitches as the game is booting, but really, that's the least of it.

Was anyone else as bothered by this as I am? I don't recall hearing too much about it on the GAF when the collector's disc first surfaced, but maybe I missed something.

yeah it does seem to play a bit slower than the n64 version. the only reason i can think of is that nintendo's n64 emulator wasn't altered to account to the ram upgrade, due to lack of time/concern.

The problem is that the game needed a real port. It's being emulated on the GC, and its third generation status is betrayed by the GC struggling to run it in man places. I would be pissed if this was a package I bought, but I doubt we could get better for a free set.

Yeah, since it was "free" I guess I shouldn't complain too much, but it's very dissappointing, all the same.

I've also had the game crash on me once, which is a rarity on my GameCube, especially considering it's a launch model (I've had Metroid Prime crash once and Rogue Squadron II crash once, but that's all).

I have the launch model as well (japanese) andonly ONCE has a game crashed on me, and it was Metroid Prime. Those early GCs are rock solid :)

Yeah I loved Majora's Mask on N64 and was eager to play it again on GameCube.

I managed to get through the first 3 day cycle (where you can't save the game) and then I went to the Deku City as normal Link and the bloody game crashed! Argh. I couldn't be bothered doing that first 3 days again. By far the worst part of an otherwise great game. Might get around to starting it again soon.

I have mainly played the 8-bit games on the collection, I have only played a little of Majora's Mask and it did seem a little slow, but I noticed that Ocarina of Time was slow on the N64 and I never noticed until after I played the GC version.

I would love a proper Zelda collection, especailly a redone Zelda 1 and 2.

Yeah, MM GC is obviously inferior to the original N64 version. Even in the very beginning you notice that the original 'woods' backdrop in the forest scene has been replaced by common fog in the GC version.

I know a lot of people dislike these guys, but they only did the emulator. OOT, for example, runs fine on the system. MM is not their fault--it's a third generation N64 game. There are some N64 games that still have yet to be emulated properly because the developers were doing some wacky stuff to push the hardware.

Well, at least the GC version gives people who have mothballed their N64s a chance to try the game out. Not a one of my friends ever played the game beyond the Deku Scrub village; all got frustrated playing an in-store demo and gave up looking for the first level.

I'm just glad I still have my N64, and the gold carted Majora's Mask, because the emulated version isn't great.

Wow, I didn't notice that. Interesting.

Yeah, that's an unfortunate facet of the game -- you have to put in a lot initially without really getting too much in return. Once you're past the first cycle it's gold. I hope some of your friends will get to that point.

It's pretty good for a free game.
It sucks to have the game crash on you in the middle of a dungeon,
but it doesn't happen often enough to ruin the game.
It only happened to me once.

I got my neice to play throught most of the games, but few of my friends ever get through games before finding new games to interest them and my neice no longer play video games.
