Layoffs Hit Popcap Games [Up: No Layoffs at Garden Warfare/Peggle 2 studio]

I mean honestly, what's left for EA? Bioware, Mythic, Respawn...is that it? EA's mass grave just keeps getting bigger.

I'm not even sure I'd consider Bioware as being "alive", per se.

The original founders are gone, most of the original staff is gone. Like Maxis, Bioware is really just a studio "in name only". Bioware will be EA's studio for when they want to slap a well known developer name on a RPG.

Was going to come in and be all faux shocked that a company laid off employees, then I read the article.

Regardless of what actually happened, I hope everyone affected finds a job soon.

Any company that sells to EA deserves what they get.

Go kindly walk off a short pier.

Or are you honestly saying that people deserve to lose their jobs?

EA threw a great game like Garden Warfare to the fucking wolves while they were too busy hyping up Titanfall.

PvZ2 was a bad misstep in game design that clearly did not take off.

And Peggle 2 suffered immensely from its exclusivity contract and being released incomplete just to make december.

Just awful decisions all around.
In the case of PvZ2, I'd rather say it's failure was due to the free to play (pay to win) model than its game design. I'm 99% sure it's business model was brought on by EA, if any of EA's other mobile efforts are any indication.

In short, EA is the cause of PopCap's latest bombs. My condolences to any of the people who are now jobless due to EA's agenda.

Maybe I'm selfish but I hope to see more stuff like Garden Warfare come out of the studio. I hope the company and those affected by the lay offs find new opportunities.

EA needs to close their fucking doors. They have single handedly destroyed more companies than I care to remember. WestWood Studios, Bioware, Maxis, PopCap.

Don't forget DICE.

Battlelog/Battlefield 4 buggy mess/Origin only

And going by the rumors, Mirror's Edge 2 will be fucked as well. My hate for EA grows bigger each day.

There is no chance of Dice getting rid of EA is there? I really like Battlefield but haven't played any since Bad Company 2 and 3 beta..

DICE is a wholly owned subsidiary of EA and DICE's CEO also runs the entire Studios label (all their core and sports games).

Easier to close the studio and remake it under a new name, like respawn did. Would lose battlefield, but I'm sure they could come up with something else.

Came looking for this, didn't leave disappointed. It doesn't look like they're closing up on Popcap, but still, sad day.

EAC studio is still there and does FIFA, there is Madden and NHL as well of course, Ghost Games does Need for Speed, Visceral is still there, and of course Firemonkeys.

Any company that sells to EA deserves what they get. EA is a cancer on this industry.

Except the employees, of course. No doubt PopCap will be making Battlefield DLC in a few months time.

edit: jeez, I had no idea how big PopCap were. >400 employees apparently.

So it's 'just' the mobile studio? I guess Plants vs Zombies 2 didn't hit as hard as they'd hoped. I guess it didn't help they burnt all the goodwill Plants vs Zombies made with the micro-transactions.

Yes, because it's the employees, not the ownership/management, that makes decisions like that.

Geez - I strongly doubt anyone is blaming the employees here as the various company's owners are to blame. In other words if a company's owners sell themselves to EA then it should at this point come as no surprise to anyone that the company will probably get eaten up and shat out by EA. I mean - who didn't see this coming?

Not sure of this has been mentioned yet or not, but they got to Bejeweled as well. A recent update introduced a Poker mode for $2.99 (but the first 3 plays are free!), where as previous updates would add new game modes for free. Guess they gotta make up that PvZ2 budget somehow...

If they would've made PvZ2 not run like shit on most devices, it may have done a bit better. I only played the first 3 or 4 missions because when more than 4 zombies are on the screen at once, it drops under 20fps on my Galaxy S4. So I'm left waiting for a console/PC port.

With no sales data given, one can only make an educated guess:
- No mention of sales anywhere
- three months in and no mention of promised leaderboards or bug fixes
- released only on Xbox One

- There's no mentions of sales for any digital games, not sure why this one would be any different
- They just updated the game like last week with the local mode
- timed exclusive, got money to make it so, releasing on 360 in May.

So, ya. That coupled with the fact that their division wasn't even the one effected just makes this even sillier.

When are people going to realize this is how the entire games industry operates? everyone who signs on the dotted line knows this is how it is.

Wish I could say I'm surprised, but apparently the internal culture at PopCap has gone downhill since EA acquisition because management opted to pursue payout targets at the expense of the studio they had previously. Hopefully they can reenergize themselves on mobile, and create more original IP.

Wait, it runs that poorly? I have an older midrange android phone and was thinking of trying it out but I guess not lol.

Someone fucked up when they paid $700m for Popcap, that money would've paid for a lot of salaries.

Yeah, kinda knew the newer team wasn't affected. PC and PS4 versions are still on the way, and probably a bunch of DLC.

Other Popcap studios, however, making nothing relevant.
