The First Surface Gaming Laptop

Over at theprimegaming.com, a leaked chart showcases all the specs we should expect from the ‘Surface Gaming Laptop’.

Display:

The screen features a 16-inch Pixelsense Flow display, showing that touch screen is yet again included along with a refresh rate that can go as high as 165Hz. The screen resolution is rated at 2560×1440 (1440p) coupled with Dolby Vision support.

CPU & GPU:

The ‘Surface Gaming Laptop’ is not just a single device, rather it is a lineup. Shipping with i5 and i7 Alder Lake CPUs, expect top-of-the-line performance. The i5 variants are treated with NVIDIA’s RTX 3050 Ti GPU (4GB G6), whereas the higher-end i7 doubles down on the gaming experience being paired with the RTX 3070 Ti (8GB).

Software

Microsoft is offering the Windows 11 Home OS with the Surface Gaming Laptop. Being aimed at gamers, a 1 month trial for the Xbox Ultimate Game Pass will be provided to users for free. Looking to game while still working? Fear not, for Microsoft gives another free trial for its Microsoft 365 software package (1 month).

Chargers & Battery

The out of the box experience grants you with the Surface Gaming Laptop (As Expected) and a 102W charger for the i5 variants or a 127W charger if you opt for the i7 counterpart.

The laptop offers a 16 hour battery life for the i5 decreasing down to 15 hours for the i7 variant. Do remember, ‘typical device usage’ does not equate to high-end gaming, so expect your battery to tank massively if you do happen to game on this device.

Storage

Arriving in multiple choices, the storage department ranges from 256GB2TB of SSD (removable) storage. The pricing will vary depending upon your liking.

It's a leak so no price, however Microsoft will be having a Surface event on the 22nd of September so it's likely this may be announced officially there with price.
There is also a weaker I5 3050Ti configuration.

Considering the build Quality of Surface products this will be a real treat, finally a Surface Book with some backbone for gaming.

1440p display instead of 4K I'm a bit mixed on but 1440p is still a great display especially if the surface tech is behind it. 165hz, 32GB of RAM, and a 3070TI is pretty good.

What's more is it comes with a 1 month trial of Xbox Game Pass, and a 30 day 365 trial if you care about that. The Xbox app is already pre-installed. Hopefully they don't add anything else but that to avoid bloating the hardware and OS. The 3070Ti had 8GB of GDDR6 memory. 16 hours of battery life is more than I was expecting.

The one issue I have is that Surface books and even the Surface Laptops, while well run and great in built-quality, are costly, and while rumors are suggesting that this gaming Surface Book will be competitive in price, I have a feeling it may be costly in the end.

The lower end i5 3050Ti model would have to cost less than $900 to stand a chance, and nothing more than $1200 for the i7 3070TI 32GB build, otherwise this is dead in the water like a $1,225 Sony gaming phone.

Could be a cool product, but anyone who's tried a gaming laptop knows the spec sheet doesn't tell the whole story.

No one like Panos Panay to be "brave" enough to launch a premium laptop with Intel Gen 12 Alder Lake and nVidia RTX 30 Ampere, at the same time as when Intel releases gen 13 Raptor Lake and nVidia the new RTX40 Hopper.

Surface's always are like a year behind in terms of CPU's; I don't care for it too much; always makes looking at a Surface device a bit weird.

Personally I need to just get a GPU for my Razer Core enclosure + SP8

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
It’s gonna be $$$$

Just bought a z13 flow (asus surface like with 3050ti) and it was $1800 (on sale for $1500).

Surface line only thing out there that rivals a Mack book, I’d say 2500 at least for a i7, 3070ti 32gb ram 2TB ssd maybe mrie

How will this compare to the ROG Flow?

That device has intrigued me but seems like your paying quite the premium for the form factor

Reverse groomer.
man, using a high end intel CPU for a laptop is one of the dumbest things you can do.... that things gonna last 30 minutes on battery tops

Who knows, maybe Microsoft will expand their payment plan on Xbox to Surface too, so you don't have to get a second job or finance your house.
They did have a payment plan first with klarna and then with Dell but it seems to have been scaled back. You can still use Klarna to split up the payments but it's not the same as Xbox All Access afaik.

I have a z13 flow and have owned surfaces in the past. Z13 is up there with the surface in build quality. Mine only has a 1900x1200 screen so that’s a bit of a let down compared to the surfaces (can see pixels some times). Form factor is killer and with the external 3070 gpu dock thing I can play all games maxed in it . The 3050ti can do most mordern stuff at medium if want the high fps.

That would be ideal, and I am surprised they have yet to adopt it in this ever-inflating world that's being engineered.

Still think they should be working on an Xbox Series M (mobile) or P (portable) based on the series S specs. The handheld PCs like the deck seem to be a great place to increase your gamepass base.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
I wonder why they dont use XSS + XSX silicon in these?

I guess the xsx soc would be to much power requirement.

But the XSS would be possible.

I'm still thinking there will be a Series VR. Something similar to the Quest.

Hot damn this shit will cost and arm and a leg im expecting like 1500-2k. Surface for microsoft is like a high end item for them. The current surface laptops already cost an arm and a leg, build quality is fantastic though.

Gaming laptops are stupid expensive. Why not double down with a Surface gaming laptop.

I'm guessing closer to $1900 ha

Pretty insane kit if true but I don't really see how this is possible...the Surface is like a tablet with a keyboard case. What can the real-world performance really be like on this thing?? I'm not an expert on thermals or anything but come on....

Don't think I'd get another Surface. I had a couple of Surface Pro 3 i7s. I loved the form factor but pretty much melted them both doing nothing more than database development work stuff and a bit of YouTube. They both went the same way, over heating which permanently messed up the gpu causing the screen to look like a disco light epilepsy machine. Bust 2 in about a year. I'd have been gutted if I'd I paid for them out of my own pocket.

Had the SP3 i5 and that also got shockingly warm and I wasn't doing anything too heavy. My Sp8 is much better but yeah, it still feels like it's a bit too warm.

Weirdly prefer the pro over the laptop, that was my last one. I am just hoping for a good arm version at some point.

Is it going to be xbox branded?

I guess there might be a small niche market for an xbox branded gaming rigs...
