CGMagazine - Matt Keith - 7.5 / 10
Return to Moria, from Free Range Games, is a fun experience for fans of survival titles and Lord of the Rings. It takes some of the better systems from the genre and marries them to the lore and setting of Moria, the result of which is a world that fans can be excited about.

Everyeye.it - Giovanni Panzano - Italian - 6.5 / 10
The Lord of the Rings Return to Moria unfortunately can't keep up with the sacred monsters of the survival genre.

GameGrin - Tina Vatore - 6.5 / 10
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a decently fun time. While not perfect, it's a unique take on a sandbox survival game.

IGN - Travis Northup - 4 / 10
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria doesn’t give a ton of reasons to play it over its genre peers – and its poor combat, building, and mining mechanics make those other options sound even more appealing.

Niche Gamer - Augusto A. - 9.5 / 10
Overall, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is an extremely solid survival crafting title, and stands proudly as one of the best Lord of the Rings games, as well as one of the best releases of 2023.

PC Gamer - Tom Sykes - 58 / 100
Don't be a fool of a Took and rush into Moria. An authentic and authentically grueling game.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Looks like Xbox dodging a bullet here.

First Gollum and now this. Whys it so hard for them to say “hey, we want an open world Middle-Earth RPG, so let’s find a studio who can make one!” Is it just that they only want to budget about $5 to the development of LOTR games?

Anyone playing this after the Steam release? I was thinking about it - looked at some gameplay and it looks incredible, a bit junky but that’s it. I have an impression a lot of reviewers just applied the usual „AAA” benchmark to no matter what game and called it a day.

I'm also wondering what's up with the cross play they promised - is it implemented yet?

Between this game, Gollum and The Rings of Power, Tolkien must be spinning so much in his grave, he could become a renewable source of energy.

You forgot Tales From the Shire in your list of terrible uses for an amazing ip.

Remember when the LotR games were Two Towers, Return of the King, Shadow of Mordor?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.

I will say that I haven’t played this game, the survival/crafting genre is anathema to me, but the decent user scores show there may be a decent game here for fans of the genre.
