Lttp: Resident evil 4 remake

I was initially disappointed in the game. Having to start the game by tweaking aiming settings, because default really sucked. It took time but final result was alright. Leon felt clumsy and imprecise at the start compared to og, but I think I got used to it and it didn't really bother me in the end.

I liked lot of the story changes, like luis, but felt like saddler got too little screen time.

Some of the checkpoints were too far between on death, making you repeat big chunks. But for me difficulty was well tuned, so I didn't die often.

Regenators were still scary, but I found it funny you could solve puzzle while enemy was standing right next to you.

I still don't like to weapon system. Most of the game is spent on pistol, due to magical ammo drops. I wish you could just buy ammo or something else.

Knife parries i kind of forgot most of the time. They weren't necessary for mobs and durability made bit hesitant.

Salazar boss fight was kind of mis designed. You were better off shooting all the time not just the weak point and using gun instead of knife.

Overall, i really liked it.

6 hours into this game. Played the GameCube and Wii version and oh my God. It gives me the exact same feelings as when I played the original and that game was already God tier. They changed and added a lot of stuff but they didn't take anything away.

An absolute masterclass in game design with absolute perfect pacing, difficulty balancing and mission design. You just want to keep going and that is the biggest compliment you can give a game.

I am playing only 3 hours a day because I really don't want this to end. This shit is special and it reminds me of why I became a gamer in the first place.

I genuinely think the remake is one of the best action games of all time. I don't think a game has had me by the balls like this since OG RE4. There was some stuff that was a downgrade (in terms of characterization/dialogue for literally every character other than Ashley; yes that includes Luis, though he's more arguable than the others) but gameplay was an all around upgrade (other than Salazar who was IMO worse as a boss).

The villains got hit harder than the heroes in the characterization department. They felt more disconnected with Leon, whereas the originals had more confrontation/back and forth banter. They used to feel like they actually had a relationship with Leon vs being one note obstacles. Leon himself was more dark/brooding and kind of a dick (especially to Luis, who he used to feel more friendly towards), which made him less likable. Ada is self-explanatory.

You slacked on knife parries OP. Legit game changer, and I used it all the time.

Seperate Ways absolutely shits on OG SW. It's not even a contest.

Overall, I hope future REs follow this framework (though maybe a bit more horror based). I hope the rumors of RE9 being another third person Leon game are legit.
 
Legitimately not only the best Remake ever made but also one of the best games ever made.

Looking back the only thing I like more about the OG is the goofy story and dialogue, however I can understand why they changed the tons so much.

OG RE4 used to be (and still is one of) my favourite game of all time and the fact that the Remake still blew me away I consider to be a bloody miracle.

Going forward I just hope that Capcom finally manages to make a new entry as good again. I mean, they clearly still got the talent.
 
I enjoyed the revamped level design and pacing but Salazar's boss battle was made very erratic and random to my disappointment. The quick draw knife with parry was nice, but durability added an extra layer of annoyance. Even so, the final duel with Krauser did not have the high octane action of the original as he was less likely to engage head on. The automated executions on blinded or capitulating enemies were not quite as versatile as the original for crowd control though the downed knife executions were a great addition. Biggest improvement was the quality of the Mercenaries mode. Sort of sad those loadouts and abilities were not available in the main game.

They royally screwed up with some characterization on the other hand. Luis went from being a newfound friend with a sense of humor to an obnoxious "Sancho" sidekick. Ada went from a seductive femme fatale with a soft spot for the hero to a mocking and commanding acquaintance (with a voice like nails on chalkboard). Sadler went from a Saturday morning cartoon villain to a scheming shadow figure. Salazar went from hilariously incompetent boss figure to a know-it-all tiny prick. The expanded characterization of Village Chief Mendez, the Merchant, and Krauser (even if ex-partner was replaced with ex-teacher) was interesting on the other hand.

P.S. I still prefer the original overall. Largely due to all the amusing exploits it has and my fondness for the original characters. I like Resident Evil 3 Remake better as well due to dodges and counter punches being better mechanics than parries. Crouching or parrying to avoid something hitting the player just does not have the same oomph or tactical advantages.

I have wanted to give this a try, but the existence of the PSVR2 version(and inferior Quest version) make me feel a bit left out. Understood the former is due to a deal with Sony, but having beaten this game on GameCube and Wii - buying it a 3rd time I'd really like those native VR features included for PCVR. Durability wasn't an addition I was aware of, sounds a little annoying.
