Clickbait title lol. But for real, I thought this was neat.

lol at "internet was so early" in 2004. It was the year of web 2.0, baby!

I didn't get a memory card until like 2 months into owning a PS1. And only had a couple of hours of gaming time a day. I know the first disk of MGS by heart.

Memory cards inhabit a weird place for me, it was a pain in the ass running out of space, so many saves I wish I still had I had to delete, it was nice after a point when consoles had so much memory you never, ever had to worry about saves (which tbf I think also applied to the original Xbox, don't remember ever having to worry about save space there)

These days I never can remember which save is on what since most of them all but one are black.

However, the LOOK of them is nostalgic, the little 3D models for saves were cool, it's something that was both a pain in the ass and also peak nostalgia.

The biggest pain in the ass was when some games didn't even let you make a backup of your save on a different memory card (F-Zero GX for instance).

This was an issue if you had a third party card with more memory. You could save more games in them but the risk of getting a corrupted save was higher.

So i was using a third party card as my default save storage and a smaller official one to backup the most important saves i didn't want to lose.

A completed F-Zero GX save was pretty important given how hard that game is but it didn't let you copy it, for whatever goddamn reason. So all this effort was stuck inside a dodgy third party card, i'm not sure if it's still there today tbh.

Couldn't you have just booted up the save, swapped cards, and saved to the new one?

I would never think of that back in the day and even if i did, i would be worried the memory card will definitely get corrupted if i unplug it while the console is on.

Maybe i will try it if i ever use my Gamecube again, i keep all my old consoles for display only and use emulators now. I just downloaded all the completed saves i had in my memory cards and backing up any files on the PC is not an issue.

Did anyone get the sales pitch when buying your expensive PS2 memory card “8MB is so massive for saves you’ll only ever need one!”

8 months later you’re back to buy another.
