Marathon to get its own show in April, according to Jeff Grubb...

It appears Jeff Grubb has heard some things and that we're not too far away from a proper Marathon reveal...

Probably an April show, May Beta, launches in July.

Bungie is always shorter on the beta side of things to their launch window.

The fact that Sony made no mention of them in their earnings report is an interesting one though. We'll see if that changes once Marathon launches. Bungie definitely have a lot riding on it being successful.

We're going to see whether the first major AAA live service extraction shooter can be successful.

I totally get people asking for a single player campaign, I'm right there too, but I can see what Bungie is trying to do here and if they're essentially first to market at this size and scope Marathon could be extremely successful. While a single player campaign would be great and I think bring in a lot of players who aren't interested in online games especially live service online games, they're aiming for something a lot bigger here.

So many "reputable sources" have been wrong, there's no point in expecting this until we have something more concrete, lol.

Nobody cares about this game which is crazy considering it's the next game from the company that for better or worse runs one of the most popular games on PC and console.

I wonder when it flops if it is going to finally trigger Sony to make major changes to PlayStation.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Would be funny if the whole show cater to marathon and then the game sold as much as Concord lol

I'm not sure it is fair to say that nobody cares about this game. The game has barely been announced/revealed.

We have one cinematic trailer from 2 years ago and really not much else and that was less than 2 minutes long.

The game will get a ramp up of content drops once they're ready to reveal it and more importantly, have the public play it.

Betting on it to flop is pretty funny given the history of Bungie.

Like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt Showdown bombed?
They have relative success though. Success for a Bungie title will be expected to be much higher, just like Ubisoft expectations are different to Remedy games.

What is your ballpark of success for something like this in terms of budget, MAU, update frequency and monthly/yearly revenue it generates.

For clarity I don't really have a strong leaning but I do think success is definitely an uncertainty right now.

Those games have something marathon doesn’t: leadership that actually cared about the product. Bungie’s leadership has been an absolute cancer for years.

If the game has a great showing an looks fun, the average gamer is not gonna go "but Bungies leadership".

Another weird failure waiting to happen unfortunately. Nobody asked for shit shit. Destiny 2 already has PvP. Instead, why not have them make a Halo type game for Playstation? Dumb move after dumb move chasing survival-loving PC dollars with generic lobby games, most of which nobody will ever play, and none of which anybody will pay anything for. When is Fairgame$ releasing?

It's always interesting when people compare games by MAU when they have different revenue streams.

Rumors suggest this won't be a F2P game.

One mistake a lot of people make in comparing the "size" of Helldivers 2 to say Apex Legends is that they fundamentally misunderstand that Helldivers 2 doesn't need as many concurrent users. It has premium users who are buying to play the game.

How many users do you need to have play a F2P game to generate 40 dollars? Many users won't pay that much over the course of the entire game's life... And then you still have people buying warbonds in Helldivers 2.

There are pros and cons to both models and there are hybrid models.

So you trying to judge how successful Marathon can be based on MAUs without even knowing what model it'll be kind of exposes an inherent bias and misunderstanding of live service games.

Success is an uncertainty because we literally don't know much about the game.

Where are you getting nobody care about this game? Its had one teaser trailer with over 20 million views. The Sony hive mind on GAF hate this game and thats about it.

See what happens with the full reveal before writing this game off imo.

I think people have assumed that the game is live service so it is likely to flop.

Somehow there is supposed to be all this hype for a game that hasn't been shown. Imagine it wasn't announced yet but was getting announced for the first time in April. Marvel Rivals wasn't even announced in 2024 until March...

People were convinced Marvel Rivals was going to bomb. Why? Because it is a live service game.

There is an anti-live service bias on neogaf and the site is pretty much the worst to gauge whether a live service game will find an audience or not.

Obviously. If the game is good and fun then even people who know bungie is on fire will play it?

But evidence strongly suggests it's going to be a shitshow.

This. I want it to be good. Fuck. I’ll probably play it either way. But look at the amount of people their leadership has fired just so they could buy more cars and shit. D2 is basically on fire because they fired every single person that actually could catch broken and busted things before new content ships.

Good question, but almost impossible to gage at this point.

Sea of Thieves is Rare's most successful title to date. I believe the team that made it was around 200 people. That game was averaging around 15k CCU on Steam for much of it's life and hovered around #30 - #40 on Xbox Live's Most Played. That was a Pay 2 Play title like Marathon will be, but it had a relatively poor MTX model. Bungie will likely be much more effective / aggressive there.

Obviously there's a ton more that goes into budget than team size (California vs UK) but that puts my vague ballpark at (settle in at a top 20 position on XBL) and average north of 30k CCU on Steam.

A big part of my uncertainty with Marathon comes from ARC Raiders, which I think will be it's primary competition. I'm willing to bet one of these two games does exceedingly well, but I'm not sure both will. I'm day one on both titles but I don't expect an even split when it comes to my time/money.

ARC Riders was rough as last time I played, lot to do to get that title into shape, it was boring.

Did you play in the Nov 2024 beta? Nexon said they had improved engagement metrics over the 2023 beta. I'm just generally so impressed with The Finals that I assume ARC Raiders will have similar levels of polish / execution.

I did. It didn't grab me at all. It felt pretty good to play and looked the part but was lacking a decent loop, the PvE was boring as shit. Obviously can be fixed if the bones are there.

I combed through a ton of that leaked gameplay footage and tried to parse through the more intelligent comments from the ARC Raiders subreddit, and did come away thinking it looked pretty vanilla. Like high quality vanilla ice cream... with no hot fudge, no whip cream, and no sprinkles. I'm hoping 2025 is them adding the extras to improve that loop.
