People weren't confused by Nes --> super nes, by PSOne --> PS2 --> PS3 or by Xbox --> Xbox 360
I believe it was mostly a lack of interest by the gaming public, on a global scale.
Just like the lack of interest from japanese gamers towards the PS4
It's anecdotal, but I saw way more confusion surrounding the Wii U than any other new console, and the marketing (emphasis locked in on gamepad with the console itself getting little/no visibility) probably played some role in that.
That and the price launched at least $50 too high.
