Props to Youkai Watch 2 as usual. Hyrule Warriors at least seems like it should hit 100K fairly easily (on Famitsu) next week.

I'd say TLoU Remastered debuted fairly well all things considered. Its first week was better than Killzone and only 10K worse than Infamous's first week.

Can anyone in japan testify if they've seen Mercedes promote this dlc at all?

Curious if barter was part of the deal or if It was strictly cash.

I'd generally like to think this deal was done with co promotion in mind which in theory would add visibility and help awareness/sales but I'm not in the market so I've only seen what Nintendo has gone online to promote it. I haven't seen anything in the US, but this is a japenese-led deal and in-game is done globally so that wouldn't mean much.

Maybe, even outside of Japan, since KH:DDD sold well in US, despite mediocre numbers in the home country.

Yeah no, unless Nintendo's next handled has similar power to the PS4 or architecture, which is never going to happen.

Furthermore didn't BBS on PSP outsell its DS counterparts....actually wow they outsold them by a massive amount:

I've seen several adds online through Yahoo Japan promoting the GLA with Mario featured; however, the DLC was not mentioned as maybe it was too early in the campaign (no DLC until now).

I think the initial deal was meant strictly for Japan as co-promotion in mind, later to be expanded via a cash incentive for the European and North American markets.

Gaming industry is becoming more and more western in their vibe and feeling. Japanese gamers, in their majority, aren't keen to this vibe and, right now, the current trent in the market is to be more and more western-like. Even major japanese developers are now following this model.

PS4 doing poorly there isn't because the home console market is dying. Actually, is a rejection for the current home console strategy, both from Nintendo and Sony. Wii U has a lackluster support from both Nintendo and third-parties, Sony is dedicating their efforts mostly (if not totally) to the western front, so the japanese market is left as secondary. This is a response for the situation.

PSV also has a poor support, as there isn't many BIG franchises there to appeal to the japanese core audience. PSV would be head-on against 3DS if they didn't lost Monster Hunter for Nintendo. That decision pretty much destroyed any chances for a PSV take off and now is struggling to find anything able to repeat the MH phenomenom, which was the reason why PSP made that miraculous turn around.

3DS is the only one able to sell decently around there, mostly because there's a solid support, strong IPs for that market and it's prospects. WiiU, PS4 and PSV has low prospects in comparison. I think blaming the mobile market as a "gaming killer" in Japan is very overrated. The line-up for all systems, besides 3DS, is the reason. They won't buy it if there isn't strong IPs, major projects with the Japanese market in mind (like PS2 games were) for it or not appealing to the Japanese audience like most PS4 games are.

The declining size and significance of the Japanese home console market is part of why publishers that had traditionally put a degree of effort into appealing to the domestic market no longer do though.

This isn't something that just started.

I find that folks seem to give Monster Hunter all the credit for the PSP when there was some other really significant Japanese support for the PSP. Sure MH may have helped the PSP hit its near 20m, but there was also a ton of support from Square Enix among other companies (Dissidia, Crisis Core, FF Type-0 & Kingdom Hearts = exclusive PSP games, Tactics Lion was a good port/remake, ). You also had MGS: Peace Walker, Portable Ops, 5 Tales games (Eternia, Radiant Mythology 1, 2 & 3, Tales of Vs.) clearing 200K sales (there were 5 more games too). You had the original Little Battlers eXperience hitting over 500K in sales by 2011. I think the PSP had a decent variety of games. It got great JRPG support, had games not possible on other portables (MGS), MH took off (and God Eater followed soon after) so that even LBX could do well on the portable (keeping in mind the install base was pretty big at this point).

Sony managed to make a new portable (Vita) with basically no headliners and thought it'd sell somehow? If anything it shows that Sony's properties don't sell handhelds by themselves (thanks to the Vita), and even if they did, Sony barely tried.

Everything dropped in all honesty. It's the week after Obon (holidays) and it had two western games as its releases (one of which was a port/remaster, and another where the PS3 version was much cheaper).

Also, the Vita turn around in Japan this year has been pretty remarkable considering where we were at last year!

By this time last year the Vita had already started to do fine. The console is up about 25% YoY it seems like.

my perspective on matters:

last gen the floodgates opened for pc developers on consoles. this is really what led to the western revolution in gaming on the xbox 360 and to a lesser extent the ps3. keep in mind that call of duty was originally a pc franchise that saw console spinoffs on the ps2, xbox, and gamecube. xbox had already been around a couple of years for the idea of these kinds of games to actually do well on consoles, as seen with games like halo, morrowind, and knights of the old republic. when the 360 released, some japanese third-parties were on board from the start, notably capcom. most of them were backing the ps3 if they were really backing anything at all.

when the ps3 was doing its best gamecube impression, i feel that budgets were higher than anyone really expected, but it was an easier transition for traditional western pc developers to make games on the 360 and the publisher make a quick buck with a sometimes shoddy port for the ps3 as well. it wasn't only the japanese developers who found hard times making games for these new architectures, but the traditional western console developers as well. thq and midway among many others met their end this way. other traditional companies like electronic arts and activision either purchased or merged with traditional pc companies. for japanese companies, the answer was also outsourcing to western studios and outright purchasing them.

the conservative element found that supporting what would be a 50m unit userbase in japan wasn't that bad of an idea when development costs would stay the same. this allowed japanese games to flourish on the psp and ds. the wii, for all it did to keep costs down, and despite its userbase advantage over the next nearest competitor, was never able to pull in the ps2 fanbase that seemed stuck on the psp and ps3. the result was a split between low-risk japanese-centric ventures for handhelds or high-risk/high-reward ventures for consoles, with a western lean to boot.

the current state of the industry has been long in effect. japan's split between console and handheld continues, but now there's also a split between mobile gaming and dedicated handhelds. and it seems that where in last gen the ps3 was the high risk unit, the same is true of dedicated handhelds as a concept. dedicated consoles essentially don't matter anymore because effort to appeal to a japanese audience and developers really went out with the ps2.

and that's on top of the general effect of the world as a whole not needing dedicated gaming devices anymore, but that is another story for another time.

PSP was struggling and lagging behind NDS for the first years. There wasn't a big hit for it until Monster Hunter Freedom/Portable 1 and 2 came out in 2006 and 2007, which were PSP's first million sellers. Most of the titles you mentioned, especially the top selling ones, came out after the MH craze. So yes, in a sum, MH was pivotal for PSP's take off.

Still, KH main on a Nintendo handheld in addition to PS4 could be a good choice: there is an overlap between Nintendo and Disney audiences, and KH customers include Disney fans, not just SE fans, and it could help in Japan. Maybe, even outside of Japan, since KH:DDD sold well in US, despite mediocre numbers in the home country.

The reason I find Kingdom Hearts a bit more interesting is that it was set up back when Disney acted a bit more like LucasArts used to in terms of keeping a notably more active hand in game partnerships.

For new deals, they appear willing to act as a traditional IP licensor for anyone who isn't their internal studios.

Like if you wanted to go license their IP and kept to their IP standards, you could presumably even release a game for Raspberry Pi.

Similarly Namco has also been licensing Marvel titles from them, including one they put on 3DS, but I don't think that mirrors the priorities of Disney's internal studios or published titles.

There are a couple of Nintendo titles, but as you can see, they're not forcing some large strategy toward that by any means. They even are publishing something exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox 360.

It's worth noting that pretty much every person on the executive level of Disney who were responsible for making the Kingdom Hearts deal happen are no longer at Disney. The company's business engagement with regards to games has also changed very drastically in recent years. Considering how Kingdom Hearts 3 is supposed to be the conclusion of the ongoing storyline, I think it is very likely that the long term future of the franchise could be in doubt. It would obviously depend on how well KH3 sells, and also the specifics of S-E's contract with Disney, but it would not surprise me at all if the deal falls through eventually and the franchise just fizzles away.

That is certainly possible.

They might also just find it worthwhile to do what they did with Star Wars and EA and switch it from a partnership to a standard royalty based licensing deal if Square Enix wants to keep going with it, but Disney doesn't really want to put much effort in on their side.

That also appears to be how they're handling Marvel for non-mobile platforms (or even for mobile platforms with some titles) outside of Disney Infinity.

This of course predicates Square Enix actually wanting to make more Kingdom Hearts, which if it doesn't do well, it's very plausible they wouldn't want to invest in a lower margin title that takes up the time of a notable amount of talented staff.

Calling it now; Taiko Wii U 2 to be announced next week in Famitsu and will be at TGS. There's seemingly a big blowout of BN games in the next issue, what better time?

Barr any possibility Nintendo will have a surprise Fall Conference, and while I'm sick of making fruitless predictions each year, they haven't skipped more than a year in a row, having only skipped 2009 and 2013. Shin'en said they'll show Fast Racing Neo screens next month, but they could just do that themselves ala the unveiling of the game.

Man I miss Nintendo's Fall Conferences, they always 1-uped their E3 conferences (see MH3 in 2007, 3DS in 2010, and Wii U in 2012 with Bayo 2).

The PSP was struggling? It was doing fine, although not amazing. The DS was a behemoth and also outsold the PSP every year in Japan until 2011 (I admit it was close some years likely thanks to MH), when the 3DS released early that year, basically killing DS sales, and the Vita released in the holidays (while mostly failing to kill PSP sales initially). Even after Monster Hunter, which first released in 2005 mind you, things didn't immediately pick up.

Keep in mind Crisis Core was announced in 2004 before the PSP launched and there were also Metal Gear games (Acid I think?) close to launch. Just saying...

I'm not saying Monster Hunter wasn't a great boon to the PSP and didn't boost sales quite a bit. The way I keep reading a lot of posts though is that the PSP w/o Monster Hunter would have sold like the Vita (I assume you don't mean this), and that's simply not true. I still think the PSP would have sold 10-12 million w/o MH though and it's an exaggeration saying that w/o MH the PSP would have been a "failure" in Japan or something, which is what I see many folks say. By that definition, the PS3 sold miserably every year of its existence because it was behind the "struggling PSP". If for example, Sony had somehow managed a lineup similar to the PSP w/o Monster Hunter (some exclusive FF game planned, MGS support, etc.), it might have at least been able to get some momentum in Japan. Instead, it'll likely fail to outsell the PSP's lowest sales year before the Vita released (close to 2m).

Historically I haven't, but if people would like me to start logging notable DLC I can.

I might format that separately somehow since it's not exactly a new game per say, like as part of a publisher overview.
