Exactly what happened with the Wii/PS3, third parties have no choice, the west is too big a market to ignore.I can see a scenario where PS4 is very successfulIn that publishers realize if this one fails too then there is only 3DS left which obviously can't support everything we make. So we 'must' make it successful by green lighting lots of titles as early as possible otherwise gotta layoff most of our consumer products segment, lol. Maybe we see signs of them trying in these weeks but so far there is nothing of that sort

That's what happens when your console's software strategy is based on first party output more than anything else. The company has enough problems trying to support 2 consoles in the modern development climate (to the point of affecting the other one). Now imagine 3.Didn't know the SNES was supported until 2000. With the Wii having such a huge install base though, I wonder why Nintendo hasn't continued supporting it with new games.
wait, what
I apparently haven't been paying as much attention as I thought
what are they doing to my FF?! D:

Finaland & FFDream: A Final Fantasy XV question, what should we expect in terms of vehicles ? Can we pilot airships and explore the world of Final Fantasy XV and discover its secrets ?
Tetsuya Nomura: We don’t have any big plans for having different type of vehicles and stuff like that. There’s one you saw in the recent trailer of course.
Well two things you probably could use, first, the car, the car is gonna be the vehicle you’ll use probably the most in the game. The other one, the magitek armor, you can actually control and ride the magitek armor as well, in a future reveal you’ll probably find more.
Yeah even if you include 3DS development, i dunno wth they were doin for 1-2 years, they literally just sat on their asses for so long with nothing coming out. I expected a huge launch line up for Wii U and the best they could muster was Nintendo Land and yet another Mario platformer. Come on...That's what happens when your console's software strategy is based on first party output more than anything else. The company has enough problems trying to support 2 consoles in the modern development climate (to the point of affecting the other one). Now imagine 3.
That's also way you saw every post SNES homce console from then dieying a very quite and early death. Now 3rd partied to pick of the slack.
Extra rant: Nintendo should've supported the Wii for longer while there were cooking up the successor longer. A very attractive redesign, a discount software line up and some colaborative proyects would have helped the system for an extra year or pushing it 2 more.
If it was on PS3, maybe.I don't know man. XV could overtake XIII
There are 2 factors that will play heavily into how well the PS4 does:
- No red hot Wii this time around
- PS4 will cost far less than the PS3 initially did
Those are pretty major factors, it will also be the only truly viable tech pushing console in Japan as the Xbox One is a non factor. Its not really competing with smartphones, 3DS or anything of the like.
Then you have ponder just how the masses in Japan will respond to the console, Sony is heavily into making this device social, making it play with smartphones, focusing on interaction and some services. What kind of effect are indies going to have here? Japanese indies? Is this going to be come a thing?
The twist might be that the PS4 lands it self in a blue ocean type strategy that Nintendo enjoyed so much with the Wii, where it is the only gaming device that is relevant in Japan that pushes technology and delivers big games, while everyone else is fighting over the smartphone/handheld market.
All this focus on individual games got Wii U nowhere, it has NSMB, Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest out now and its flaundering. The PS2 launched with Kessen, Street Fighter EX and Ridge Racer 5 and still did gangbuster from day 1, original Wii biggest game was basically a tech demo for the Wii in Wii Sports and that did great business. The notorious thread "Any reason why the Wii U *wont* dominate Japan" was purely based on a few select games and people deriding that ofcourse the console was going to do great, it has X, Y and Z = success. Its not that simple, as its clearly evident by now.
Yeah games sell systems but that is obviously not the only factor that makes people purchase them, it took the PS2 several months to get its big title in GT3, remember all the shoddy Dreamcast ports in Code Veronica and DoA? Yet the console was doing massive numbers, as was the original Wii.
There more to it than just games, will be interesting to see what the reaction is to the system as a whole.
The PS4 so far has a better support than Wii U.I'm still a little bit baffled in how the Japanese developers for the most part completely ignored the Wii U, even before the sales went down the cliff. Apart from MH and DQ at launch (both ports) we didn't have anything significant for the Wii U from the Japanese.
If the same happens to the PS4, will it have a better fortune than the Wii U? Doesn't seem likely. Tomorrow (today depending where you are) we might get a few answers from Sony, but if we have to wait until FFXV for Japanese support on the PS4 I fear it will do similar numbers as Wii U and Vita are doing now.
After this gen where we saw a bunch of developers closing doors as a result of the spike in the production costs the devs remaining are probably more cautious and not willing to blindly invest in a new console.
Or maybe when PS4 launches it will do PS2 numbers again and everyone will be happy. Hard to predict this one... :~
Crossgen games. Wii U would be doing alot better if it shared more games. PS4 won't hit PS2 levels, the industry has too many platforms now for any console to perform like the PS2.I'm still a little bit baffled in how the Japanese developers for the most part completely ignored the Wii U, even before the sales went down the cliff. I think anything that's going to the West in a big way will obviously be on PS4 (and presumably Xbox One), though if Japanese developers decide they want another platform that isn't mobile is an interesting question.
But more games for the Wii would have meant less development resources for the 3DS when it was doing poorly, and a slower ramp up for internal HD development for the Wii U. It don't think that would have left Nintendo in any better shape now, or in a position to challenge the PS4 and Xbox One.Extra rant: Nintendo should've supported the Wii for longer while there were cooking up the successor longer. FF XV, MGS 5, KH 3 and Deep Down are all heading to PS4. Guilty Gear developer and Level 5 are also rumored to be working exclusively on PS4.
I think it's in best interests of a few companies at least that PS4 is about as viable as PS3 has been. The ones that make games which mainly sell in Japan and a mobile or 3DS can't support. Like Namco with Tales of and some of their licensed properties, Koei with Musou games and the similar, the console entries still sell good numbers, they've put games in those brands on mobile/3DS but they're not as successful. They probably want to have a new viable place for those in future. If Vita or a more powerful portable in future is successful maybe there won't be that need as none of these games are technically demanding but still above something 3DS/mobile can support and PS3 is not going to be viable for very long.
Deep Down is playable at TGS so i am sure it will launch soon enough.Ok, but WHEN are these games launching? That is the main problem. If the PS4 launches this December in Japan and FFXV and the rest are releasing only in Fall 2014, how will PS4 sell?
Looking forward to tomorrow for the launch details in Japan.
The only really big franchises Sony has up their sleeves in Japan ATM are:
MGS(with V being crossgen)
FF
Tales(next entry is more than likely going to be PS3)
KH
Off the top of my head HSG would probably be their best selling first party game but that series have declined hard.
FF and to KH could be system sellers but for all we know they won't release until 2014. Also, given how Japan is pretty much handheld and mobile land now I don't think we'll see a vocal outcry for more PS4 titles unless something crazy happens.
As for the Wii thing that's problaby when they wanted all their devs to start working on 3DS games or something.
So a 3rd Dusk game? Can't wait. Gotta get the 2nd game over here doe.namco trademarked Kamen Rider Musou a while back (see japanese trademark thread) seems like a likely candidate and a relatively big game
GUST actually said they want to do another game in the Dusk series so expect that on ps3
I'm still baffled how some expect PS4 to do better than PS3.
Maybe the conference tonight will change that, but it just seems so unlikely to me.
Its mainly because this 'next generation' is a fairly straight shot with no confusion as to what the prevailing platform is going to be. Xbone just won't be viable for Japan only releases and MS doesnt appear to be whispering sweet nothings (or they shouldnt have an effect to forward thinking studio producers, sigh Platinum), and the WiiU is speaking for itself right now.
Don't you mean it could be end up being 2015 (FF15) and 2016 (KH3)?
2014 seems hopeful.
PS2 launched 4th march 2000, its first big game was Gran Turismo 3, which launched April 28, 2001, pretty much a year after the system came out.
Ridge Racer 5 was the best selling PS2 game i believe in that year, Kessen and Tekken Tag did ok, best selling game in 2000 was Dragon Quest VII and FF9 for the PSX
Unless i am missing some big PS2 game before GT3 came out for the PS2
Obviously i do not believe FF15 or Kingdom Hearts will come out in 2014, but who knows with Square and how long FF15/Versus has been in development. And while GT6 probably will see a PS4 port, it will be just that, a port.
We will see what they have very soon

The other side of the coin is that console gaming may have shrunk even further and a Japanese audience will feel too completely content with PS3 since theyre also very content with PSP/PS2 level seemingly forever.
I reworded that sentence a few times so it comes off weird, but I'm not expecting either one of them in 2014.
PS2 already had a lot of hype for the other things it had and from what I've read it was a DQVII machine lol.
Yes, my main question is if there's enough output.
Like if Namco decides to go all in, it probably won't be a huge problem since they put out 5000 games a year, but just getting a couple of games from 4 publishers isn't going to cut it.
What they did didn't increased their chances against the competition either and it was patently obvious even before they launched Wii U. Also in most markets the Wii (with zero support) was still outselling the Wii U anyways and at profit levels (remember that acording to them they lose money on each Wii U).But more games for the Wii would have meant less development resources for the 3DS when it was doing poorly, and a slower ramp up for internal HD development for the Wii U. It don't think that would have left Nintendo in any better shape now, or in a position to challenge the PS4 and Xbox One.
I can see the next Gundam Vs being a PS3/PSV/PS4 game. No way it's PS4 only.
Presumably people would buy a PlayStation 4 when big name software like FFXV comes out.
If Sony was smart, they would do a XV PS4 bundle
If anything this shows how weak Sony has done cultivating and maintaining their Japanese studios and IPs.I'm sure they will, but I'm not sure a Fall 2015 bundle will help them in the short term.
Yep, Nintendo Direct is most likely aimed primarily toward the Nintendo fans indeed. Maybe that is what Nintendo intend the Nintendo Directs to do.I think the problem here is that we know who exactly who watches this shows and that´s probably 90 die hard Nintendo fans. They don´t reach gamers in general with NDs let alone a more casual oriented audience.
But then you're promoting to people who are already aware. Isn't the point to attract new people?Yep, Nintendo Direct is most likely aimed primarily toward the Nintendo fans indeed. Maybe that is what Nintendo intend the Nintendo Directs to do.

I can't remember the last SCEJ developed game I bought outside of shadows of the collassus. PS2 version.
I don't know man. XV could overtake XIII
Indeed, that is kinda my point, the console sold gangbusters without any major games for a whole year. People just wanted to have it, for whatever reason, some to play DVDs, some to play PSX games on, etc. Consoles do not just sell because of games, some buy it for the potential, impressive tech, to be on the hype train, etc etc.
But then you're promoting to people who are already aware. Isn't the point to attract new people?
3 words: VR Waifu VN.So yes of course it might be in publishers best interest to push the PS4 as strong as possible - but what are the genres or games which could revitalize the audience compared to PS3 ?
But then you're promoting to people who are already aware. Isn't the point to attract new people?
Slightly off topic: when do people think the annual Nintendo Fall Conference will fall?

Aware that the game exists, yes, aware of how good/deep it is, maybe not. See TW101's and the reception for the demo they announced in it. Without it, sales would probably be even worse, so it's better than nothing...
My guess would be October since they have been moving it later in recent years.
Last two were on September 13th.
