FF is not that strong anymore, as seen by this weeks sales. I wouldn't count that to sell units long term in Japan.

KH3 is what....being released on PS4 right after PS5 launches? We have multiple years before we worry about that title.

MGSV I honestly don't know if it will sell or not in Japan, with the more "open world" designs being implemented. Dark horse for me.

FF is still strong. Spinoffs and sequels obviously will sell far less than mainline FF's and FFXIII isn't exactly the highlight of the franchise so it's not the best example.

We've already seen gameplay videos of KH3 a lot sooner than Versus and FFXIII and I expect development to be easier this gen.

There are also other games that did well on the PS3 like Tales whichI didn't mention.

With third party Support I expect the PS4 to do well in Japan like the PS3

Vita isn't exactly on fire sales-wise but Sony is at least doing well with introducing original IPs for the thing (Gravity Daze, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Tearaway etc.), they seem to be doing the same for PS4 as well.

Simple research proves this argument to be completely wrong. Both in terms of how well established IPs sell (see mario kart 3ds, Animal Crossing 3ds, 3d Land, etc) and the number of new IPs released across the 3ds and Wii U.

Hardware is only as worthy as its best piece of software in my eyes. With Wii U it's Super Mario 3D World. With PS4 it's Resogun.

I don't see how the comparison with SMG puts anything in perspective. The Wii was, what, 10M sold by then? Of coutse it wasn't going to cause a huge HW bump.

But when Wii U sales have been super low and we've heard for ages that it's because "the big guns" aren't out yet, and there's been so many posts (and articles) arguing that now thanks to SM3D, it's super worth it to have a WiiU... these results are quite pathetic.

Mario/Wii U: "Well, Mario and casual games didn't work at launch, so let's try more casual games and a less popular style of Mario." What's the next major Wii U game? 2D Platformer Donkey Kong? I'm sure tripling down on the same strategy will work.

Vita TV: "Let's make a product that turns our handheld into a console and only launch it in the region where consoles are dying. Also let's act bizarre surprised when people are confused that it's not launching in the regions where handhelds are struggling instead." 3D World is universally critically acclaimed, and when it can't move consoles there the problem must be (as I see it):

1) Most people don't like Wii U as a piece of HW, it's not appealing.
2) Japan don't particularly like to buy home gaming consoles anymore.

Surely the people who did that earlier this year have learnt their lessons after the record breaking PS4 and largest ever Xbox releases.

The Wii U is undesirable and it will not recover anywhere. PS4 does not face the same issue in Japan. PS3 will reach 10m and with 12m Wii sales for the generation there are console buyers out there. Even a reduction in the home console market by a third will leave 14m potential sales, a 40% increase on PS3.

It is now up to Sony to convince third parties that they should move over to PS4 development to capitalise on a growing western installed base with much less competition for sales and with a larger proportion of hardcore buyers who will beore interested in Japanese titles.

They also need to seriously restructure their first party development. Puppeteer should have been a PS4 launch title for Japan to be released in Feb. It was wasted on PS3.

Plus, like everywhere else, people usually have to choose where their "entertainment time" goes and in Japan at the moment it is mobile. I just don't see the PS4 changing that social dynamic quickly. Will it sell good at first ? Yes. Will it pull people's "entertainment time" away from mobile/handhelds in Japan? I doubt it.

And Japanese game developers know this.

Mario Kart would be a catch 22: if things are bad to the point where everything depends on Mario Kart, then that's too large a burden for Mario Kart to carry alone. The other thing about the 3DS and the WiiU relationship is that from a hardware perspective they are both selling fairly similar ideas in terms of dual screen and touch screen gaming. The WiiU is offering the option of portability with the streaming, naturally that's the territory of the 3DS. Of course to those of us who follow the console closely we know that there are differences in terms of what each can offer, but it seems like from the hardware/control side of things there is a huge crossover in terms of what they're selling.

So not only do you have a handheld that is offering the kind of experiences that only a Nintendo console used to be able to provide from a software perspective (3d Mario, 3d Zelda, Smash Bros) it's also offering a very similar experience in terms of the hardware properties that are supposed to be the selling point for the WiiU.

They do not look like up ports of handheld games nor the fact that some of them look like HD remakes of Wii games. What worries me is that SM3DW's apparent failure in Japan greatly diminishes the incentive for Nintendo to put resources into developing big-budget titles for Wii U. Nobody wants to spent time and money on games that are destined to sell so very little. It's illogical to continue developing next-generation Zelda or Metroid for release on the Wii U. Maybe they should bring out a budget-priced Wii U, similar to what the 2DS is to the 3DS. Something that has no gamepad, better branding and a much, much lower price. If they:


-Further streamline their 1st party software development process to improve output rate, quality and decrease development costs.
-Improve their network infrastructure.
-Invest more on online gaming, dynamic and/or persistent game-worlds.
-Price their games more flexibly on a per game basis. Not all games are worth the same price.

...then it might go somewhere. But right now people are already far too detached from the traditional home-console/retail sales model and there's no way to make that work again.

Finally, I think maybe the most important thing is that Nintendo further works on their e-shop to define it as their main Steam-like hub and central node between all their current and future platforms, services and games. If Nintendo is to survive in this fast changing world then they need to become very computer-network oriented. They are a gaming-software company of the highest-possible caliber but that might not be enough anymore.
