Man i'm into retro gaming these days since i bought Megaman Anniversary Collection and i did also remove the dust on my Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on the SNES.
Damn! Today's game are for pussy skills!! These 2 NES famous series put me to shame as soon as i let go my concentration for say 0,000000000001 second or something. Beating it would be very rewarding i guess. I'm on it.
But damn we are becoming pussies...

I was over at my brother's place yesterday. He (25) had bought a load of NES games off eBay. Most of which he had originally bought when they came out. Megaman 2, Ninja Gaiden, Bionic Commando, SMB3, Jackal, Double Dragon, Bad News Baseball, etc.... I very nearly blew my load.

Well, I'd say the Ninja Gaiden series is more cheap than anything. They're too frustrating to be fun for me. Mega Man is challenging, but fair. I know those games so well that they're not even that challenging anymore, though.

Maybe its just because I remember the games so well, but I just plowed through Mega Man 3 & 5 with little difficulty. Dr. Wily in MM1 is giving me some trouble though.

Ninja Gaiden, and many other NES games are much harder IMO.

The mega man games besides mega man 1 (and the dragon boss in mega man 2) are a cakewalk. Once you know the patterns and the weapons to use against an enemy, nothing is challenging.

Ninja Gaiden, on the other hand, is just cheap. They love to throw vultures and bats right when you have to make jumps. I've never beaten them.

Also in that category is the original Castlevania. REALLY hard.

Well, i never played the old Megaman much. I wasn't really interested in them when i was younger.

But it's slowly coming: Cutman, FireMan, Gutsman and Bombman are down! Almost done with Elecman. (Megaman 1)

While many of the old school game were indeed more difficult, most of the time, it was because of simply being cheap, instead of a skill based difficulty, that made the game easier the better you got. Anytime that passing a particular section of a game, comes down to luck (like the AI luckily deciding not doing a particular action), the designers have made a mistake.

NG's constantly reappearing enemies is a perfect example of this (not that I didn't love the game when I was a kid)

What the hell? I've died on the dragon boss about one time, ever, and I've played through that game dozens of times. Just stand there and quick-boomerang his face. He dies almost instantly.

I'd say a lot of the bosses from 3-6, not to mention 7, 8, Rockman + Forte, etc, are much harder than that.

Ninja Gaiden isn't that hard to beat once you know the patterns.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is a cakewalk.

Ninja Gaiden 3 though is a pain in the ass!

Megaman requires a lot skill, but I always found the aspect of matching the right weapon with the right boss unnecessarily difficult, and involving luck moreso than actual skill. What am I missing?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I've beaten both of those games on one life, Castlevania twice through in one life. I sucked at Ninja Gaiden last time I tried to play it, though.

I didn't know he was weak to quick boomerang :(

I always thought ninja gaiden 3 was the easiest of the bunch. they give you so many powerups.

I'm playing megaman 1 with my roomate right now. We have to kill guts man, unfortunatly we are having immense difficulty with the retarded level you have to go through before you can kill him...

Well it's just that those old games aren't forgiving at all. The proof is that they can be played successfully with one life like many here say. And enemies do reappear in Megaman too so they are both "cheap" if i stick with you logic.

What's more, i saw some random behavior in some ennemies in Megaman but not in the Ninja Gaiden. Everything that is random, luck based can make a game cheap. And what is skill??? Isn't it to be good enough to go trought all this learning all the patern memorizing the ennemies and everything? --- of course! What else?
There's no true skills with videogames except memory, reflexes and concentration. It's no skill to press buttons and move joysticks.
