Cryptocurrency miners are turning to creative solutions to sell their remaining inventory of GPUs as the business of crypto mining becomes less profitable.
According to reports, miners are using thermal paint to hide the wear and tear on their GPU components, such as the die or GDDR memory, which can overheat and produce visual signs of damage, such as discoloration or melting.
Iskandar Souza and TecLab have uncovered these practices, and are warning third-party buyers to be cautious before making a purchase. Some miners are even going as far as resoldering failed GPU dies back in place and attempting to make the chips look like new. The use of thermal paint and resoldering is a deceptive practice and miners are being warned to be careful as this could lead to legal repercussions.

Youtubers Iskandar Souza and Paulo Gomes recently unveiled an investigation into third-party GPU vendors and resellers painting over certain areas of graphics cards to make them appear newer. The two accuse crypto miners of finding increasingly inventive ways to resell overused graphics cards for profit.
Paint was discovered on GPUs sold by crypto miners, which had enticed the new owners to buy outdated graphics cards. Also, Paulo explains how to find out if a graphics card is new. A few warning signs he mentions in the video are screws that appear to be tampered with and missing labels or stickers. Apart from that, when looking at the appearance of the graphics card, users should be able to notice a slight yellow tint on the memory chips and GPU.
Be very careful, if you are buying a new GPU, as miners are adopting scummier tactics to fool gamers.
Remember that mining GPUs can often have faulty ram chips, especially with GDDR6X. And remember cases like the repair shop in Germany that received a few dozen GPUs with damaged chips.
