Monster Hunter Wilds' popularity due to emphasis on story, says series producer

“Monster Hunter Wilds has seen huge success since it launched at the end of February, which series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has put down to the emphasis on story.”

Lol, fucking clueless. People hate the story.

Bro, your story sucks fucking ass

And it's always presented in the most dull and irritating way

Forced walking sections have been a major criticism in modern gaming, yet somehow, they doubled down on it

Absolutely mind boggling

Wait, they've done forced walking in a monster hunter game?

I am sure the story is much better in Wilds than in World and Rise, not like id know since ive skipped every single line of dialogue in all 3.

They should check their telemetry data and look for how many players press alt and tab during all the story content.

As mentioned in the OT, Wilds actually has a pretty high story completion rate for players, it's currently sitting at 54% of all players on steam have managed to finish it, in comparison MHW sits at 45%.
I'm sure they have even more data, like do players go through the story in one go or do they do other random stuff in between etc, but at the very least a higher percentage of players have gone through the story compared to MHW

it's a fraction of the length. 12 hours in Wilds vs 40 in World.

edit: this is actually one of the bigger criticisms, both in the review thread and OT here. super short campaign. but maybe it's a blessing because the story is utter shit?

It doesn't matter what it's compared to, story completion rates are universally low on any game, regardless of genre or time required to beat, even FMV games that are literally only about the story and only a few hours long people don't finish.
sure, but I think it would make more sense to compare it to other games where the game opens up post-story, like Diablo 2.

Would be curious to see story completion rate for something like D2R.

although I don't doubt this game will be much higher. despite every criticism, and there are A LOT, this game gets like a million players online playing it, sells a ton through micro transactions, etc. there is definitely a market for it.

I think its popularity is because Worlds was huge, was a lot of peoples first taste of the MH series, and people have been anticipating it for a long time. It's a game about fighting huge monsters, no cares about the rest.

There is nothing wrong with a little story in MH, but the way they did it in Rise is absolutely the worst way to implement it.

It’s so bad, it throws off the entire rythmn and loop of monster hunter

I actually put that one down because I didn't want to do another one of those stupid forced siege missions.

We are COOKED. In all seriousness, keep the story for low rank AND skippable and I'm fine with it.

However, they need to beef up HR, more HR only monsters with simple in-game story (no cutscenes, just npc telling you xxx appeared, go hunt it). They kinda did this with Wilds, but only like 3-4 quests.

Rise didn't have a great story or anything but when I think back on Rise... I respect that it didn't waste my time. Monsters are attacking, go kill them. I kinda felt like it just let me start off doing high rank style progression, even if the difficulty hadn't ramped up yet.

Wilds story is a little more fleshed out but honestly the entire thing is still a slog from a pacing perspective. Go here, talk to this NPC, now talk to this NPC, now spend 15 minutes on this guided path while NPCs lecture you, watch a cut scene, fight a monster that poses no challenge at all, talk to an NPC again, repeat. It took like 6-8 hours to finally hit high rank and actually have some freedom to play the game.

I would much rather experience Rise again or at least have an experienced monster hunter player option that lets you go a little more free form if you'd like.

Absolutely wrong. It's popular despite the story. From casuals to longtime series fans in my experience, the easiest thing to agree on is that the story is shit. Made even worse by long forced walking sections where you can't deviate from the path or the group.

Yes nothing to do with cultivating an audience for nearly two decades and releasing some pretty good games. Reputation means nothing, the addictive game play loops and hanging out with your friends killing monsters. The story is usally laughable in the main line games.

I meant Wilds. Sorry.

Rise was fine.

No. The mainstreaming of the formula is what brought so many customers to the franchise this time around. Having a fleshed out main story line is part of that strategy, along with various simplifications and all. Elitists scoffing at these changes should figure out that it's these new customers that will keep the boat afloat in the future and enable Capcom to produce bigger and better entries in the series.

Edit: Yes, of course the story's shit. Like in every single other video game ever produced. News at 11.

Not even kidding... this game would be BETTER if it didn't have a story or a simple straightforward limited story like MH: World. It only holds the game back.

I wonder if this is a comment on the Japanese market where things are different to us in the west. RE: Operation Raccoon City was a popular game there.

Yep. So much more enjoyable than the barebones story in previous MH games.
Never enjoyed MH games before at all. It was like doing dailies in gachas

I haven't completed the story yet, but the tone is what bothers me the most. I feel like the devs read all those pieces about how World is a 'colonial fantasy' and took them a bit too seriously. Now it's all about being respectful to different cultures and 'getting permission to hunt.' You made a game where you slowly kill the same monster 20 times so you can craft a sword from its bones and scales. Stop it with the preachy nonsense.

This IS the story for me!

Sexy ladies will never not carry a piece of entertainment media regardless of quality. It's the only reason why games like DOA Beach Volleyball and Onichambara even sell.

So, quite why the woke liberal leftist western game devs have selected to stack their games with fugly tramps is anyone's guess. They're literally leaving money on the table.

I forgot MH had any story at all. There must be some setup to systematically hunting down and clearing out all those monsters! Getting ready for the timber crew to deforest the place and build apartments, or something.

MH World story "Dragon! Why are they attacking? Oh that's why..."
MH Rise story "Dragon! Why are they attacking? Oh that's why..."
I am going to assume it's the same with Wilds.

Not really walking. You move arou d with Seikret, but theres some chitchat in middle while you go to new zone them you fight monster, go back and repeat until prologue story is done in some 10h. You can of course do other stuff in middle of story, but you have to finish story to start real game with high rank, new monsters, investigations etc

They did it first on World.

Now there's also auto walking, you press one button and the lizard chocobo takes you to the objective.

Capcom is making their games more and more accessible to casuals....

I still like them, but... Yeah... They’re trying way too hard to please new consumers.

I hope that the new Onimusha will have a hard mode available at the start, because both DD2 and MH Wilds are quite easy.
