Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition for SEGA Genesis

This is the absolute coolest ( I do not even know if you could call it a hack? ) thing ... I have seen in the home brew community in a long time and that is saying something. While not super new it has been updated a few times over the years.

So what is it?

Back when Mortal Kombat was released on the SEGA Genesis / Megadrive it seemed to a lot of people that it just wasn't as good as it could be. There was a few reasons for that. One the time frame was very short to get it out and two the publisher cheapened out on the Genesis cart and the devs were stuck with smaller storage than what was needed. Because of that a lot of corners had to be cut. missing animations, missing sounds, missing graphics and horribly compressed sounds at that.

Arcade Edition sought to rectify that and eventually become a major over haul of the classic port improving on everything. The Video posted below goes into more detail, but it is a lot more than just a quick face lift.

It runs on real consoles and shows that it wasn't always about the ability of the hardware as time and budget played a large role as well.

I do hope to see more projects like this in the future as I am always playing my old consoles and love all the new games and updates being released.

Is nothing new per say(already knew since DF episode about it) but is actually a pretty cool project. Make you think about the overall limitations back at time.

Semi relevant, but worth a watch. The dudes putting these arcade games together back in the day were basically just teams of feral nerds. It's no wonder home ports were terrible.

Wasn't there something similar done with Streetfighter 2 on the Genesis? ie improved sound etc? I'd love to see someone or a team do a conversion of Super Streetfighter 2 to the Sega CD, with redbook audio.....if that happened back then it would have boosted sales of the add-on no end..

this is awesome but back in the 90s for some reason i really warmed to the SNES MK port, genesis port was fun but didn't have the color range of Snes of course.

Yeah I had both eventually but the snes port in the US played like shit with horrible input lag. Interesting enough it was fixed for the Japanese release. So if you ever wanted to play the snes port again get the super famicom version.
