Come. The fuck. On.

An NBC affiliate is killing off Hannibal.

Utah’s Salt Lake City station KSL TV posted on their Facebook page that it will no longer air the ratings-challenged freshman drama. “After viewing the past few episodes, as well as receiving numerous complaints from viewers, KSL TV will cancel the airing of the NBC show Hannibal on Thursday evenings,” the station posted. “This decision was made due to the extensive graphic nature of this show. The time slot will be replaced with a special edition of KSL 5 News at 9 p.m. NBC remains a valued partner to KSL TV. KSL is confident that with the proliferation of digital media, those who wish to view the program can easily do so.”

Sources say Hannibal will find a way into the market via the local CW affiliate. “We’re going across the street, as they say,” a source said.

NBC had no comment. The broadcast network, along with showrunner Bryan Fuller, previously decided to pull one of the episodes nationwide due to the hour containing disturbing subject matter in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. NBC then offered the episode online.

KSL is owned by the Church of Latter Day Saints and has a history of refusing to air NBC programming that it finds objectionable. Previously the station refused to run the vaguely risque short-lived drama The Playboy Club and tolerance-endorsing comedy The New Normal.

CW to the rescue, then?

While their position is quite silly considering how pervasive this stuff is, I'm not going to object to their conservative stance if it is indeed their belief.

Same state that brought us Cleanflicks, censored Titanic boobies, and Larry Miller refusing to show Brokeback Mountain in his theaters.

They seem to have good taste in shows to boycott at least. Though not that I agree for him playing benevolent censor.

The new normal was offensive to liberals everywhere. Its like 7th Heaven, Full House and Bravo channel got thrown into a blender and turbo charged.

How difficult is it to just change the fucking channel.

I really wish the best for this show. It's the best show on network TV right now and there's no way it's going to be renewed. Why oh why did I get invested.

so is this show any good?

It's great.

This has happened before for their affiliate. It's really not a big deal, I don't think Salt Lake City is a big market. Most of Hannibal's audience will come from NYC/Chicago/LA anyway.

That's false.

Affiliates should not be permitted to exempt themselves from programming provided by the parent network.

The penalty for doing so should be terminating the affiliation. Of course, given that they're an NBC affiliate I'm not sure that's a punishment

They should not, but I'm pretty sure that KLS TV is the largest affiliate in Salt Lake City due to its ties to the Mormon church. They don't carry The New Normal, they don't carry Saturday Night Live, and now, Hannibal. It shouldn't be allowed, but NBC would lose the market if they punished them.

And I'm confident with the proliferation of power buttons and remotes that can change channels and free will, that those won't don't wish to view the program could easily do so even if you did air it.

I still believe, Ivy. I still believe.

Edit: Could Hannibal really air on the CW? How? Aren't they completely different companies?

Sure. Example:

Legend of the Seeker was produced by ABC Studios but aired syndicated throughout the country. That meant that in different markets, different affiliates could pick it up, even though it didn't have a central broadcaster.

And I'm confident with the proliferation of power buttons and remotes that can change channels and free will, that those won't don't wish to view the program could easily do so even if you did air it.

I guess they don't want other people enjoying the show. It's the only logical explanation.

How is this allowed?

They're just so traumatized by what they're seeing that they're unable to press the channel button.

I don't see why NBC does not just drop them and go to another station. I'm sure there's another station there without a affiliate.

So how exactly does a religious organization get to own a broadcast channel that uses the governments airwaves?

How is this even possible?

Is the show worth watching? Is it going to get cancelled? I have all the episodes on my DVR. I don't want to get burned by NBC again.
