NeoGAF Camera Equipment Thread | MK II

Bought a used Ricoh GR II as a always-with-me camera.

Wow, the controls on this camera are grat. And it's really small considering it has an APSC sensor and a 28mm equivalent 2.8 lens. Only thing missing is a viewfinder.

Always wanted that camera. Ricoh is quality.

I was pretty amazed at how much visibility I have with full frame at 24mm now. I could never fit a single church around here into the frame with APS-C cameras. This is a bracketed set of shots merged in LR/PS.

I bought the A7II specifically for the IBIS. Using exclusively vintage lenses, it was the only way I'm ever getting any stabilization haha.

Yeah I only regret not getting the A7ii in low light situations lol. Thankfully I don't do low light that much to where it was absolutely necessary.

I wouldn't mind having it in the future though.

This. I didn't know that the A7 II was 1080p-only. Now I will definitely buy the A6500 or the A7 III if announced. I want that 4K video.

The dumb thing is that the A7s does 4K video externally through an external recorder, so why couldn't they bring that over to the A7ii as well?

I get that 50mbps and S-Log2 internally is great and all but the camera basically came out in 2015, it was pretty clear that everyone's moving to 4K.

Now get the Samyang 14mm and be amazed that nothing will fill the frame ever again.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Thinking about investing into a GoPro Hero 5 and a Karma Grip.

Looking around, and it seems everyone is sold out of the grip - but it's readily available at the two Best Buys next to me.

Am I foolish to let it slip away, or has stock been pretty decent?

Would anyone be interested in doing photo challenges on GAF? Someone suggests a theme/subject/whatever and everyone submits photos around that theme?

I'm not sure if I have the time to head something up like that, but I think it could be fun.

Have you used the Sony? I went back and forth on this for far too long. Still sort of contemplating.

Yep my brother has the sony so I have used it quite a bit. The sony is more of an all-rounder due to the stabilization and faster auto-focus so it beats the Sigma in terms of video but the Sigma takes better stills. The sigma is not the greatest for video due to the manual focus ring as it moves based on velocity. The Sigma is bigger and heavier than the sony. The lenses are pretty close overall, more just based on personal preference if you take more stills vs. video or prefer 30mm over 35mm. I prefer the wider 30mm so I chose the Sigma.

Yesssss, a photo challenge would be fantastic.

I've always wanted to do something like that but I just know how to shoot creatively not come up with things to shoot lol. Instagram's photo challenges are kinda lame and focus too much on "Aesthetic" or some random BS that's too hipsterish or whatever lol.

Absolutely!

I, personally, prefer challenges where it's a single word or phrase, but then as a photographer you must come up with the most creative way to meet that challenge.

Yes, strong photography skills and the ability to frame a shot are important, but it puts a little more stock in creativity over raw talent and nice gear.

I would actually love to see any challenges that are made up.

Like the guy above me, I can usually find cool angles of things to shoot, but have difficulty figuring out what to shoot. To that end, (If everyone else would be agreeable to this), I think the challenges would be a bit "easier" if they are less vague. The challenge should give, more or less, clear left and right limits, or a clear set of subjects, and then the challenge being what photo to make of those, rather than a challenge that's based on a vague and nebulous "idea". That's just my opinion, I know people would just as likely prefer the "idea" based challenge.

What about a 6mm FF lens?
Nikkor-6mm-f2.8-lens.jpg

The FoV is 220 degrees so it can kinda see what's behind it.

Sp0rsk used to host a monthly photo challenge thread, but it kinda died out after a while.

A photo challenge would be cool.

I almost only take pictures when I'm going out of town or something... so I don't take much pictures anymore.

In other news I busted out some of my m42 lenses over the holidays and enjoyed using them. Now I want to get more, or maybe a legit nice one.

I didn't even know these were a thing till last night when somebody told me about the DJI Osmo, which sounds pretty awesome too.

Edit: Saw there was also the "Osmo Mobile" which you can use with your phone or if you're feeling creative you could make a gopro adapter. The DJI phone app looks very useful.

Put me down as another who would have an interest in a photo challenge thread. I'm attached to one on FB and while I don't often contribute it is at least fun to follow. I think I'd be more inclined to be active with a GAF one.

Yeah, I've been following the DJI options for a little while now, and that's the direction I was originally heading.

It's really tough choosing he product, cause they all still feel a little, I dunno... "beta" at this point?

Like, the regular Osmo is right under $600 currently. However, the sound is apparently dog-shit even if you don't expect decent sound, and the rolling shutter is really bad.

The Osmo+ has a zoom, which is nice. But not much else.

I really like that the Osmo line has a joystick for manual, precise control of the camera. I like that they have replaceable batteries.

However, the entire Osmo line has some pretty glaring flaws: the camera is pretty worthless without utilizing the entire gimbal and stick, unlike the GoPro that can be disconnected and is tiny. The Osmo line utilizes your phone for a screen to frame your shots - otherwise you're just guessing as to what you see. And, of course, the Osmo line is a lot more "delicate."

The GoPro lacks precise control. It has a few less features. It has a non-replaceable battery. But the camera can disconnect and be super useful still, and is obviously a lot more durable - and also waterproof (The camera at least). And, another big plus - the whole kit is smaller and travels more easily.

Arg.

I went ahead and placed an order for the Hero 5 and the Karma Grip last night. I purchased from Best Buy and Amazon, so I'll have ~two weeks or so to try it and determine if I want to keep or return.

I'd really, really love to get an Osmo Pro and utilize the interchangeable M43 lens options - that would be perfect! But it's $2K. The RAW is just stupid right now - it eats 200MB/sec for 4K and the 512GB SSD is $800. Screw that.

Snagged a Fuji X-E1 at 200€ mint on Ebay. It'll be a good start to enter the Fuji ecosystem, and I'll be able to change for a better/higher model when a good sale comes up.
Hope the low-light EVF issues won't be too harsh.

Now onto lenses :) Currently split between the 35mm f2 and the 23mm f2, anybody can comment if one has a definite edge in quality? They seem to be found at nearly the same price.

Thanks ! If I'm correct, the 1.4 is much bigger though ? I'm mainly transitioning to this system to avoid having a too big equipment that was preventing me from "pick up and shoot" use with my previous 700D, so I'm wary of buying too big lenses. Is quality such a step up that it might be an interesting concession?

Reviews say that image quality is better but personally I do like the WR and the pocket ability of the 2.0.
(But in the end I mainly shoot with the 35mm f2)

i am a photo enthusiast but my photo skills are pretty basic.
I have purchase quite recently a Nikon D3200 which came along with a 18-55 lens. I would like to purchase a new lens which will allow me to zoom more.
I am considering a 55-200 or a 55-300 lens.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.

I have a 23 1.4 and the 35 f2 (amongst others). I much prefer the 23 length (35 FF equivalent), and the extra light is a huge boost at night and for portraits.

However, the 35f2 is still exceptionally sharp. For its size and price, it's pretty unbeatable (if you're okay with the FL). 23f2 is probably just as great.

On my Canon I used to shoot mostly with the 50mm, so it'll be a bit wider if I'm correct, and I think I'll like it. Guess it'll mostly come down to which interesting price I'll find first, they all seem like great lenses all around.

Quick slightly off topic question. But I'm sure you guys will be able to answer it. I edited a photo in Lightroom on my Macbook, which I don't really use that often anymore. So I want to get the settings I used on some particular pictures on my iMac. Is that possible? If so, how?

im a bit confused, but it sounds like you want to save the edit settings you made on one of your lightroom's and use those on the other lightroom install?

If thats the cuase on the photo in lightroom under the develop module go to presets and click the plus sign, give it a name and specify you want to save in the preset and then save, you can then (in windows) right click and export it. You would then import that preset in your other lightroom install.

Export and set the file format to original. It will save an XMP file with it. Have the XMP file in the same directory as the photo when you import in other LR.

Both have plastic mounts so durability is the same. They both have good IQ. The 55-200mm VR has a slight advantage when it comes to how much light it allows in, but the 55-300mm VR has a slight advantage in reach (if your into bird watching or wildlife watching). If you're not into bird watching or things that need the reach of the 300mm then I'd get the 55-200mm and enjoy it's compactness and thicker wallet.

I own a 55-200mm VR and I love it and the newer version is even more compact than my old one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RUBK53Y/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Just bought the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my A6000. Supposed to be the sharpest E-Mount lens according to dxo, moreso than even some of the Zeiss lenses.

I'm in Japan right now, and got it tax free for only $250 :D

Going to a few temples in Kyoto today to put it to the test!

In other news, Yodobashi Camera might be my favorite store in the world. I was in heaven walking around.

Now I'm wondering if I should return my 35mm Sony when it gets here and pick up this Sigma. Decisions decisions.

I would return it. After watching and reading reviews, that Sigma lens is really impressive for its price point. Ultra-sharp images and the build quality is fantastic.

To be sure, I am talking about the 30mm 1.4 DC DN C lens that is under $400.

Also, can anyone verify if a memory card with 90MB/s write speed will be good enough for 4K video without any cut out? Looking at a SanDisk 128GB of one.

One of the reasons I went with the Sony was reports of slow autofocus on the Sigma (particularly compared to the Sony). What has been people's experience with that?
