Key Quotes (from Google Translate) "Leading domestic game companies have entered into an unprecedented competition to win orders for Starcraft, Blizzard's representative IP (intellectual property)."

"According to the game industry on the 28th, four major domestic game companies, NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton, are in full-scale competition to develop new games based on the Starcraft IP and secure global publishing rights. It has been confirmed that some of these game companies have gone all the way to Blizzard’s headquarters in California to hold presentations in order to secure a competitive edge."

"The scope of this contract reportedly includes the development of new games in various genres such as RPG (Role Playing Game) and shooting games, as well as publishing rights in the global market. Major domestic game companies aim to kill two birds with one stone: expanding their presence in the global market and generating profits based on Blizzard’s core IP.

NCSoft is a company with outstanding development capabilities and operational know-how in the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) field, and is known to be the closest in the field of RPG development utilizing the StarCraft universe.

Nexon has entered the competition by proposing a unique way to utilize the StarCraft IP based on its experience in creating successful global titles in various genres.

Netmarble is leveraging its experience in the mobile game market to combine the StarCraft IP with the mobile platform. The strategy is to simultaneously target popularity and deep gameplay.

Krafton, which achieved global success with the battle royale game 'Battleground', is known to have challenged this contract by planning to develop a new StarCraft based on its own development capabilities. Regarding this, a Krafton official said, "There is nothing confirmed."

Currently, Blizzard is known to be looking for game companies with development capabilities, publishing capabilities, and global marketing capabilities in the process of selecting partners. They are being careful in selecting partners to entrust with the world-renowned IP of Starcraft, and are closely examining each game company’s proposals and operational plans during the contract process.

Whether this contract is successful or not is expected to have a significant impact on the global market entry and brand value of Korean game companies."

The team that created BroodWar is long since retired from Blizzard and I have no confidence given the current abandoned state of Sc2 balance that they know how to make a good RTS game anymore.

I put at least 20,000 hours into Broodwar ladder back in the days and it was blissful, the insane Bonjwa runs of players like Flash, Jaedong, Saviour, Nada, etc

it really was a golden era of RTS that will never be again

Well this isn't going to end badly....

Starcraft gacha in 5..4..3...

Assuming the rumour is true ofc. On the plus side Blizzard get to say 'it wasn't us'. Also the check should prop up GP for a bit.

The knowledge to make a new rts with good mechanics like SC2 is lost. If is a MMO I dont think will work with Starcraft universe.

It's about time we get a Starcraft Ghost or some other single player Starcraft+co op game.

It's almost 20 years late but I still got hope and I'll still welcome one. I remember reading Starcraft Ghost on the Gameinformer mag and was so waiting for it.

It could be a less action but more immersive less linear version of Space Marine 2. Exploring a planet with giant Terran Command Centers and other bases and buildings scattered out. Zerg horror deep down underground and slowly infesting the land. Protoss coming in the later part of the game to spice things up even further.

Imagine a gacha where you have to open a bunch to build an army and every unit has a point value. The free rolls you get are enough for a small skirmish.
Then play matches with a set point limit, like 40k. Build loadouts and play against other people.

It almost sounds like a good idea. "Good" as in it would earn money.

My biggest problem with potential StarCraft return is that outside RTS and cybersport it feels like WH40k from Temu. And after games like Space Marine 2 and W40k breaking into mainstream in general it would be very hard to convince modern audiences to jump back in.

And I write this as someone who genuinely cares for StarCraft.

I have no confidence in any of these companies. That being said, neither do I have confidence in Blizzard to make a good StarCraft game...

Because that is what StarCraft is, there is absolutely no way to come up with such a world without copy/paste from Warhammer.
I'm not judging though while being the huge WH40k nerd. That universe worked for RTS but I'm afraid it was just left to rot for a long-long time. WarCraft was always in development and in flux and now barely anyone could call it an Old World WHFB copycat (especially sine GW themselves rebooted the whole setting to AoS).

StarCraft never was given a chance to shine and properly differentiate itself. In 2015 the brand was kinda influentual for expansions. In 2025, especially with WH40k finally hitting it's mainstream popularity arc, I think that it's too little too late to revive StarCraft.

It's pure my stupid shower thoughts, of course. Will be gald to be proven wrong.

The StarCraft universe is incredible, sad that the franchise has been dormant for so long. Ghost was a really interesting concept that never made it to life. There is definitely potential for an MMO, but if Nexon is involved I would not get any hopes up.

A new Starcraft RTS, on the same level as Starcraft Broodwar, is impossible to make (without the right people, which Blizzard doesn't have). Anything else featuring the Starcraft universe could work out. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Honestly I wouldn’t trust anyone other than a Korean company with it. SC is basically their national pastime.

I’d given up hope of ever playing a good SC game again with how shit blizzard has become. Please, go ahead.

I played starcraft for single player only, imagine that. That's still the only way I'm interested.

Just imagine old blizzard's cinematics with today's tech.
