Next iteration of handheld PCs are about to start

Supposedly about 18% more powerful than the 7840U powering the Ally and the Go while consuming 25% less power.

EDIT: My bad, forgot they're actually using the Z1 extreme which are similar to the 7840U.

It’s going to be interesting to see performance in next MSI, Asus and Lenovo handhelds. MSI is going with new Intel chipset which has higher GPU performance vs 8840U (in theory).

The big question is going to be price, especially with potential tariffs on the way.

Steam Deck 2 is the most likely candidate for this.
There definitely has to be a content pipeline. Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation are all top candidates, but I could see other big tech titans - namely Meta or Apple - in a position to flirt with doing something innovative.

I could see Meta and Sony contemplating how to broaden VR by coupling it to a handheld.

Switch 2 will give you top tier DLSS, developed exclusively for this platform.

Switch 2 isn't a PC though, which means it has an entirely different game library?

Seriously, find a new hobby other than calling PCs pocket calculators, it's self-deprecating humor that makes you look bad.

Saying as someone who will be there for Switch 2 day 1.

edit: excuse me, personal not pocket calculator. It's all equally silly.

I thought this was a troll thread by posting a picture of some old device, but it's actually a thing.
There's a fucking keyboard on it!

I get major “Palm Pilot” vibes from the state of this space of the industry right now. As in, someone is going to introduce a product that will drastically dominate the landscape ala iPhone.
Steam Deck 2 is the most likely candidate for this.
I think it would need to be on an OS level. The hardware designs have been getting better and better.

Maybe it's just me, but for portable windows and steam consoles, it is currently much more beneficial to have a non-touch keyboard for the amount of tinkering you have to do, especially with installing mods.

I wish the Sony handheld would be able to easily use the other pc launchers as well as natively run games, but that might be something Xbox's version has a better chance of doing.

Using these handheld PCs without a keyboard really sucks so most users prefer to have one built-in. The Steam Deck mitigates the need by not using Windows.

8840U is a very modest upgrade on 7840U. The Rog Ally X will remain the overall handheld performance king for some time ahead. Probably through all of 2025. The GPD Win 4 is limited by a small battery and fans.

Small battery? No thanks… ally x spoiled me
Yup. 45Wh, which is slightly more than half of Rog Ally X. I don't see playing games at higher TDPs of 18-22W as viable on this thing. And the more condensed cooling system will most likely emit a lot of sound trying to keep it cool. As last con, it has a mere 6'' display. IMO even 7'' is too little for a Windows handheld. But I guess it's hard to create a Vita-like PC handheld while also competing with the chunkier boys in the top performing segment. I think you either get one or the other.

The slash in the OP image is to indicate that GPD is still selling the 2024 version with the 8840U. The 2025 version is using HX 370.

EDIT: I'm trying to look for a post on Reddit that said GPD has actually discontinued the ones with 8840 and are just getting rid of the remaining stock. Can't find it right now.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
probably another handheld that cater to niche market and gets forgotten later, like the others.

Not that great tbh. Waiting on next generation Zen 6 APU's next year before even considering a new handheld. Hopefully we'll see some devices with LPDDR6 some time next year. LPDDR5/X is sooo old now.

This is dogshit my guy, the Z1 Extreme is damn near 2 years old. A $200 price increase and 18% more power isn't even close to being a "next wave of portables".

I said iteration so I wasn't implying a generational leap. GPD shits one out for each of their product lines nearly every year. It's not really a price increase either because that's pretty much their starting price every time they do a refresh. I'm interested in seeing what other manufacturers will do now than Zen 5 for portables is here.

Why would it set the world on fire when the first Deck didn't? Sure it's done well enough but it's still a super niche product.
As a whole the category of x86 hybrid handheld computer is likely to stay niche. So we're talking about who gets to be the biggest dog in a small yard.

I see the first deck as somewhat of a beta test for valve. They've spent a long time refining hardware, software and distribution. By the time the next version comes they're in a great position to really expand the reach of their machine.

Will it sell 50 million? Hell no. But I could see it making well over 5 million. Which would make it easily the biggest seller compared to everyone else in the space.

Well, yeah? I was disputing the statement that the Deck 2 will become the iPhone of handheld computers and transform the market.
