NPD: April Video Game Disc Sales Up 8%

Sales of packaged media video games for consoles and hand-held devices reportedly topped $251 million in the four-week April retail period, ending May 2, an increase of 8% from $232.4 million during the previous-year period.

The uptick in software sales was largely driven by stay-at-home gamers buying content on the Internet due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic shuttering most retailers, including GameStop.

The two top sellers in April were Nintendo’s March release Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Switch and Square Enix’s new release Final Fantasy VII Remake, exclusively for PlayStation 4. Another popular title, NBA 2K20 from Take-Two Entertainment has reportedly sold more than 12 million units since launching on Sept. 6, 2019 — up 33% from the previous title, NBA 2K19.

“We believe that robust Internet spending was largely offset by store closures and curbside service across much of the country, with room left over for year-over-year retail growth in April following a breakout March performance,” Michael Pachter, media analyst with Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles, wrote in a May 22 note.

Pachter, who disclosed the NPD data, revealed that about 411,000 PS4 consoles were sold in April, exceeding his estimate of 235,000 units. Consumers bought 329,000 Xbox One units topping the analyst’s 175,000 unit estimate.

The popular Nintendo Switch device continues to lead the market with 808,000 units sold — double Pachter’s 400,000 unit estimate.

“The Switch’s status as a must-have item among many stay-at-home consumers drove a terrific April figure that would have been meaningfully higher if not for widespread sellouts throughout the month,” Pachter wrote. “The Switch led industry unit sales for the 17th consecutive month.”

Sony and Microsoft plan to launch new-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, respectively, this fall/winter.

Every month, the NPD Group releases information on the top-selling games across all video game platforms in the United States. While it doesn't account for worldwide sales, it does provide a good look at one of the largest video game markets. Mat Piscatella, an analyst for NPD, has shared the results for April 2020, tracked from April 5 to May 2.

Spending hit a record high in the month of April 2020, with the sales of the Nintendo Switch breaking the record set by the Wii in 2008. Sales of Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were up 160% year-over-year altogether. Final Fantasy 7 Remake makes its debut at #1 on the chart and is instantly the third best-selling game of 2020. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons also keep on going strong at #2 and #3 for the month respectively.
Like always, remember that NPD is based on dollar sales, not units sold.

1.5m consoles in April, with stock shortages. yeah there are some exceptional circumstances, but even so, amazing numbers.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but this was all part of the plan by the gaming companies to drive up consumption and tech companies to transition to work from home.
All part of the plan as predicted by Hideo in a codec call.

Nice that gaming seems to fare well during many of these crises..

The same happened in 2008, and 2001 too. The analysts were saying gaming would see a negative trend, but it continued to go up..

Animal Crossing is a monster as expected.

Why ? Animal Crossing has always being an outstanding IP, since the beginning. Like Monster Hunter World it was about time millions of people around the world finally see how great the franchise is, the success is deserved.

It could, but it depends on Sony jumping ship quickly to the PS5 and Nintendo being willing to drop stuff like a new Pokemon and Mario Kart 9.

What I think is almost certain at this point is that it is going to outsell the Wii.

It's so weird seeing Switch hardware so high but so few Nintendo evergreens in the top 20. Guess there's been a big shift towards digital.

Also nice to see Mana on the Switch chart.

Next generation hasn't hit yet, reality of the massive difference hasn't had a chance to set in yet.

Switch will be on fire until it's not, which will probably be until mid to end next year where it will start to decline finally.

Good for everybody, nice to see games/hardware move. It is easy to break the numbers down and talk bad, but this rise is good for gaming as a whole.

Such a nonsense take. The Switch barely gets any games that come to the other systems as it is. The only thing that will slow Switch down is lacking lineup and saturation. The switch is in a different playing field, it won't impact the next systems and they won't impact it just like the 3ds isn't impacted by the release of a ps4. The Switch will likely become the second highest selling Nintendo system in history and a higher seller than anything MS has put out, and easily higher than ps1 and ps3. It's also likely going to have a record breaking year this year if the supply can keep up. The only thing that will be hurt by the next systems is their current gen siblings.

Glad to see games like Luigi's Mansion 3 and Persona 5 Royal on the list. I'm sad that Sakura Wars is not there but I can't say I'm surprised since games like that just don't do big number in west.

I just hope Saga had realistic expectation for Sakura Wars and wont stop releasing next games in west like Capcom did with Ace Attorney.

...Because that's totally untrue? These massive sellers on Switch tend to be always made by Nintendo and are known Nintendo owned IPs. Generally third party Nintendo platform exclusives fail in terms of sales.
