NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Really solid sales for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, it didn't have a drop over the previous title which sold exactly the same (273,000).

The market for KH is solid. Can't wait for KH3.

Also, 130k for NES rom hacks is amazing to me. Does that include digital?

Just gonna drop this now before I'm out for the night:

Sony has $20 billion in cash. Microsoft has $80 billion in cash. Microsoft is worth $300 billion. Sony is worth more than $20 billion.

Just to see if that helps put some things in perspective...

So you're saying Sony should create a Kickstarter so they can have a price drop i get it.

Really impressive.

In my eyes the XB1 was a clusterfuck. The TV crap and all the retractions and scaling back. The hot mess attempt to push Kinect, then a full on retreat on that, the bad pricing versus the PS4. Just a freaking mess of a console launch.

And yet they are clawing back and have good momentum. I saw this gen working out for Sony the way the PS2 did, it was looking like it would dominate with no real competition, but daaaaaaamn was I wrong.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but isn't the general concensus that the Xbox One is approaching 10 mil WW while the PS4 is closing in on 20 mil WW. I know a 2:1 ratio isn't how dominant the PS2 was, but that is still pretty eye opening.

Granted the Xbox One may carry over the holiday momentum, but I find it fascinating how myopic people get in NPD thread (not directed at you).

I mean look at it like this: Microsoft scrambled together a price cut, then some pretty damn good bundles on top of that to win the holiday season. And they killed it, it was a dominant holiday victory. But they bled to win 2 months while Sony was pretty modest and still won the entire year.

So if you step back, it's really eye opening I think. If Sony is able to do a good job marketing The Order 1886 and Bloodborne, they can have some early year success. And Uncharted 4 alone is enough for Sony to compete during the last half of the year, let alone all of the other exclusives and high profile multiplatform games Sony is marketing or associated with.

I guess I'm just getting a kick out of the NPD thread :)

I wonder if Sony even cares that MS is catching up. They've got the rest of the world locked up and they've got to be happy still selling systems at $400 not to mention all the PS+ accounts that go with that. The PS4 has probably wildly outperformed their expectations already.

I think you're right and wrong.

It's business, not a dick waving competition, so as long as they're making bank they're good. But, BUT! They of course have analysts (highly paid) assess the short and long term financial ramifications of each price point and resulting market share estimations. It gets good and complicated factoring in all of the multitudes of revenue sources and the impact of each unit sold but I'm going to have to assume Sony is playing it according to their strategy (good or bad depending on what the CEO needs to make happen relative to internal forecasts and stretch goals).

The price for Kinect $150, but the manufacturing costs are a way less than that.

The parts used to assemble the console itself — not including the Kinect, the controller or anything else — cost $332, Rassweiler estimated, meaning that the other items add about $139 to the cost. The controller costs about $15, and contains Wi-Fi and Bluetooth components from Marvell Technology.

$332+15+ misc and that's from over a year ago. I would say right now at $349 they are breaking even or a little positive

I think we all should be happy that dedicated gaming devices are still selling well.

That is the spirit.

And in general the PS4 and Xone are both doing great. The PS4 especially if you look worldwide. And the Wii U is looking a little less hopeless. Not completely dead like it seemed 6 months ago.

So yeah consoles are still a thing, and this is good news.

Are NES Remix Pack and Ultimate NES Remix really counted together in NPD's report?
Yet Pokemon still isn't?

I just don't understand this company.

How do you know they're selling at a loss? They removed the expensive Kinect peripheral and its been reported they gained some manufacturing wins. It was probably a loss with the holiday bundles because of the games involved, but now I'd wager it's about break even with real revenue coming from Gold, accessories like the controller, headsets, media remote, and of course software sales.
Loss (and a pretty big one per console sold) is pretty much a lock given the following.

- both the PS4 and the XB1 were given around $400 in cost of fabrication at launch (isupply I think). The XB1 slightly more expensive if memory serves due to ESRAM and size of the chipset
- the XB1 undersold compared to its production for most of 2014, particularly early in the year and MS themselves said they were doing drawdowns on retail channels and were lowering production. That means no cost saving on size of production.
- By end of 2014 it was pretty much expected that both consoles were making around $50 per unit sold. Cf Sony saying they were profitable per PS4 sold in early/ mid 2014.
- MS not only dropped $50 on the price, returning to 0 profitability per unit, they bundled 2 THIRD PARTY games, which should easily cost around $40-$50 per bundle to MS. Ubisoft isn't in the business of banking MS after all.
Add to that the often available $50 gift card, and you'll see why it's reasonable to think that MS has been losing between $50 and $100 per bundle sold depending on the promotion.

This being said, they can take the loss and their strategy is obviously to expand the userbase, but tbh it's looking a little bit desperate. Specially this sudden return to $349 after two weeks of being outsold in January.

in the US, 2 million for 3DS and 1.3 million for Wii U

speaking of which, those who said the Wii U version would sell better in the west because of some contrived multiplayer *reasons*, LOL

Why? 3DS version has been out for 3 months and managed 2 million, Wii U version has been out for a little over a month and has sold more than half that.

No, they don't care MS is catching up in NA. NA is just bonus for Sony tbh. MS has too many resources at their disposal to go one on one. Sony almost had to do nothing since the start and they already reached the number they are at in NA. MS on the other hand essentially threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Xbone, and it finally started paying off for the Holidays. Sony is not gonna start doing that.

My prediction sees at the end of the gen, Xbone with probably a 3 million advantage over the PS4 in NA.

In all seriousness, Sony really needs to step up though.

2015 should be there year with the amount of exclusives coming there way. Microsoft is getting a lot of momentum though and it look slide they are going back to selling the console at $350.

there were very few new games this month. many that already had the consoles already had those games.

I agree that many who already had the consoles bought many of those multiplats in November. Still doesn't mean there weren't a decent number of other people who bought them in December though. Still had people (or parents) getting them in December as Christmas presents for others who already owned the current gen consoles.

good momentum by slashing the price by 150 bucks in 13 months and taking losses with every unit sold?
Are you that clueless about how this business works? The momentum comes with games sold and license fees from those games sold, which based on December appears to be quite a lot.

Looking back at that thread you're correct on the early Dec. as opposed to the end of November part. The PS4 also had a ton of promotions in the US as well, which is why it sold considerably better than it did in November.(in addition to it being a 5-week month)We should probably figure 5.0-5.1m for XB1 then at that time.

How did you come to that 36% for November? Sony didn't release any sold through at that time.

And Sony had promotions everywhere beside the US, MS concentrated mainly in US and UK.

Is this inside information or a prediction?

Its not inside information. Its something I believe will happen based on demand from consumers for it, and seeing these sales results for an HD remake on one console on a last gen system.

Consider it an educated guess based on a retail perspective.

yes they need to step it up because they are selling better than the ps2 and right around wii right now. both the best selling consoles ever. yep gotta step it up.

Toad doing that well warms every single part of my being and heart.

Ready for Adventure!!!

meh...this NPD is boring...

No meltdowns = No lol's

Both consoles did great, good for Sony good for MS and eh...whatevs -_-

No offense... but.... REALLY glad you're disappointed if that's what you were hoping for.

meh...this NPD is boring...

Every1 said X1 probably won again but it slowed down mid-way in December, and Sony did some deals of there own, so gap probably not as wide.

Seems to be exactly what happened here.

No meltdowns = No lol's

Was Wiiu strong with Smash sales?

So what you're saying is Microsoft can sell the x1 for $250 next November after getting trounced by Sony the other 10 months of the year.

More power to them I hope it's a x1 slim
