NPD Sales Results for July 2013 [Up2: 3DS Minimum, AC:NL, LM2/NSMBU LTDs, Xbox 360]

Not an asshole.
Lol Nintendo PR is basically:

"If you buy both Nintendo consoles you have a pretty stacked six months to look forward to."

Ok guys so buy both consoles and Nintendo's release schedule will keep you just busy enough if you buy every single 1st party release.

Which is probably 45% of GAF.

Get your shit together with the Wii U, Ninty.

Gamasutra.
Don't know if it's been posted, but NPD also reports digital sales estimates:
When taking into account our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in July such as used and rentals at $134 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including micro-transactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $593 million, the total consumer spend in July is just under $1.2 billion.
So there is a lot of spending outside of retail. It would be really interesting to know how much revenue has been moved from the software segment of NPD's reporting to the accessory segment (which is where points/money cards are) and how much has been moved out of retail entirely (through credit card purchases directly on digital storefronts).

how does that make the system itself not a success though? that makes the software sales an issue, but since it had consistent good support throughout it's lifetime... what's the issue from the perspective of the platform? good hardware sales. good library of games. I'm sure Sony made money on the platform on the back of the hardware sales and Japanese software sales.

Well, I'm not sure if it makes it a "failure", but I do think it makes it enough to be "not a success." Support doesn't mean anything if the games don't sell (especially if you aren't Sony).

I mean, I guess it's good for consumers. I enjoyed mine. It might've been a success for Sony too, if for no other reason than it entered into the handheld market without completely failing. But for anyone else - like third parties and even first party studios - I don't think they would call it a success.

It's not that. The system was piracy heaven, and software sales greatly suffered as a result. The ecosystem was so toxic that even big games like Final Fantasy Type-0 didn't come over. Sony did little to rectify the problem, and actually made it worse by seemingly treating the system like a red-headed stepchild of the theirs next to the PS2 and PS3.

3DS software sales after 10 quarters:
106.4 million

PSP software sales after 10 quarters:
133.6 million

Of course 3DS is going to pull ahead but so far its software sales have been pretty damn abysmal too.

Apparently OUYA / Nvidia Shield didn't do very well at all this month, each contributing <10,000 to the market.

Source: Japan Source

Remember, OUYA did >13K-<20K last month.

3DS - 150,000 (+14%)
360 - 107,000 (-47%)
PS3 - 79,000 (-43%)

I was great on 3DS and 360....overshot on PS3 by 11K though. :-(

All this discussion about 3DS hardware sales compared to the DS and no mention of much more expensive it is? (Unless I missed it)

$99 is the magic price point for dedicated handhelds in the US. The original DS got away with being successful at a higher price but that had more to do with an unbeatable software lineup than anything.

The 3DS needs to drop to at least $150 for the XL and $129 for the regular model before we see anything approaching DS madness numbers.

Gonna have to agree with this. I misplaced my original DS Lite at one point and, rather than going to my parents house to go look for it (would have taken a whole day), I just went and bought another one without thinking twice about it. I know parents who bought one for each member of the family, adults included, as presents. People were picking these things up like candy.

I did eventually find that first DS, which helped a lot with self-trades across Pokemon generations.

Tablets and smartphones can now project to the tv. With 2 controller support you could have a real fifa/madden/2k experiencesoon enough without having to buy a console

By the time that gets any sort of traction consoles will become mobile tablet like devices themselves. They will become all in one mobile boxes.

It's simply too soon though, even if it is the future. We're about 15+ years off from it becoming the standard I would say. It will have little impact next gen.

I think the 3DS might be surprising depending on how Nintendo handles it. It's quite a late bloomer, a lot of people are just really hearing about it via social contacts. I think if anything is clear traditional console cycles are either already broken given PS3/360 or they will be more demonstrably broken. The transition is the tricky part but even a redesign at this point could make a big impact in overall trajectory. The surrounding gaming landscape isn't improving, 3DS's core of high quality games doesn't seem under threat even as huge tech leaps are made around it. Just the other userbases have gotten bigger and that attracts attention of people socially and of devs. I think that it the most important factor going forward, reducing userbase shrink across transitions but once you have it, you're gold.

If half of those applied for the 30 buck eShop rebate, Nintendo spent a million bucks on eShop credit for the promotion!

A million bucks, a specific fraction of which went toward indie or other 3rd party titles. This turned out to be a great way to both get copies of SMT4 out there, as well as getting people to spend time on the eShop.

Huh. I need to sit down and make some PSP vs 3DS graphs.

Maybe not, I'm not really a graph making kinda guy.

An honest question guys.

PS3 and Xbox360 are selling bad because they cost so much right? So if Sony and MS decide to drop the price to $99-129, wouldn't that eat into the next generation sales? I keep hearing that Wii U is too expensive while the PS360 is cheap bla bla bla. Wouldn't that apply to them too?

Most likely. It's a tough situation, given that there will be a lot of cross-gen titles.
