NPD Sales Results for June 2015 [Up2: Batman, Splatoon]

ESO on XB1 also has no competition in the form of FFXIV Online, which is proving to be doing pretty well on PS4.

Your opinion seems a bit baseless and is a big stretch. There are plenty of MP focused games that have sold more on PS4.

It does have competition, Neverwinter is on X1. Of course FFIV is a much better game so after all these comments I tend to agree with you all on why ESO sold more on Xbox. It wasn't something I considered originally.

Yeah, and EU should get cheaper games and US more expensive. Right?

I'm not sure how you arrived at that implied conclusion. The person you quoted suggested reducing the cost in one region and value-adding a game in another. How does that equate to more expensive software for a region?

June 2008 hardware figures if anyone wants to a gen on gen comparison.

Wii: 666k
PS3: 405k (MGS4 bundle!)
360: 217k

DS: 783k
PSP: 337k

PS2: 189k

Ok thats it. The Wii has the mark of the Beast. Thats explains everything now....

Sony is struggling in the US and they face stronger competition. EU/Rotw sales are still insane. So they should be agressive and even take losses in the US, which they can make up elsewhere.

I have to confess that I mentioned Knack as flamebait/joke ;)
?
Yes they are, but their sales are not phenomenal (compared to last gen and/or EU/RoTW).
????

No worries mate, here is worldwide shipment comparison. Should be able to update these numbers at the end of the month.

If this isnt phenomenal I dont know what is...or what the definition of phenomenal is. Take your pick...

Yes they are, but their sales are not phenomenal (compared to last gen and/or EU/RoTW). And MS isn't far behind. I think they MS and Sony head to head in the US. The difference is negligable.

So they should be more agressive in pricing in the US. They can do this, without making losses, as the make enough profits elsewhere. Eurape peons won't care (except for the UK maybe). Afterall this is about NPD and the US. I think they easily could do a price cut in the US. If it's 50$ or 100$, I can't say. Don't bother about "struggling". It was meant relatively.

Wut?? You can get away with that on the Xbox but no way would you get away with that on the Playstation

I think it would be good for their profits, because XboxOne isn't a real competitor for PS4 in EU mainland and RotW, even if it was clearly cheaper.
I'm not saying that I would appreciate that, but I think it would be a good move for them (financially). People who would know about the price difference probably have a PS4 already.

With Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, and ESO selling more on Xbox than Playstation, and with Xbox marketing Fallout 4, I see Fallout 4 selling more on Xbox in NPD.

Lowered my PlayStation 4 worldwide shipment forecast for CY2015 by 1 million. Although I'm hopeful the PS4 may still get to 36.1m.

For anyone interested, here is my forecast from last year. I was 900,000 units off the actual total.

Same dumb logic. No Witcher games on PS consoles, marketing deal.

Not dumb logic lol

Fallout games on both Xbox and PS. Oh look they did better on Xbox!

Elder Scroll games on both Xbox and PS. Oh look they did better on Xbox!

Fallout 4 on Xbox One and PS4. Xbox marketing deal. I wonder what that's going to end up like.

ESO still did better on Xbox with less than ~770k console than the PS4. What is going to happen that Fallout does more on a PS console, when it seems that these games always do more on Xbox?

Also Witcher 3 isn't a FPS, and while Fallout 4 isn't a straight up FPS, consumers are going to look at it like it is. I don't see how saying "Witcher 3" is comparable when Xbox fans gobble up FPS's like crack cocaine.

Ya'll sound like the same people that were yelling at me how crazy I was when I told you June would be closer than everyone was giving it credit for.

There is a legit chance FO4 sells more on the Bone. Not saying it will but to totally discredit the idea is a bad call

Those games sold better on the best selling platform at the time where they were released. That's the pattern that you should notice. Not that it was a Microsoft platform. ESO has more users on a platform where there are no similar competitors for the genre, while PS4 has.

Neverwinter is a very competent MMO. Does it not count?

Did Hardline do terrible when there was Advance Warfare and MCC on the Xbox? No? Of course not.

Why would FFXIV have any impact whatsoever on ESO sales? Besides being in the same genre.

So now every title that shares another game in the same genre impact each other?

The userbase between ESO and FFXIV have likely next to no overlap at all

MMORPG tend to have a more fixed userbase. Once an user choses a game it tends to keep playing it and commit his time to that game in favour of trying others.

Warframe is a completely different genre of game and not really what most MMORPG players are looking for at all, no. Neverwinter may be competent, but compared to the big names it's relatively low-budget and "D&D Online" didn't exactly establish a pedigree as a powerhouse name in the space.

And MMORPGs are very, very different from shooters. As World of Warcraft (repeatedly) proved, people tend to play a single MMORPG. The popularity of one not only does not contribute to the popularity of others, it tends to actively detract from it.

No offense intended, it's just that you seem like a console-focused guy and probably don't know much about the (traditionally PC-centric) MMORPG business.

I wrote Warframe forgetting it wasn't a MMO. The little bit I did remember I thought it was, but removed it as I was wrong.

And yeah, I'm more console than PC, but I have dabbled in MMO's before. However, seeing as ESO is a one time purchase, and the fact it is Elder Scrolls, that should've done more I guess. Hell, ESO is more of an Elder Scrolls game with MMO elements than an MMO with Elder Scrolls elements.

You're missing the point. Witcher 3 had exclusive marketing with XBox One including some bundles if I'm not mistaken, and still sold more on PS4.

Certainly, Fallout may sell more on Xbox One. That possibility has a lot of facts behind it: Bethesda games were typically associated with Xbox last gen, the games ran better, and they sold more on 360 compared to PS3.

But then again, Witcher 2 was a console exclusive to 360 last gen and the sequel still sold more on PS4. PS4 is also likely to sell more copies of CoD, Battlefield, and Battlefront this holiday season. In turn, it might push people to also pick up FO4 on their new CoD box.

Thats sold more excluding bundle and to move futher on no correct fact unless I missed a post is we dont know the bundle count ela Destiny

No, its a pure MMO. There is nothing noteworthy or special about it. Basic fantasy RPG MMO. Elder Scrolls has little memorable lore. Just more rehashed Tolkien rip off stuff.

They do have great sales and better than PS3. I know there are lot of factors like price cuts, releases and so on, which doesn't make it comparable. But PS isn't the phenonemon as it is in EU.

But:
Relatively speaking, if you talk about growth and growthpotential, the US performance is not good. PS4 is beating PS2 and Wii outside of the US in a lot of countries. It is not in the US. It is just doing good, but not phenomenal.

Launchsales are a different matter, as all console launches were huge, because the circumstances changed since 2006/2007(socialmedia, higher initial production and so on). Even WiiU did good in this regard. Total sales are irrelevant in this perpective.

Taken from the Ubi earnings report (which is not representative):

%Sales

Q1 2014/15
Europe 44%
North America 44%
Rest of the World 12%

Q1 2015/16
Europe 43%
North America 37%
Rest of the World 20%

Yeah, one quarter and just Ubi. But if you do follow the trends it does fit the picture.
PS4 shows a bigger growth outside the US. That is why I said there are struggling there (pardon my english - it may have been the wrong term). They do sell a lot of consoles in the US, but the growth is not huge. So what I said was: I do think that they could drop the price in the US. And they probably will.

Why should the rest of the world subsidise US price cuts?

Newsflash: US prices have always been subsidized by the rest of the world. Soft- and hardware. I'm not saying that this is cool. It's just a fact. Compare prices (without taxes).

However, this month was actually good for Sony and MS.

I wrote Warframe forgetting it wasn't a MMO. The little bit I did remember I thought it was, but removed it as I was wrong.

It has MMO-ish elements, but it's a frenetic movement third-person shooter/character-action game sort of thing. I actually like it quite a bit, but I would guess that I'm in the extreme minority as far as fans of conventional MMORPGs and whatever it is you want to call Warframe is go (Space Ninja Espionage Action?).

The thing is, ESO wasn't originally a one-time purchase, and most of the traditional MMORPG knows it (and attaches some significant stigma to it). ESO was intended to be a full-subscription MMORPG and failed spectacularly, whereas FFXIV is one of the very few actual subscription MMORPGs to still be able to make the model work.

To MMORPG players, ESO's damaged goods. They would need, ironically enough, an FFXIV-style "remake" to have any serious chance of pulling away a significant portion of the subscription MMO audience for more than a passing visit. Basically, on XB1 it's currently the highest-profile, most expensive MMORPG available; on PS4 it's a late port of a mild failure; on PC it's a long-running joke that's impressive only in how long it took them to go F2P.

The vast majority of people that bought ESO on XB1 / PS4 know nothing about its life cycle on PC.

We're not arguing on that point. I'm saying you're going to find more people who are interested in MMORPGs (or just Elder Scrolls in general) but don't know much about them on a platform that doesn't have many of them, as opposed to one that does.

ESO's a game that very much benefits from prospective buyers knowing as little about it as possible.

Tamriel Unlimited is the closest to a "remake" I think this game could get. From what I read, it looks like it changed things for the better, and that is the version the consoles got, so it really wouldn't be a late port.

It's better than it was, certainly, but it's not really the sort of virtually from-scratch remake that was needed to make it actually good.

These threads are amazing.

Better versions of games and higher user base platforms sell more games regardless of bundles being sold on the competitor platform. That hasn't changed since ages ago, even last gen when Sony was doing marketing deals and bundles, 360 versions sold more and now PS4 games sell better. Why is this a surprising to anyone.

Last gen was different. Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Resident Evil...etc sold better on PS3. While Call of Duty, Madden..etc. sold better on 360.

This gen there isn't a demographic split, there's just a bigger split.

Elder Scrolls Online sold better on XB1 in the UK as well, why are people surprised when it did the same in the US?

UK is just mini-USA anyway.

I think the real question is whether Microsoft is going to drop the price again this coming holiday. They can't be too profitable with the Xbox One's price being where it is right now. I could wager that everyone is expecting them to lower the price because of the usual Microsoft Holiday Desperation™, but I'm starting to have doubts over whether they'll lower it again. I know Phil said himself that he wants to 'win' this generation, but I don't know if the Xbox team would be able to overpower the wrath of angry investors.

First, What angry investors?

Second, I think that Satya Nadella is the reason they will not drop the price. He wants to be profitable over all else. I think MS will take a small market share with Xbox as long as it is profitable.

You do understand that FF14 has an on going monthly subscription right. If I'm paying monthly for FF14 that just might be a deterrent to investing in another MMO. Do we even know enough to say how big the gap really was anyway.

Anyway ESO sales have no bearing on FO4.

Being good is subjective. Looking at friends list through xbox 360 who have bought ESO aren't playing it, nor are friends of friends. Sad thing about it, many have bought the game and only played 1 or 2%. What games I see them playing non stop are Destiny, Advance Warfare, GTAV and Minecraft. Some have played Neverwinter, but didn't stick with it long and went back to playing the aforementioned games.

I think this would be the best strategy for the remainder of this generation for MS. The Xbox team should strive for profitability and rebuilding the Xbox brand. They're already making steps in the right direction with stuff like BC and focusing on new IP. Keep this going for the next few years, learn from your mistakes, then hit hard with the next console. You don't have to be the market leader to be successful.

70k ahead of your competitor is not "head-to-head". It is literally not the definition of "head-to-head"

Also....relatively to what? I mean, you clearly meant in relation to XBO. Did you mean in relation to smartphones? Of course you didn't
