Nu Retro: What's a new game that nails the retro vibe it was going for?

I'm not talking about just look, but total experience. Just post whatever fits!

The Messenger - It's not as difficult as the series, but The Messenger really nailed the NES Ninja Gaiden games.

Shovel Knight - This feels like something I'd play on a NES as a kid.

Stardew Valley - I was hyped for this instantly. This nailed what I'd expect from a PS1 direct sequel of the SNES Harvest Moon.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
I enjoyed this one:

Good arsenal of weapons, nice level design and cool enemy roster. Basically has all the ingredients for a great throwback shooter and it complements all that with an amazing atmosphere. Great game. EDIT: AND THE MUSIC!

Crosscode: Looks and feels like a Saturn RPG the world forgot about. Awesome game.

Souldiers: The sort of games I wanted on the 32bit machines and never got.

Donut Dodo: Looks and plays like an authentic arcade from 1985.

Satryn Deluxe: Robotron style games with Spectrum style art/palette.

If you are going to make retro, then do it for real and make the game for the original console. Embed this in a nice emulator for modern consoles. At least that's how I see it.

Shovel Knight was a lot of fun, sure, but it is nowhere near a proper NES game. They picked the global color palette (and this should actually be verified, because the NES palette is incomplete and uneven, not 64 colors) and that's it. They said fuck it to all the other constraints lol.

Exophobia was an enjoyable game with a retro aesthetic and feel. Like DOOM, it has no vertical aim, so all action takes place on a horizontal field. While it is a bit more developed than DOOM in the sense that it has Metroidvania-esque gameplay, I felt like it could have been a PC FPS game from the 90s.

Retro is not only pixel art. I saw this the other day, an upcoming N64 style game. Wondered if it was worth a thread, but this will do nicely.
Releases on PC March 2025.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Shovel Knight is notorious for not adhering to anything resembling original hardware consistently. Fun game though. Shows you can enjoy stuff regardless and there's no reason to differentiate between games that attempt it & games that don't and simply go for the art style/scope they can/want.

The original La-Mulana before the commercial remake was pretty convincing of MSX.

Looks cool but man, that lighting and shadows are anything but N64. :goog_relieved:
