Among tons of decompilation projects for many other platforms, like the recently finished A Link to the Past (there's already Vita port), some Nintendo 64 decompilations will be finished this year or in the first quarter of 2023.

Serious question: is this legal?

I know with movies, it’s legal to back up your stuff, but not if you break the copyright protection to do it. Is there any copy protect being broken to decompile this?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Thread title makes zero sense.

Pretty interesting stuff, though for most players it doesn't change so much, we've been able to play these via emulation for ages (and popular games like GoldenEye/Perfect Dark even with high res & framerates, mouse and keyboard controls, Mario 64 has loads of content mods/conversions etc.).

Generally as long as the projects don't redistribute game assets and require them to be provided by the user, yes they're 100% legal. Of course most people couldn't care less and link to prepackaged versions and what not left and right once anything like this releases but it's not the creators' fault.

Edit: actually if any of them end up with code that is exactly as Nintendo's, they may not be as legal as other projects that attempt to recreate all behaviours to the letter with their own programming instead. Decompilation is generally just one step of the process. That's why OoT takes years for this.

Thanks for the educated reply. I am so interested in playing with these, but my state’s ethics board is cracking down heavily on copyright protection (which is how I know the specifics of what I can have and how I need to obtain it).

Coder Ryan Dwyer has fully decompiled both NTSC versions of the Rare N64 shooter – the version 1.0 release at launch, and a later re-release that fixed a number of bugs.

The aim of the decompilation is to allow people to create PC ports of the games which are technically legal.

This in turn means modders will be able to add new features or improve the likes of resolution, frame rate and texture quality.

According to the decompilation’s status page, the NTSC 1.0 and NTSC Final versions of the game are around 97.4% complete.

However, Dwyer points out that they’re essentially 100% complete and the missing percentage is a technicality.

“The ntsc-1.0 and ntsc-final versions are fully decompiled, but a small handful of functions are not yet byte-matching even though they are functionally the same,” they explain. “The status page doesn’t show these as 100% because it counts matching functions only.”

The project remains legal because it’s essentially recreating the game’s code from scratch, without using any copyrighted assets (such as textures or music).

Instead, any ports that emerge as a result of this decompilation will expect players to provide their own legally-sourced ROM of the N64 original. The assets from this would then be extracted and added to the code to create a PC port.

I think most people don't care. And I personally believe, given that emulating is not "easy" for casual gamers, that companies don't care either(for old games). I personally also believe that this ends up helping them in the long run, as gamers gets exposed to franchises they wouldn't given a chance otherwise.

Playing old games on new systems is good I hate the subscription it’s so Nintendo to flatten out something good, I’m still confident in my original n64 console and games.

ARE YOU FOR REAL

not only one of my favorite games of all time, but it's also a ps2 game and we need more ps2 decomps

I Hope this gets decompiled, I want a kh1 remake with kh2s gameplay and combat so bad!!!
The main character is not a seasoned fighter at all in the first game for lore reason. He's a random kid from an island. There is no reason for the character to do crazy moves like in 2. That's why the character attacks like he does because he's not a fighter until the second game. KH1 should stay that way. He's always referred to as just a boy. That's what he was in KH1.
