Four months after the events of Persona 5, the protagonist and Morgana return to Tokyo for a reunion with the other Phantom Thieves of Hearts to spend their summer vacation together on a camping trip. To determine the camping preparations, they use a popular application called EMMA. While going to Shibuya to buy the necessary tools, they pass by a rising idol, Alice Hiiragi, who gives the protagonist a card requesting them to input "Wonderland" into the EMMA app for a special event she is holding. Upon entering the keyword, however, he, Morgana, and Ryuji are transported into a mysterious alternative version of Tokyo called a Jail, where they encounter the ruler called King who is Alice's Shadow self, and a sentient A.I. named Sophia who is able to fight Shadows who joins their party. They learn that EMMA, similar to the Metaverse Navigator, enables them to enter Jails. Hearing rumors that people have been attacked by Shadows in Jails that leaves them behaving strangely in the real world, Joker and his friends once again establish the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Persona 5 Strikers is a gameplay crossover between Koei Tecmo's hack and slash Dynasty Warriors series, and Atlus' role-playing game Persona series. It features elements from both franchises, such as the real-time action combat of the former with the turn-based Persona-battling aspect of the latter.

Joker, the game's protagonist, is able to wield multiple Personas, which are gained through random drops or by defeating named mini-bosses in dungeons. These Personas can then be brought to the Velvet Room, where they can be fused to create new Personas. The Confidant system from Persona 5 is absent. In its place are Requests, a form of side-quests, and the B.A.N.D. system, where increasing its level can grant players bonuses such as stat increases. The B.A.N.D. levels can be increased through interacting with party members, winning battles, and hitting milestones throughout the game.

Players can form an active party of maximum four members, with Joker being the only character not removable as an active party member. Outside of battle, active party members can be swapped with the standby party members. Players can only control Joker in the real world but are able to control any party member freely when exploring the story dungeons. Exploring dungeons is similar to Persona 5, where players can use stealth to avoid enemies or may occasionally face the need to solve puzzles to progress. The 'Third Eye' also makes a return from Persona 5, where it highlights enemies strength and interactive objects. Should the alert meter of the dungeon reach 100%, the party is forced to leave the dungeon. The Alert level can be lowered by winning battles that are initiated with surprise attacks or by leaving the dungeon. Unlike previous entries of the Persona series, leaving the dungeon does not progress time and there are generally no demerits in leaving the story dungeons.

Battles are mostly initiated when the player character comes into contact with the enemy, where they can launch a surprise attack to gain a combat advantage if the enemy has not spotted them. Battles are also now in the form of a real-time combat system. However, players will use a command-based skills menu when using Persona skills. During the time in this menu, the battle will pause to allow tactical positioning of the Persona skills. If the party deals a critical damage or deals damage that the enemy is weak to, the enemy may be knocked down for an 'All-Out Attack' which deals a large amount of damage. All party members can obtain new moves, known as Master Arts, by controlling the characters manually and defeating enemies. If all active party members are knocked out in battle, a game over occurs. Will pick it down the road. It's better to avoid Royale right?

Original P5 is what matters for this one?
I mean if you haven't played P5 you might as well just play Royal, it's much better than Vanilla in everyway

it's just that there's story beats in Royal that will be completely ignored in Strikers

Since I only have a Switch, this will be my first Persona game (not a real Persona though I know). I fucking loved everything I've seen about it :messenger_smiling_hearts:

I am not keen on most spinoffs but it seems like this is a perfect example of a musou derivative done right.

Already beat Vanilla P5 but am tempted to eventually play Royal too.

apparently the PC version is having issues (long loads, crashing, performance hits) and max framerate is only 60fps :(

i really don't want to have to spend money to buy a Switch to play it. they better patch it on Steam.

why would you avoid the best version of the game?

Strikers is a sequel which ignores all the extra stuff that happened in Royal but that's no reason to ignore Royal. It's the definitive version of the game. There's zero reason for anyone to ever play the original game anymore.

Royal's extra content is largely optional (however, you should not avoid it in a first playthrough) and if you don't get that ending then the biggest differences are the stories of two characters. Neither of which are in Strikers so not a problem.

Playing it on PS5. Enjoying it so far, combat is quite fun.

Graphics or Frame Rate mode are both 60fps, game runs smooth as hell, loading times are non-existent.

My only niggle with the game: It really needs some kind of decent AA implemented, the characters just look really jaggy at times.

My thoughts exactly. One wonders how it's going to look on the Switch, a platform that already struggles with aliasing as is.

having put over 100 hours into both I do recommend a playthrough of Royal, just pick it up on a sale sometime

it was 50% on PSN back during the holidays so I'm sure it'll see that sale again by Golden Week if not sooner

I am shooting to finish my 1st run for Royal, hopefully by the time it gets delivered to me on Tues/Wednesday.... but rather unlikely at my pace.

Finally just begun the "new part", beginning of January.... But I've put already 150 hours into the main game, I'm actually a bit tired at the moment.

I may end up taking a short break (and maybe play something else), before jumping in strikers...

Just started and this is evident from the beginning. I'm already playing in Graphic mode. It looks kinda bad on my LG E9...P5 Royal didn't have this shit.

Wonder if there is any plan for a ps5 update...

I caved and got the digital deluxe version. The soundtrack is terrific. I'm enjoying the game as well. My big gripe so far are the visuals. There's a lot of aliasing in the game. I'm playing it on PS5.

Should I play this for the story. I played P5 and I'm seeing people say online that this like a sequel.

Its censored and therefore it is objectively the worst version of the game to play (unless you get the JPN version). Don’t give cunts money for a compromised version.

oh come on. yes a couple scenes were censored. for whatever it's worth i didn't think there was anything to get upset/offended about in the original game.

even if those scenes have been changed that's absolutely no reason it ignore all the QoL changes and new content the game added. you're willing to give up ~20 hours of new content, better pacing, improved combat...just because of changes that amount to like a couple minutes of a 100+ hour game?

lol

Censored in what way?
in the original version some gay guys hit on Ryuji. it's such a short scene that you probably would forget it after playing like 100 hours of the game. they changed the text in royal to make it sound less like they were hitting on him and trying to get him to dress in drag. there is another scene at a beach but it's just really more of the same.

some people, you can probably imagine who, got upset and offended. atlus changed it to appease them.

these people seem to have an issue with the gay guys hitting on ryuji but letting you date multiple adults is totally fine apparently. you can date your teacher, a doctor, journalist, and fortune teller who are all adults.

Like I said, you can still buy the non-compromised JPN version. I stand by my principles and don't come up with excuses to ignore them. If you want to get triggered by that, go on ahead.

i just bought the game! downloading it now. got the deluxe edition for £47 from cdkeys. the standard version is £37. on steam it's £55/£65. still saving a bit of money. could've waited until tomorrow to get it for £37 but £47 is still saving a bit and i get to play today as soon as it downloads.

so excited to finally get to play it

i wouldn't buy the japanese version because 1) i don't speak japanese and even if it has subs 2) i'm not making a new account for just one game 3) games will cost way more. it's too much hassle for something so silly.

you sure sound like the triggered one. stand by your principles. good on you. i honestly don't care what you do. i just think you're being stupid :)

You don't need to make a new account and buying the JPN version is literally the same cost as the ENG ver, sometimes cheaper depending on where you shop.

Also mate, you are the one relying on insults here. Clearly you project a bit too much.
you're going on my ignore list.

played the game for a couple hours! performance wise it's great (so far). i saw people saying it takes ages to load but it's nothing unusual. i do have a nvme ssd though so that might help. i don't know if people complaining about loading times were running on SSD or HDD. no crashing nor any stuttering/frame drops of any kind. the game looks good but they Anti Aliasing could be better as there are some shimmering lines around edges. UI text looks a bit low resolution. Increasing rendering resolutiong doesn't seem to do anything. i'm playing at 1440p and the UI looks like it's probably 1080p.

it's so good to have these characters back. again i'm only a couple hours in but so far the story seems interesting. the new companion is cool. the combat feels fun and satisfying! it's still early of course but i would say i'm enjoying it more than the combat in the main game. i'll see how i feel about it after i play more though.

overall i'm enjoying it and can't wait to play more tomorrow :D

I'd forgotten I made that OT, lol. I'll get it when it drops in price at some point.

I'd say Mystic deserves the props for the graphics more than anything, though.
(I think it was his work...)

I bought Persona 5, never got around to it and then bought Persona 5 Royal which I also never touched

Cue the thread for no new games in 2021...

Just started the new semester in Persona 5 Royal. This game and these characters are so good. So happy I know I still have P5S game waiting for me.

Sane people would realise the changes are minor and not worth worrying about. Censorship would be removing the scene but all they did was change the text/tone a bit.
Sane people would realise it's not about a minor change but the precedent it sets, what will bring in the future and the dangers of this slippery slope.
