Phil Spencer: We're not going to put walls up on our games

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
He seems to have lost a lot of weight. I think Chadwick Bozemans death has taught us that you never really know what someone's going thru so I'll i just leave it at, he's looks like he's lost a lot of weight.

He's also almost 60, not in his 40's like back in the XOne conference days.

Age catches up to everyone.

I'm almost 60 and I seem to find weight. I'm still fairly thin but the 4-5 pounds I put on during the winter stopped going away in the summer a few years ago. 😜

Still doing the boiled frog, it’s abundantly clear at this point from his messaging and their actions

Not clear enough for people to stop asking him about it

Doesn't look like that big of a change to me, he's just standing farther back and doesn't have the camera 2ft from his face like the other two people.

Regardless, even if it is a medical thing, hope it's not major.

Here he is in June 2024 and then in November 2024. It is a big change. It is probably ozempic.

What time is it?
Possible, but I'd say unlikely given how quickly he changed in five months.

Humans are frail and that frailty increases as they age. He could have some health issues or changed his diet or any other number of things that could have led to his outward appearance.

Perhaps. I certainly hope it something like that.

Looks like he lost 30+ lbs. He used to be thin/avg weight, then packed on probably 40lb busting out of this shirts on stage. Looks like he's back to probably 15 years ago.

I know that kinda weight loss. Either he's actually got an illness or he's stressing. Chronic stress can make you lose weight so fast because you barely eat.

why even boil it though?

How is this even a question? Microsoft makes billions of dollars through GamePass, 3rd party game royalties, and accessory sales.

As long as their customer base wants to delude themselves that everything is fine or this is the direction of the industry, they'll be happy to oblige if it means they're still generating revenue.

The reason why they're not producing as many Xboxes is because they weren't super profitable. So what did they do? They released a higher priced Xbox Series X with 2TB for 600 dollars to increase profit margin and they released an all digital XSX for 450 to improve retention. They released a higher priced Series S with more storage to increase profit margin.

Microsoft is no longer in the business of subsidizing their hardware. If there is ever any future Xbox hardware, the price of it will make the PS5 Pro blush, especially if it has access to Steam and other PC storefronts.

He probably single handely kept Xbox in business and somehow convinced Microsoft to Invest 100+ billion in gaming. I've never owned an Xbox in my life, but gaming would look dramatically different if it wasn't for Phil
I never thought about this, but now I agree with you. I appreciate the added perspective.

:messenger_tears_of_joy: Yep, the console war was over just not like he expected it.

I don't know how these warriors continue to still have accounts after this kind of public embarrassment. If I had made tweets like this as a fanboy only to get destroyed months later I would have shut down my account.

He makes money on youtube views... Colt's a clown, but he's making a living off of being a clown. The real clowns are the people who watch him and engage with him.

I wish they'd ask him more specific questions - questions that pin him down. For instance, "Are you planning to keep any games exclusive to Xbox/PC hardware, or will they all eventually show up on Playstation?" Instead, they ask him general, open-ended questions that allow him to just use general, vague feel-good phrasing.

"Put the games first" (and so ship to other platforms) is one of those phrases. It sounds so noble, so gamer-friendly, so "pro-consumer." But what it really means is "Put games' revenue first" (and so ship to other platforms). Hide the need for profit, pretend it's all about serving the games and the gamers. What a nice fellow.

Honestly more traditional XBOX hardware at this point doesn’t make sense when you are putting games on multiple platforms. I don’t want to see Microsoft go third party, but they may as well go full third party next generation if you are going to continue supporting other platforms with your exclusives.

I found it interesting during the direct showcase they showed PS5 as a platform for the games they announce. Meanwhile Playstation doesn't show Xbox as a platform for any of the same games being announced in their trailers.

Sony's treatment of those games mirrors their approach to third-party titles. Typically, their trailers for third-party games don't highlight other platforms, with rare exceptions for some PC releases.

Yeah but why would he answer something like that? “If you go down this path, why should anyone buy an Xbox” seems about the toughest question you can ask him and expect an answer and he did. And I don’t care for Paris and idk who the other dude is.

Phil looks like he has been hitting the bottle. What's going to be the ever-changing message? Wow, we had a good year with our software, let's make everything exclusive once again. LOL!!!

What a graphic description of Americans’ obsession with appearance and no control over medicines. Isn’t that thing kinda dangerous?

To be clear, I'm just speculating about PS. He could be fine. Hope so.

I really don't know if it is dangerous, but I stopped trusting doctor prescribed drugs a long time ago. I have relatives who have gone through rehab to get off the shit their doctor's gave them. But yes......America has a drug problem and it ain't the illegal kind.

Your mistake is seeing them as journalists and not what they are mouthpiece platforms for Microsoft PR.

Why would Microsoft PR want to "pin" down Spencer?

Everything that Microsoft showed at the Xbox Dev Direct was coming to PS5 with the exception of South by Midnight, which probably doesn't even warrant a port just like Redfall. Every single title, even the one they claimed they're publishing in Ninja Gaiden 4. Imagine Sony publishing Rise of the Ronin on Xbox. It would never happen.

All of these games are coming to PS5 as soon as the dev pipeline catches up. Those already working on PS5 games are obviously going to get there quicker than those who weren't.

The most interesting thing is going to be Halo and whether they port MCC or remake Halo CE and how long does it take to come out.

Microsoft would rather it come out after GTA6, but that could also result in a really bad fiscal year of simple declines and while Xbox isn't the focus of Microsoft shareholders after the ABK purchase, you can bet their stock will slide as a result. Do you think Microsoft wants to lose potentially billions in stock price vs the maybe 1-2 million Xboxes that will sell because of GTA6 but might not if people know Halo is going to PS5? The reason why Phil Spencer did this video is because they're going to announce Halo for PS5. My guess within the next 3 months, 6 if we're being conservative, but it could be much sooner.

Microsoft had their business update February 15th 2024 and they started releasing games on PS5 a week later with Pentiment... Feb 22nd... We already know Indiana Jones is releasing on PS5 in April and then Doom in May. If Halo MCC is coming out, my guess is it will drop in the summer and avoid CoD and GTA6. I still think we're more likely looking at a Halo CE remake that comes out next year built in Unreal Engine, but it could go either way.

Phil Spencer looks great IMHO. He looks far healthier both physically and mentally than he did throughout the Redfall/Activision acquisition period. He looked like he was on the brink of a mental breakdown throughout all of that.

He's nearly 58 and has some gray hair, but that's to be expected. I don't know why people think he's look sick just because he's lost weight and is no longer obese.

It seems like coming to terms with the new Xbox multiplatform strategy has also reduced a ton of stress. He's no longer stressed out about beating playstation and now just wants to see the massive studios be successful. His energy levels and positivity in this interview is a LOT better than the bitter guy he was a few years ago.... I also think he's being pretty transparent now. He's said repeatedly there's "no walls", "no red lines", games are becoming day-and-date....I mean, I don't know how you think there's anything vague about those statements?

No idea why they want to continue making console hardware.
Do you say the same about Google Pixel phones vs Android vs Samsung/Apple and other handset brands?

I hope Xbox offer better performance or unique features for their hardware that makes it attractive that way and not a walled garden. PC and Xbox console ownership with the same ecosystem is pretty solid, especially if a decent handheld becomes part of the mix too.

Except phones are sold for profit. Could be Microsoft abandons the subsidized hardware model though.

It’s not like he was 200 pounds overweight recently or something. He looked like he was having a long week. He also makes tons of money and can pay to have healthy food made for him and plenty of exercise time. Maybe I’m wrong but I thought the injection stuff was for like, morbidly obese people. aka most of America, but he wasn’t that big.

But maybe the rich are taking them now too just to lose a few pounds.

Certainly possible.

I'm still sort of wondering that they've dropped near 100B and all that time could have had a major loss leading push hardware wise with some pretty extreme specs at an irrestible price.

Instant install base and without the need for exclusives while being another channel for this publisher strategy.

They have lots of avenues and clearly are intent on supporting new console hardware so I'm hoping it's not just a hat in the ring entry and goes one/some of a few ways -
  • Specs beyond what other platforms can reasonably support financially
  • Unique features only their hardware can support
  • Lower price point massively loss lead
  • Multiple SKUs more extreme than S vs X of current gen, give us a real performance option
  • Hybrid handheld model similar to Switch e.g. dockable, upgradeable, docked = higher perf etc.
  • AR/VR/handheld revolution
  • AI perf out the ass, leveraging all those years of Azure AI investment

But had Xbox been in no.1 spot, I am sure they are going to put up an iron dome.
People will ignore that, they're doing this so their now owned studios games don't collapse to zero. Had he got the install base that wall would have been up for everything. games, crossplay, everything. It was only 2021 he was saying they bought Zenimax because of exclusives for xbox.

Their strategies are due to competition in the market and their performance in it. People are benefiting because they have to try and compete as best they can with their publishing now. That's why all this talk of a market of no competition is mostly hot air. You're seeing the effects of competition, but some just don't like who's winning this time.
