Anyone played the JP import?

I picked it up at the weekend, but there are a few points I'm unclear on.

What is the significance of the tachyograph?

At one point in a cave, I had a D-Pad graphic with red pikmin assigned to down. I assumed this was to split them into groups ala the Y button, but pressing this gave all of my pikmin a glowing light instead of the usual flower/bulb/leaf. What is it supposed to signify?

Pretty sure this makes them all faster than normal for awhile or until they get hit, I haven't played Pikmin 2 in awhile... Need to get back to it and finally beat it. You get those dpad graphics when you see the blobs on the ground and you suck them up or you get 10 of those balls off of the flowers.
