PlayStation cloud streaming is very impressive

Sony tempted me into upgrading my Essential Plus membership into Premium for the next few months. It was worth it to me so I could demo the beta game streaming to my Portal. I had tried Stadia and x-cloud before and was very unimpressed with the resolution and lag. I was not prepared for what Sony is able to do with cloud streaming. There is a tiny bit of lag (no different than playing the Portal on my local network) but it’s good enough I can play fighting games, which is notable. Whatever black magic they are using is very effective, as streaming games to my PS5 Pro is basically flawless. My setup is gigabit fiber with hardwire to the PS5. Maybe this is the best-case use scenario, but the results are remarkable enough that I’m keeping Premium when it renews in April. I am wondering if the rest of GAF is having good experiences with PlayStation cloud streaming?

It’s all great until more people starts using it and you’re stuck in queues to play the games.

Xcloud is absolute garbage. I’m sure some of it depends on how close to a server you are but Xcloud is easily the weakest for me. Terrible picture quality, and tons of latency.

GFN was very good but it’s very expensive for the good tier. I’m not paying $20 a month and the base tier literally has ads, long queues, and very short playtime. No chance I would ever subscribe to anything but the highest tier and the last time I checked even the middle was 1080p but at least had RTX but that could have changed.

When I tried the PS streaming it was great. Picture quality and latency was miles better than Xbox and on par with GFN.

As far I'm aware xcloud streaming only streams in 1080p at 60fps. PS Now has 3 resolutions 4k 60fps on ps5 titles 1080p on ps4 titles and 720p on ps3 titles thou the latency is slightly higher on ps now compared to xcloud but I guess that makes up for higher resolution with better iq and image quality

I have played GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming and PlayStation Premium streaming all on a wired connection and WiFi on my Steam Deck. GeForce Now is amazing and Xbox Cloud is a very close second. PlayStation Plus is good on a wired connection, but the app on Steam Deck is extremely buggy. Sony just needs to fix the app and it will be much better.

I have no problem with all of the cloud services, but only xcloud made me put in the online queue system. I have to wait about 30 min finally log in.

I haven't used it a lot but it's been pretty solid when I have used it. I remember playing hot shots golf on there for a good bit, a game that is basically unplayable with even a tiny bit of lag and it worked nearly flawlessly.

I should mention though, like you OP, I'm at a gig for bandwidth and hardwired to my PS5. I'm also in a large major city, so I'd have to assume I'm really close to some Sony servers.

Truthfully, I have put meaningful time into, Geforce Now, Stadia, Xcloud, and have sampled PS cloud (occupation calls for travel year round). If you have a good connection (not speed, but good packet loss and latency), and are near a server, then they are all impressive. I feel that many that have issues, are often pointing the finger at the wrong person. It isn't the service, it's either your connection, proximity to server, or device (sometimes more than one of these). I would use PS Cloud streaming, if they released it on other platforms besides their own device.

Point the finger any direction you want but these services are being offered as gaming solutions to the mass market. It is their problem to solve if they want mass market adoption.

I’ve had great experiences from Stadia and PS+. Xcloud is eaisily the worst and it’s even still limited to 1080p and in beta. But it was also smooth at times. Never used GeForce before.

I'm playing Xbox Cloud through firestick and I'm getting way worse resolution than compared to PS5 Cloud. It's not even close. Latency is about the same. But would happily pay 5$ a month if it's a cost issue. For me, so many games are unplayable on Xbox cloud because of picture quality

There have been rumors of Xbox Cloud coming out of beta soon, which it has been in for years. That would make sense given Microsoft is going to open up their mobile store front.

PS Cloud very impressive though, I do agree

I’ve been lurking and commenting on GAF for 15+ years and never thought to start a thread before this. So that should tell you how I feel about this particular topic. I hate the potential of a “streaming only” future, but I can sort of see how it COULD work. All I know is my daughter played Astrobot on streaming tonight (because I hadn’t reinstalled it after getting my Pro) and she had no idea it wasn’t running locally. Neither could I.

Same setup as you OP. Gig fiber, hardwired PS5. Streaming works great from PS5, or from cloud.

Funny because it used to be bad, at 720. When you can play fighting games, FPS, or racing games, it works.

I think it will live side by side with downloads for a while still. Most people still have pretty shitty internet.

Disclaimer: I was in Texas about 1 year back, close to a central server located in Austin for both GeForce and MS with 2GB Fiber and 1 ms latency. Not sure where the PS one is but all felt like I was playing local. My issue with PlayStation was the games on offer, not the service itself since I've played an finished alot of Sony games and am new to being a Green Rat. Ask for CONTEXT you fucking whores.

XCloud of a steaming pile of hot garbage.

No it isn't.

Are you ok? Sounds like you used GeForce Now 2 years ago on the highest tiers. Here's what it looks like now and this is without the upgrade of 240 FPS and Reflex for Premium Tier.

It also works in a country without any servers albeit high latency, I'm in Pakistan right now and my games still work. XCloud and PS won't even load.

Tell me you've never used any of those streaming options without telling me you've never used any of those streaming options lol.

I know bro. Not everyone can handle my sexy.

Oh god I hope not, cause Xcloud blows.

Try is near a good server blade.

I'm in central Europe.
We do have MS server blades near us, the quality just isn't there, forget about a 4K big inch TV or monitor even, it looks bad even on a phone screen ffs.
And it's not a wi-fi+BT SoC problem either (which does indeed contribute to bad streaming) tried it for years on good smartphones and again, the quality isn't up to par, heck, even on an XSX (wired) the quality is just...bad.

GFN is indeed brilliant - no disagreement there, same as Sony's Cloud streaming which is (now) fantastic.

I played Banjo-Kazooie, Tooie and Gears of War on Xbox. It felt absolutely great on my 4K screen. Damn near looked legit. Never had an issue. Is it perhaps maybe the kind of servers being offered? Europeans are always given the shaft from my understanding.

Don't know what to tell you Fah, again, i'v tried it extensively here in Italy with bad results.
I'm on a 1Gb connection, Wi-Fi 6 router, all my devices support at least Wi-Fi 6, i have zero problems with streaming.
Again, GFN (had a 6month sub that came with my LG C2) was brilliant, anything Sony streaming related (be it remote play or Cloud Streaming) has been absolutely fine but, Xcloud's picture quality was always bad with noticeable macroblocking - input lag-wise was nice/good though, not gonna lie, it's just that the PQ was no bueno ;)

I mentioned the Wi-Fi + BT SoC thing 'cause on older or shitty phones, the SoC DOES in fact play a role in the streaming quality since having both enabled (Wi-Fi + BT at the same time) leads to stutters, macroblocking etc since the hardware can't keep up.

Cheers

This never happened to me on PSCloud, or anybody else hense why you used a screen from Xcloud
Yeah, I’ve never used PlayStations solution. I just assume that their, and anyone else’s, servers can get congested as well if a lot of people use them simultaneously.

Absolutely defeats the purpose for me.

Ive been using ps cloud streaming since psnow, and it's always been reliable. Visual quality and latency has really improved over time.

I've been playing some cloud games on my portal and it's good enough that i don't use remote play, only will use remote play for ps5 pro enhanced games that are decent enhancements.

Really waiting for sony to roll out the ability to play your purchases through cloud streaming on the portal, was rolled out to ps5 months ago.

Ridiculous, imagine starting Netflix to watch Squid Game or something and you can’t because a lot of people are already watching.

Does anyone know if this could be eliminated entirely in the near future? Or are games just cursed with this compared to music/movies?

People tend to forget that Sony bought Gaikai with all their patented cloud technologies, this has contributed a lot for PS cloud to be way more impressive that whatever MS is doing

I've never seen any waiting screen in my life. I'm sure it's not a recurrent thing otherwise we would hear about it more.

Also...comparing streaming games with streaming a video that you can't interact with makes no sense.

The added latency on controls means streaming games as opposed having them downloaded or physical will never be an option for me. The latency added from just HD TVs and games with poor frame rate is already bad enough as is.

Nice shill thread though.
