PlayStation GAAS Initiative: A logical idea, horribly executed (23 minute Colin Moriarty video)

Easy to say as an arm chair QB….

The space is volatile, you can have good GaaS that fails and trash GaaS that does extremely well (like marvel rivals)

Sony has been hit or miss but had their fastest selling game ever with HD2.

Please explain what makes Marvel Rivals “trash”. Should be good for a laugh. No need for you to go in depth about which GaaS title you think was good but failed, we all know. The one you predicted would be a smash hit on Steam 😆😆

Most of the games are simply uninteresting, that includes Fairgame$.

Bring out Warhawk focusing on vehicles, destruction, tons of weapons, no load-outs, no rechargeable health, and you got yourself a hit.

It's something that fans of Sony SP games should have been rooting hard against from the start. Just look at what happened to Rockstar and Valve when they shifted focus to gaas.

We know next to nothing about Fairgame$. The least we can do is keep an open mind about it. The only thing we've seen is a brief, meaningless CGI trailer, and a description making it sound like an extraction game.

They made literal billions of dollars. It's why everyone is trying to get one going.

And Sony sees where everyone is spending time and money on their own platform. Spiderman 2 cost over 300M to make and most players were done with it in a week. Fortnite was a last minute pivot to a battle royale after PUBG blew up and is still printing cash like nothing else years later. It makes complete sense to try and make something that will stick, and they kinda sorta accomplished that with Hd2. Only really dumb moves they made were the entire Concord fiasco and trying to get their old school single player studios to make GaaS. Easy to say in hindsight I guess but they should’ve spend all that money buying Hoyoverse instead of Bungie and Concord devs. Fairgame$ seems extremely likely to be a flop too.

One thing Sony has learned is that without anyone competing against them they can sell a ton of consoles without a strong first party anyway. There will always be a market for a box that sits under the TV and plays Fifa, GTA, and Fortnite. They gambled on GaaS, lost, and suffered no losses because of it.

This doesn't benefit SP consumers though. All that money hasn't resulted in more games. Rockstar wouldn't even give us a GTA5 story expansion because of GTA Online being so successful.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
they at least need to make these GaaS free and no political crap, would give them some chances to attract more users/.

Concord is nothing speciel, not free, and characters were ugly. Its already DOA.

Colin is a muppet, but Sony having a GaaS push without the following franchises always felt dumb to me

Destruction Derby rather than Destruction All-Stars
Motorstorm
Coolboarders/Xtreme
SOCOM
Killzone
Resistance
Sunset Overdrive
Dreams
Twisted Metal
SingStar
PlayStation Home

I think all of these had way more potential than doing a hero shooter clone or a live service God of War...

Why not lean into franchises that have a history of multiplayer and in genres that aren't already oversaturated?

SOCOM could have supplanted Siege, but Sony has already let them get a head start on Siege 2.

Remaking Killzone 1-3 and Resistance 1-3 should have been easy and even if live service elements failed, you would have still sold to single player gamers.

Rocket League and Mario Kart can work easily, but they can't make a modern Twisted Metal work? That's crazy.

There were tons of ways they should have been able to monetize Dreams. Dreams PC and Dreams VR were obvious.

That's 12 projects right there and I bet at least 6 would have been successful and most importantly they have genre variety.

I've let it stew for 12 hours.

Colin suffers from the Dunning Krueger effect. He is the brand of dumb I've only seen while listening to local sports radio talk shows growing up in Buffalo.

On July 26th 2018, the Buffalo Bills draft Josh Allen.

On July 27th 2018, a brand of stupid calls into WGR 550 and complains about how Buffalo drafted the wrong guy. People know Josh Allen is the wrong guy because they watched a few draft analysis videos of him on YouTube. This makes them more capable of addressing talent than Buffalo's highly paid GM.

Bungie may become PlayStations Josh Allen, or they may become PlayStations Kaiir Elam (Buffalo's bust of a 1st round pick from 2022), we obviously have to see them play for a few years. Bungie has to release Marathon and one or two games after that before anyone knows the value of their purchase. Colin doesn't play Live Service games. Colin doesn't play Bungie games. So Colin Dunning Krugered himself for 23 straight minutes here. I end my meditation with a picture...

The worst thing about Colin is that his two cohosts either aren't intelligent enough to push back on some of his dumber ideas, or they're too afraid to push back.

That creates a dull mental model about any given topic.

In their defence it really seems to me that GAAS is an inexact science. But the one hit can be very lucrative.

They would have been better served trying to tie it in with an established IP, ie SOCOM, Killzone or Warhawk. What Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami said above. Though I suppose the TLOU multilayer thing would've been that, and we saw how that finished up.

It's not an inexact science, it's a more complex, less understood science. Multiplayer today is where single player games were in the 1980's. Industry knowledge is only now beginning to explode. The kids who grew up loving Fortnite and Minecraft are now getting jobs in game dev. GAAS will continue to grow significantly over the next 10 years as the industry learns what's needed.

Yeah, it's really just Colin blowing steam and tweedle dee and tweedle dumb just largely echo his thoughts with no pushback. Makes for bad conversation. And Colin is the only one that gets really aggressive with his thoughts at times.

Colin's greatest strength is his ability for him to communicate dumb ideas as if they are smart to the less informed laymen.

Well I hope you're right, as I think when done right it's immensely enjoyable. I don't think GAAS is the scourge of the earth like some think. But I wouldn't want every game to be one either.

You can't buy Hoyoverse (Tencent that is much close to them tried to acquire minor stake and still failed) and even if Sony could, price tag would be probably higher than ATVI (Mihoyo has more revenue and more profit than ATVI).
Bungie was relatively cheap company that has experience in gaas stack, other suitable companies are either already incorporated or would be much costlier.

I listened to it. While I think it’s too early to call on Bungie, it’s certainly not looking good there. Destiny has fallen and the studio has churned a lot of talent. But Marathon could be a hit, who knows.

The rest of that is spot on. It makes sense for Sony to invest in GaaS, but so far they have stumbled mightily.

If Sony had learnt from this, they would've finally told Bungie to stop fucking around and make a proper fucking Marathon game with a single-player campaign worthy of the name. They can keep their extraction shooter bullshit as a separate multi-player mode.

I don't think it was logical. Sony dominated the single player market especially when it came to reputation and goodwill mainly because they filled a massive vaccum as other publishers didn't want to release as many SP games.

Don't get greedy and be happy with what you have. Try for 1 or 2 maybe but not them all.

Nothing says bad blood quite like getting a clip from a Shuhei Yoshida interview and not naming the podcast lol.
