Sony Computer to unveil PlayStation 3 at next year's E3 expo in Los Angeles

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Sony Corp will give the world its first look at its next-generation PlayStation 3 videogame console at the E3 entertainment expo in Los Angeles next May, said Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

"We will exhibit our next-generation game console at E3 next year," said Kutaragi, who is also an executive vice-president of Sony Corp, the world's second-largest consumer electronics maker.

At a news conference in Tokyo to discuss Sony's plans for its critical games business, which accounted for about two-thirds of its operating profit in the past year to March, Kutaragi did not provide any details of when Sony would begin to make and sell the PlayStation 3.

PlayStation is the world's top-selling videogame console.

I just read that too. Don't know if its been discussed on here already though.

Supposedly playable hardware too, not just mockup in a glass case.

If thats true (and its a quote from a Sony guy), then thats surely a go for a 3rd December launch in Japan (or FY05 anyway), and late summer/fall 06 for the west.

Don't see MS getting a lead on them this time. Gonna be an interesting fight!

At a briefing with developers, suppliers and media in Tokyo, Mr Kutaragi said it was planning to showcase its new console at next year's E3.

"There has been some talk that development is not going well, but we expect to have a playable version at E3," he said.

"We are pushing ahead with that schedule in mind."

oh, I've just noticed the other thread way down there somewhere on page 2. only two pages? Is this what GAF has come to while I've been away having more children?

The first concrete announcment of Sony's plans, and only 2 pages? come on! We've had tons of speculation about Xbox plans and timings for a long time (will they go early, will PS3 be 2007?). Now we kind of know Sony's timings, and the others are the ones we don't actually have hard info on.

Need more speculation and hypothesising. Stat!
