Riders Republic is underrated

I discovered this game about a year or so ago, and it has been one of the few games that still gets regular attention from me

has anyone else played this game? for those unaware, its the spiritual successor to Steep, but introduces all sorts of other ways to ride such as mountain bikes, bmx, skateboards, etc. the game is open world and takes place at several real national parks that were pushed together to form a single map. all online players share this world with you in real time.

you hear people talk about how games aren't fun anymore. how you have to get through like 90 minutes of narrative and tutorials just to get into gameplay. if you're looking for a game you can just pick up and play, I strongly recommend this, especially if you enjoy extreme sports arcade style games like Tony Hawk.

you can pick up the complete/ultimate/whatever they call it edition or dirt cheap, and the amount of content you get is insane. it's also on gamepass.

don't get me wrong, the game has its issues. lots of the issues you would expect with a Ubisoft game. but I think it is damn fun and a blast to explore the world. as a nature nerd who loves national parks, I sometimes spend hours stoned just exploring the world

What time is it?
I don't need anything close to realism in an extreme sports game but the bike portions of that highlight video just look ridiculous.

Yeah, people always ask what happened to the SSX/Coolboarders/1080 Snowboarding games of old, but Rider's Republic is the answer.

Descenders is very good if you want more realism, but I prefer the biking in Riders Republic

a lot of the stuff in the video is extremely hard to pull off in practice. the game feels a bit more grounded when you actually play it

I love Descenders. The high level game play and modding scene is pretty nuts with that game too.

I only tried the demos/betas for Riders Republic and it just felt bogged down by a lot of Ubisoft's trappings.

I miss Downhill Domination.

Awesome game but pretty niche for some reason.

I really, really liked Steep as well but that also didn't really find an audience.

Ruined by online shit
Should have had a proper single player
I don't know dude, some of the most fun I've had is during the mass races

for those who haven't played this game yet, I didn't mention this in the OP but the game features MASSIVE online races which are utter chaos and fun

it's really not that bad dude when it comes to Ubisoft trappings

if you get the complete edition or whatever, it unlocks everything you would need from the store. you get literally every single sport / mission in the game.

sometimes I have the most fun just logging in and wandering with no purpose. none of the Ubisoft trappings show themselves the entire session

you can play this game any way you really want to

edit: fwiw I think I paid $10 for the complete edition with literally every single DLC ever included

yup. I don't get it. I'm convinced that people like these games they just somehow aren't on their radar

I turn 40 this year and this is exact sort of game I remember loving to death as a kid

When this was on PS plus like a year ago or so I gave it a try and there was just something about it that felt off, I don’t know why but I didn’t love it. Anybody here try the game Shredders? The snowboarding game. It looks pretty decent.

Steep was better. You felt like you were on the mountain. It was fun and also paid respect to wilderness that you were exploring and riding through.

Rider's Republic was a complete 180 in tone. Hyper exaggerated, cringe, low attention span and superficial take on extreme sports.

Basically---

I completely agree, the vibe in Rider's Republic completely pushed me away, it was insanely cringe and tried too much to be "cool", I also really hate this trend where games are full of ridiculous costumes and you see everyone online wearing flashy purple shining outfits or giraffe costumes or whatever... It's, I don't know, tiring.

I already had some issues with Steep, the gameplay had some issues (special mentions to the G force system completely ruining all the fun, never letting you do anything), but at least the atmosphere was really nice, it was a good hiking / exploration game with sports. It was a relaxing game.

Rider's Republic gameplay is pretty bad, it feels very heavy, the bikes in particular have so much latency, it felt awful to play for me, and the atmosphere is straight up terrible. The visuals were also a huge let down compared to steep, the world was ugly and didn't make me want to explore.

I restarted SSX 3 recently, again, and it's still the best extreme sport game ever made.

Steep has only snow sports and flying. which is why I play both. you can grab both games for a few bucks, so you don't really have to decide.

I prefer bikes to the snow sports too.

the skateboarding in Riders Republic is also surprisingly good.

if they could take the tone of Steep and introduce the sports of Riders Republic, that would be amazing

edit: the announcers are fucking cringe and annoying though. the music gets old too. I wish there was a way to just play your own music through the game.

Shredders is the best pure snowboarding game on the market, there are a couple others like "the snowboard game" or Mark McMorris Infinite Air that do a couple things better but are really starting to show their age.

Steep and RR are very Arcadey similar to SSX which is fine in its own right, but those games never properly captured the essence of snowboarding in my opinion.

Tony Hawk games are some of my favorites games growing up. And I had especially good memories playing Aggressive Inline (very similar to TH) and Skate games. I also enjoyed Bombrush Cyberfunk even though it was very different from TH. Are any of these games similar (Steep, RR, etc?)?

Feel free to recommend any games in this vein. Looking forward to Helskate (THUG meets Hades; I think it came recently and it was a janky mess, hopefully when it comes to console it’s better). The Skatebird one I tried and didn’t like.

I haven’t given RR a chance because it seems like it’s just leaderboards and shit, is there some sort of progression? Or is it all online bullshit, season passes, etc? Oh also, the game needs to have some killer OST. I also haven’t tried the 2 or 3 “realistic” skateboarding games, but willing to try them if they get recommended.

there are all sorts of types of progression, although what most people generally focus on in the start is grinding to get good gear

you can unlock better snowboards, bikes, etc. as you play. you unlock it either by doing campaigns, where you basically have bunch of missions you need to progress through. this is purely single player.

you also can unlock better equipment by just leveling. and you can level by doing virtually anything. online races. trick competitions. even just riding around doing whatever you want in the open world allows you to level.

outside of that you can take on sponsors and complete specific missions for them to unlock more equipment

there's also weekly challenges, a season pass that unlocks as you level, etc.

I strongly recommend getting the complete edition. you will get access to every single different type of equipment in the game.

multiplayer there's everything from races, trick competitors to battling with missiles and crap
