Everybody but EA bailed on the NHL so it just gave them exclusivity without having to pay for exclusivity. Hockey games don't sell as well as other sports so it made sense to bail back then but with the money sports games make from microtransactions these days I'm surprised 2K never brought it back to test out the profitability now.
