According to someone on Resetera on July 21, employees are expecting layoffs since the game apparently bombed:

I have a friend of a friend who resigned from the company. He is expecting massive layoffs. Does not bode well sadly.

">The devs announced the game had 500,000 players since release. For comparasion, games like Tchia had over 1 million players"

Tchia... won?

Game clearly (and sadly) flopped.

Normally when you see those "X players" kind of posts they are in the millions. Posting about a mere 500k is just weird and does not inspire confidence at all.

Note that they are not even touting sales, just players..

Considering Steam numbers, probably 80% were on GamePass.

Strangely enough, their numbers might turn out better than or equivalent to Hellblade 2, likely at a vastly lesser budget.

Barely a peep about that game from Microsoft since it was released.

Don't think it's near there. They were under 1K high concurrent. Hellblade was over 3K on Steam I think.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, Hellblade 2 was a bust. However, this was even worse and doesn't have Papa MS (dubious support as that is) to fall back on.

A post on Resetera referencing a friend of a friend resigning because they thought the studio was gonna do some layoffs?

Its also kinda weird the poster livers in the UK A44 is a Kiwi studio........the game isnt even two weeks old what hey had future sight and could tell it wasnt going to sell well or what?

A44 Games also has less than 100 employees......the superfund will protect them, if the Gamepass money didnt already.

They got a Gamepass payday.
They are part of Kepler who all share resources, they arent that big a studio, they are gonna be fine.

Shh, don't pour water on the hopes and dreams of the anti-DEI brigade

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised, like at all, but this "My Uncle at Nintendo" or "Phil's shelf" level rumor should be taken with a lake full of salt.
That said, I'd expect any fraud of an insider to pick a higher profile target for their bullshit, so that way it'd spread out faster and make for more juicy headlines, not some no-name, mid as fuck developer such as the Ashen and Flintlock studio.

Which is all to say that I have a hard time thinking about why would anyone lie about this.

To pile on the hate.....with insider info about the studio doing layoffs like 3 days after the game came out.

The post is likely bullshit but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. Pieces Interactive, a similarly small studio, got taken behind the shed after Alone in the Dark bombed.

I've literally hated the Flintlock demo because of talentless and uncontrolled Wheadon-speak, though the game was more or less okay. You just can't hide from annoying and godawful screenplay.

Turns out I was not alone.

Pieces Interactive was owned by Embracer...............................................we are praying for Crystal Dynamics and Eidos.

A44 is part of the Kepler Collective, they all share resources and support each other.
They got a Gamepass paycheck from this game and the Kepler group have had some bangers over the last couple years which should have allowed them to float one failure.(assuming this game is a failure).

Sucks for the studio but the game didn't look that good and reviews seemed pretty underwhelming. Also I know there was the pandemic but nearly 6 years is quite long in between releases, even if the team is rather small, specially for a game that howlongtobeat is saying takes under 10 hours to complete.

Not to mention that the release date wasn't great either. It's too close to Shadow of the Erdtree, even assuming most souls fans have already beaten it by now I'm probably not alone in wanting to play something different afterwards, not another lower quality soulslike.

You're comparing a team of 16 to 60. You think ms will pay a ton for this game to be on gamepass to offset development and marketing costs? Delusional.
