Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Allow me to also jump on the "Super Monaco GP was the shit!" train. It was a wicked racing game, and something that blew the water out of NES racers. It was one of my "Christmas Morning" games i got for it (the others being Sonic 2, Aladdin, and Castle of Illusion)

Really? The reviews I watched/read didn't have much praise for GP2. Well far be it from me to insist on that. If the game is actually good, it's just a bonus for me then.

The only downside to the second one is that the first one is so amazing, there wasn't a ton of room to improve! That's what reviews at the time kind of nailed it for... being to much the same. On the other hand, it didn't feel like it could get much better! This was also in the days before yearly sports games for the most part, so gamers were conditioned to get sequels that actually mattered and were more than roster updates.

Perceptions change.

New Genesis pickups this weekend - big game sale in some guy's driveway. All CIB in good condition:

Puggsy - I saw a bunch of ads for this while perusing old EGMs, the price was cheap so I figured "why not"? It's a slow-paced puzzle game made by Psygnosis. Animation is pretty good but something feels slightly off in terms of hit detection like many older western games. Nothing really grabbed me about the game so far but nothing turned me off.

Buster's Hidden Treasure - Side scroller based on Tiny Toons. Seems like a pretty long game though I've only played the first "world", then got stuck at a big mazelike level and stopped. Seemed decent but the jump controls are real weird. Jump height is entirely dependent on how long you hold down the button - just tapping it will make you slightly hop, and you seem to plummet down as soon as you let go of the button. It takes a bit of time to get used to.

Super Hydlide - Haven't played this yet, the Hydlide series is known to be one of the worst RPG series in existence, but I can't resist an oldskool RPG with cool americanized boxart :p

Yep, agreed with Dave, Buster is awesome and has a lot of Treasure people before they broke from Konami.

Also, how much was Hydlide, that's actually an uncommon, so if you got it for under 20, you got a good deal, especially if its complete.

Crash - you can find replacement cases & print out covers, i did that for a number of my recent additions.

Where is considered the best place to acquire such replacement cases/covers?

I've been trying to scout eBay for just official boxes without the games, but they don't seem to show up very often. It seems not many boxes were separated from their cartridges.

I love the selection of games I have, with only a few titles missing (I'd love to snag a copy of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles), I just hate that they're rolling around in a box. A nicely lined shelf would be awesome.

There's a big culture around Universal Game Cases and custom art to go inside the cases. Might be a good way to get a slick cased collection on the cheap.

I remember the EGM where Super Monaco GP got three 9's and a 10. Because of that, it was the first game I purchased for my Genesis (apart from Altered Beast, which came with it). Game was awesome and blew away all console racers at the time.

this and the PS1 will forever be my favorites

Ehh...The boxart for Super Hydlide isn't americanized.

It's just cropped.

The game is pretty unique. It has a lot of design-decisions that we take for granted today.
Weight is a big part of the early game. The first two items you have to grab are the money changer and the bank card. Money gets heavy, and when you get too much stuff you can barely walk. Also you need enough strength to wield weapons and armor you equip, or else they're useless.

Not only do you need to eat regular meals, you also need to sleep. If you go a day or two without sleep, you can't damage anything, and your health rapidly depletes when you're starving.

There's also a morality system. The only monsters you should kill are the hostile ones. Killing neutral enemies locks you out of certain mega-important items iirc.

i don't know how many other people here beat Super Hydlide, but...i think the ending's worth talking about. i saw it sometime around Cosmic Fantasy 2, so....yeah.

right, ive done just that for SNES/NES etc but i don't like how universal ones look on the shelf next to genesis ones. i ordered 1 batch of these, but there's mixed reviews so ill post back when they're here.

Similar thing happened to me when I went into the market for a SEGA CD. I pay the guy, he gets back a few days later and tells he actually didn't have a working one in his inventory... so he sent me a busted one and refunded me my money... weird.

it sucks. ive had no luck with this shit lately...ah well, working on a few projects so i figure i might as well open it back up & douse shit in alcohol/try again, not like it can get any worse. i think i may've bent a few of the conductor things that stand up outta the board too, no doubt that aided my plight.

Checking this thread makes me want to keep increasing my Mega Drive collection.

Anyone know good places in the UK (other than eBay) to look for Mega Drive games at a reasonable price? I am not after rare or expensive games.

Recently replaying Comix Zone, good god, what a great game, is amazing even today.

And

The music

Rocks

(yeah, i know, remixes, but good ones)

yeah, I always liked Howard Drossin's Grunge/ Blues inspired soundtrack in Comix Zone. Another thing I always liked about Comix Zone is how the story never really interrupts the gameplay. It was a pretty unique feature for its day, but the game's simple story was done through talk bubbles and it kind of flowed with the gameplay. You could just ignore it all and play through the game or stop and read everything.

The closest thing I have ever seen to a modern styled Comix Zone is this game here on XBLA and PSP called Unbound Saga:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm1VnKSDL1Q&feature=player_detailpage#t=231s

The way the characters jump between panels and the giant human hand that comes in and paints enemies on screen is very Comix Zone like. Though this game didn;t seem to get very good reviews.

Comic Zone! Thats one I forgot about!

Also was Streets of Rage 1 any good? Never played that...and so far i've only got 2 since 3's music makes me question what Yuzo was thinking.

SOR 1 is fantastic, it's just that 2 does most of it better. the music is amazing, if that's what you're looking for too...also, cops with napalm!

SoR1 has some of the best original tunes IMO, it will feel a little stiff to play after the sequels but it is still a great game, especially in co-op when you both know what you are doing.

http://youtu.be/5hq5QIYdYO4?t=44s

It's a shame adam is not in the other games and they killed him off :| best character next to Blaze Fielding

One more question, any real difference between the JP and NA/EU versions aside from the names?

They completely redid the story in SoR3, versus Bare Knuckle 3 (the JP release), and the redone story is pretty lame compared to the original one... see this for full details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bare_Knuckle_3#Adaptation_differences Of coures though, the original version is in Japanese, though there is a fan translation patch.

For the first two games though, they're largely the same in either region. The first game is simpler than the sequels, there wasn't much to change...

SoR 1's OST is the best of the trilogy. Hands down. In gameplay, though, it can't compare to 2.

Sure, although I prefer Blaze's design here to the sequels. And the background city art is very attractive in certain places with the muted, limited color palette.

Yeah, the character graphics of course aren't as good, but I still really enjoy most of the background graphics of the first one. And I still like the music of 1 the most in the series. But for gameplay, 2 is the king.

I actually like the music in 2 more. Something about the first game's music seemed kinda... flatter than its sequels, I guess? I don't really know the word, it just didn't seem quite as energetic for a good chunk of the songs, or the instruments were a bit lower-quality here and there. Composition-wise, at least, it's very much sound, and it's certainly leaps and bounds above SoR3 (which I don't really hate, but it's not very good listening music). I just prefer SoR2...

Yeah listing to SoR and seeing the game in action, I definitely want to own it at some point, but SoR 2 still wins best soundtrack for me. There are literally no bad/average tracks.

I always wondered out how that official SoR2 styled remake of SoR1 was. I remember reading about it a while back. I think it only ever came out for mobile phones.

Edit: Ah, Bare Knuckle Mobile was the game.

Just personal preference. There's a lot of 2 that I like, don't get me wrong. 1 overall though is just more melodic to me.

This is probably my favorite song of the whole series:

Streets of Rage Moon Beach

In any event, I still remember hearing the Streets soundtrack for the first time and couldn't believe a console was pumping out that kind of bass. Was the very first time that I just had to hook a system up to a stereo instead of relying on crappy TV speakers.

picked up Gauntlet 4 yesterday and Star Wars + Virtua Fighter for 32X

why is sonic 3 so hard to find?

also it's so hard to not order these sealed new copies of games on amazon.

^aw, you lucky shit. how much?

the genesis was $30 not in box , its a non HD graphics model but still has the good sound card ( you can tell by the placement of the inputs)
32x was 50. it didn't work at first so i had to take it apart and mess with the ribbon cables.

^heh, after another project tomorrow i'm hoping to do just that one more time...this guy refunded $12 of my $20 32X, might as well try again. really hoping it's just that, as i hate all these failed projects about me right now.

that SOR 1 remake with 2's graphics is interesting, but it's messing with my head! and i can't underestimate the importance of 1 personally, as it was such a pivotal game in making SNES final fight look like shit...man, that was a bigger talking point in classic lunchroom console wars than i think FF XIII ever was, haha

I bought a Mega Drive earlier this month and I'm having a lot of fun. Particularly with this old favorite of mine called Dune II: Battle for Arrakis, the port is pretty good and the music is much nicer than what I remember from my Gravis Ultrasound soundcard at the time.

Yeah, he's very prevalent. At the end of Stage 6, regardless of whether or not
you save the general from dying
, once you defeat the purple jetpacking boss guy, Adam
takes out the rest by gatling-gunning them down from a helicopter
. Also, assuming
you saved the general and go to that stage
, then at the end,
he saves you from Mr. X's exploding base and helicopters you the heck outta Dodge
.

picked up streets of rage 2 with box and manual today for $16. I think I have a problem, Seattle makes this too easy

I've got that too, the music is awesome. I believe it was done by frank klepacki of Command and Conquer fame

So, i just got Nobunaga's Ambition from IrishNinja. Super pumped to play it later on tonight. Hopefully he enjoys his Kangaroo adventures in SOR3!
