Anyone notice how later Mega Drive (JP) game cases have the hanging tab like the western releases?

Saw this billboard on the way to school today. The EMP Museum here in Seattle is having an exhibition called The Art of Video Games, and this is one of its promotional billboards.
I am so giddy over this! I never imagined that Gunstar Heroes would get this kind of larger-than-life public exposure, especially 20 years after its release. So awesome!
Anyone here ever try their hand at make custom cover art for those universal game cases? I know you can make requests at thecoverproject.net, but I never thought about asking on GAF.

There are the occasional 16-bit covers in the custom cover thread. If you make a request in there, there's a fair shot someone will do it.
I replied on the SNES thread, more info there.
Here's some custom Phantasy Star and PSIV covers I made using their templates
Master System color is white, you heathens!
PS1 was remade on Mega Drive with FM sound, so maybe it's a nod to that?
It wasn't actually remade, they just built the master system adapter inside the cart with the master system game in it.
But sure, I'll give him that...![]()
I thought they redid the soundtrack too. Was that Japan-only?
By the way, whats the best solution to cleaning dirty Genesis labels? I'm not sure if its that the games are sun damaged or that they just have a layer of dirt on the labels, but they seem a little darker in tint than the normally should be.
The darkening I'm assuming you are talking about on the cart label can't really be helped. It looks like years of sweaty palm grease have seeped into the label... Maybe it's some other thing that causes it.
Yup thats exactly what i'm talking about. Heh oh well.
I thought Super Fantasy Zone never came out in america, or are you just looking for a Japanese cart?
Re: Custom cases
Amazon sells some third-party Genesis/Master System style cases but the plastic they use is really soft and the tabs that hold the carts in place tends to break. The film that holds the artwork in place is also glossy instead of matte like real Genesis cases. At $6 for a three-pack I don't think it's worth it.
What I do instead is this: Anytime I see a cheap boxed genesis game for a dollar or less (typically sports) I'll buy it anyway and use it as a donor box. Then I print custom or replacement artwork for my cart-only games that need cases. It's cheaper than the aftermarket clamshells on amazon, and blends in with my collection better since they're matte.
I never bothered with UGC because I'm not a fan of the clear plastic. Black is beautiful.
ps just got back in town & got your Streets of Rage 3, so awesome! and thanks so much for the extra manuals, totally gonna leave you good feedback in buy/sell later man
The Master System didn't have the FM Synth in the US. However, it did in Japan. Phantasy Star is one of the games that uses the FM Synth for music (in Japan).
Since the Genesis "re-release" of Phantasy Star only happened in Japan, it uses the Japanese Rom, which uses the FM Synth of the Master System.
So, technically, the Japanese-only Mega-Drive re-release of Phantasy Star sounds better than the US Release of Phantasy Star on the Master System. However, it sounds the same as the Japanese Master System Version.
Personally, I think the FM-Synthesizer actually sounds worse.
Here's a video with both versions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDPvSoiCAWg

I've got the Japanese Megadrive Phantasy Star, it does not support FM synth because it needed extra hardware on the Master System in order to play it. It sounds the same just as any US Master System game does when played with the Power base Convertor.
Yeah, I've got the JP Mega Drive version of PS1, too. Normal sound, no FM.
FYI: If you boot said game on a JP Mega Drive (or a US Genesis switched to JP mode), the game will display a Mark III splash screen upon boot. If you run it on a normal US system, no such screen will show. AFAIK the game runs exactly the same other than that.

Gawd, Thunder Force IV sounds incredible through a set of good headphones.
If you think that sounds good, try Lords of Thunder <333333
I need to pick up some of the damn Thunder Force games already. Blatant glaring omission in my library.Gawd, Thunder Force IV sounds incredible through a set of good headphones.

Except that Lords of Thunder's soundtrack is constantly drowned out by super-loud FX.
I believe this would be the right place to ask: is there a stand-alone solution for recording video (mainly composite) from old machines like the Genesis. Of course it should not introduce much lag.
Went to the game store yesterday and came back with a couple more Genny games amongst the pile. I grabbed Cool Spot and (on GAF's recommendation) Super Monaco GP.

I agree for the most part.Shhh... keep it down. Don't want to stir up Aeana's wraith!I feel the same way... US SMS music for the win!
Megamix is a Sega CD game now. Just grab a CD-R.In light of the fan made Unleashed mod hitting Generations today, I figured i'd ask if there were any worthwhile Sonic fan games made via repro carts? I have no idea what happened with Megamix or if they saw the project all the way through.
I think I prefer the FM synth, honestly. Like, despite growing up with a Game Gear, I've recently come to dislike how the PSG can only really put out one kind of square wave, compared to the NES's 3/4 types; it tends to make all the games sound kinda samey, which is rather disappointing.

The FM version doesn't really sound like an improvement in a lot of cases.
