It sounds like Capcom's service - not mandatory but you get some bonuses and free in-game stuff if you sign up. I used to buy weapons with money I earned in (RE Revelations) Raid mode on there and then transferred them to my game. I really only play Atlus games, though, so I'm not sure how much I'd gain from signing up for a Sega account. Might look into it a bit more, thanks for the heads-up.
Edit: Just signed up. It's pretty bare bones so far and there's no passwords. So, to sign in, I have to enter a code they send to my email - which is taking quite a while to show up. It will probably get smoother over time. I'd imagine, but seems a little rough right now.

Nobody is going to sit down and watch Steam hoard all the user data it gets for hosting their games, they will want to retain a copy of their own and be able to track usage and purchase trends etc.
I can definitely see them including this in their console games too, just like Ubisoft does.

Ubiconnect already allows that and people still shit on it. I'm playing POP: Lost Crown rn, and I can already sync a saveslot on their own cloud and it carries through to other platforms.
Forumposters need to understand that the big online pushback against alt launchers isn't because they are all inherently bad and offer zero good services, rather, it's out of some weird self-volunteered serfdom to Steam.

Or, maybe, people that play games from 30+ publishers don't want to waste their time with 30+ service platforms and as many accounts.

If it's an outright requirement to play a game you already bought, I can see the annoyance. But I was pleased, for example, to find I could move Pokemon TCG from my phone to a bigger tablet just by linking my Nintendo account first. It wasn't a requirement, but when I had need I was able to use my existing Nintendo info.

No one is going to the expense of rolling out something like this without requiring its usage later on. I would not be surprised if Sega linked this to their new retro subscription service too.
It's a costly endeavor, especially when you factor in privacy laws and how they require certain cyber security and cloud hosting measures to be in place. It's not a joke.

LOL I noticed how they peppered Sonic throughout the registration pages lol.Valve offers all sorts of user metrics, analytics & data. But it's anonymized.
Nobody needs to make something that's "better than Steam", these games are their business and you are their customer (if you wish).
They deserve to be able to have a direct line to you without the actual middleman in this case (Steam).

But we are talking enterprise level, Sega (and others) want the detailed information for their own games. I guess if they want to track user data this is the lesser of two evils (the other being using some kind of DRM that sends the information to a server like a launcher).

Theyre the ones actually making the products and services, and you're the one buying them. At considerable expense to both parties.
Why should Steam be the ones dictating your relationship with the devs you buy games and mtx from?

Ubisoft requires their stupid buggy launcher for Steam games. If not for that and if account wasn’t mandatory, nobody would have cared.
For this SEGA account crap, as long as it’s not mandatory, once again, I don’t care.
If they allow save game uploads between platforms I will even sign up (if that gets verified).

You likely can't just implement a cross-save function within the Steam launcher API.
You either do so as part of a larger suite, or you don't do it at all.

You probably need your own setup, yes. Larian does it with their launcher as an example. Other companies have done it as well.
Difference is their launchers aren’t mandatory and they don’t break Steam Deck integration like Ubi, EA ior Rockstar do all the time.

But it makes me buying games less, when they are forcing extra services on top of the product which I never wanted. As I mentioned, make it optional...everything is fine.
If I could buy the game directly from Sega than I had the same issues with forced "extra services" on top of their products. Its not Steam who is binding games to their servers. Its all up to the decisions of the devs. You can sell yr game on Steam as you like. Stuff it full of with account crap and DRM or just release the files gog-like.

Lots of games have accounts outside Steam and sell just fine. Lots don't and they bomb.
This might not apply to you or me personally, but I honestly think they are two separate issues tbh.
And they're now choosing to start capturing usage data for some purpose.
A dev is allowed to change their mind.
Did they send you an OTP on your email? If so then it's likely you will always sign in with an OTP.

The amount of effort Capcom put into their online service for how little it was promoted or known among gamers was absolutely crazy. There was SO much gameplay data and unlockable stuff on there.... Like you could build neat looking dioramas that all of 2 people would ever see. They should have integrated that stuff into the games themselves.

I remember the dioramas. I collected all the options for RE6 and had a bit of fun creating various diorama scenarios on my account lol.
There was also the events for their various games too - go do this in this game or that game - with a time limit and rewards for completing the specified challenge. I was always checking in on what was a available and it was all just so much fun. I ended up having some trouble switching over when they changed it from RE.net to Capcom - I'm all good now but fell off with the site due to that.

You can fuck right off with that. Ubishit fumbled my account info with updates and I had to crack four of their games I payed for to even play them. Still on my Steam account but unplayable otherwise.

the difference is that it's not optional on PC.
every non-optional third party account requirement should honestly be banned from Steam.
they have enough market power to enforce it, and they should.
