Sega Titan Video in FPGA; the Sega Saturn in Arcades

I am sure at least people are familiar with Die Hard Arcade in arcades but other than that one game in the US the STV or Sega Titan Video board really didn't hit much in North America, but there is an entire arcade platform from Sega that uses the Sega Saturn hardware along with game cartridges vs cd-rom on Saturn and some of the games are exclusives or have improvements over the Saturn variants.

And today on MiSTer FPGA the forked STV core is out and playing the large majority of the library including some classic exclusives like Maruchan De Goo (yes an arcade game based on the ramen noodle brand...and its a legit hidden gem

So for the FPGA users on GAF...brand new Sega core to try today!

I never liked the idea of arcades using cheaper console oriented hardware. For me the point of going at the arcades was to be dazzled by the awesome graphics and performance of the more powerful custom boards we could never have in our homes. Otherwise i could just stay at home.

I think this parity between arcade and home systems caused the death of arcades in most countries.

Definitely a big factor. I fired up some Model3 games on my Batocera rig the other day and was like….damn, these graphics are CRISP. Not only still today but the 3D visuals absolutely shat all over what the PS1 or N64 could produce at the time

Even the Model 2 shat over those consoles. Let alone Model 3.

It allowed for more games without the massive expensive of boards that cost a fortune to produce. Sure they aren’t the prettiest but if the cheaper Saturn/PS1 arcade boards didn’t exist neither would the majority of the games that ran on them
