I love playing Donkey Kong Country trilogy on my SP.

The last game I got on it was Final Fantasy VI cib. I wish gba market was cheaper but here we are.

GBA + PS2 have such an immaculate catalog I feel like you're just lying if you can't find 100 games to enjoy yourself with.

To me they embody what was so great about that era of gaming: small production budgets and development times, big results, creativity and plain fun.
yeah no joke the top 25 gba games are must plays!

we all know the gems but this list is not teh best but the best for veteran gba fans..

Problem is, just about every SNES port is worse than the original.

Especially Yoshi's Island. The GBA port lacks some effects, has worse colors, worse sound quality and they used the crappy Yoshi's Story sound effects instead of the cool original SNES ones.
You beat me to it.

Avoid all SNES ports on GBA like it's the plague.
Today you can play everything on Analogue Pocket so why would you use the worst version ?

The new content in GBA versions is often useless or bad. Not worth it, especially if it's your first time playing the game.

GBA has a cool catalogue, but for its original games.

Samus Returns is a remake of the GameBoy Metroid 2. I don't recommend it and would suggest you seek out AM2R instead. Super Metroid, AM2R and Zero Mission are my favorite Metroid games.
nah m8 zero mission is the way you need to replay OG metroid
I'm damn glad to know I've got a brand new metroid to play, for whatever reason I never got to play it.
I'm not saying buy a GBA and SD card cartridge but yeah
It's fine, I'm also not saying I might have an analogue pocket fully loaded.

It's great having the option though. Isn't it forgivable since it's handheld ? Doom 1&2 GBA is awesome 👌 it might even be better than snes doom actually ??

I just played through Metroid Zero Mission.
I can never decide if Zero Mission, Fusion, Super Metroid, or Dread is my favorite 2D Metroid. They’re all literally so good that I tend to lean towards whichever one I’m playing at the time.

has to be the very confusingly-named Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario 3 which counts as SNES since it's actually a port of the Super Mario All-Stars version of the game.

GarHz5TbsAAONFD

  • all-stars graphics + Mario 3
  • extra levels on cards! Which were like the first glimpse of the kinds of hybrid levels they'd create for Mario Maker many years later: combining & mixing elements from all 2d Marios (even vegetables from Mario 2)

Absolutely this. I also hate the fact that they added the stupid girly voice to Link in A Link to the Past. Ruined the game for me, the original is superior.

Unfortunately, pretty much every SNES game ported to GBA is better on the SNES anyway. Especially if you use emulators to get the same save functions that the GBA ports got due to being playable on the go.

The graphics are worse. The screen estate is smaller. The sound is invariably worse - I don’t think there’s a single game that sounds even remotely comparable on the GBA. In Nintendo’s first-party games, they added those obnoxious voice clips - I swear the Mario and Zelda ports are borderline unplayable just because of that. And if the GBA had the same buttons as the SNES you could at least say that the gameplay had to make no compromise, but no. Removing two buttons and then making like, half of their own GBA games SNES ports might just be the most egregious big-brain move Nintendo ever made.

Yeah, there’s some good things here and there. Making the Yoshi coins actual collectibles in Super Mario World made exploring the levels much more interesting - too bad the field of view has been reduced so much. The extra levels in Yoshi’s Island, and especially the e-Card levels in SMB3, are really good (and incredibly evil). But most of the rest is lazy and uninteresting.

I personally enjoyed the SNES ports to GBA a lot. I find that they were well adapted quite often, with good efforts on the HUD, screen size, enhancements.

My personal favorite pick, I played a ton of this game. It is actually a collection of SMS/MD ports though :

pstcga0f.jpg

This was a godsend. Played all three games on the go, with great efforts made on adapting to the resolution with a good window layout. Loved it.

Other picks :
- Mario Advance, loved all the enhancements, finding the Yoshi eggs etc...
- Mario Advance 2, with all the additional coins to find
- Mario Advance 4, played it many times
- Final Fantasy I, II, IV, V and VI : really enjoyed playing all of these, and these were the first time we got a French release as well

Great console !

Nowadays I play all GBA games on my RG406H. Perfect handheld system in terms of size, layout and resolution. A must for GG/GB/GBC/GBA. I also pay for the NSO, but it needs many more games. We are not quite there yet.

All the Mario games more or less.

Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
Mario Advanced 4 (or 3) the one with Wart as last boss.

Somehow I found the cape flying from Mario World easier with the GBA than on the SNES version. No idea why.

Best controlling Metroid game, snappy movement but not tanky like Fusion and not floaty like Super.

Battlebus imprisoning me \m/ >.< \m/
I put a lot of hours into Final Fantasy IV on GBA. Was awesome to have the game while traveling around.

Ultimately it was a pretty poor version and the sound was shockingly bad.

First, be polite. No one insulted you here.
And lol, GBA versions are ugly as hell, sound like shit, and are way easier than the SNES version.
Hacks for :
  • GBA's script exist for SNES version
  • All the QoL from GBA version which are toggable.
It defies all logic to suffer through that GBA quality. So I guess it seems to be specifically made for you...
bruh.....

so sexy

Second, big fail here, those levels are the extra levels from SNES version... way better than the secret levels from GBA which are just okay.

Last, your posts made a good point advocating why SNES versions are better.

So maybe :

I always thought the GBA was one of the worst consoles ever, if you compiled a list of my favorite gba games, probably be more than half of it are just SNES ports. DKC trilogy, and SMA trilogy (fuck yoshis island) carried the console for me.

I only played the ROM, and it was worth every second on Visual Boy Advance. Despite having a GBA, as a teenager, I couldn’t afford and/or find all the carts I wanted in Brazilian territory.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Final Fantasy VI was such a mixed bag on the GBA. On one hand, the script was VASTLY improved and the game featured character sprites in the dialog boxes. Spells like Cure2 were correctly renamed to Cura, like Fire3 is Firaga - lots of little changes like that make the game more in-line with later releases in the series.

However, the game censored the scene where Celes was being beaten by the guards. It also has noticable slowdown in parts, especially while flying in the airship. Screen real estate is at a premium, so fonts are smaller and enemy placement on the battlefield is changed.

Thankfully nowadays we have the Pixel Remaster version, especially on PC where you can mod the character movement speed to not cause stuttering.

People in this thread acting like nerds saying AKSHULLY THE GBA VERSION IS WORSE THAN THE SNES ONE is missing the point, and we all know that anyway. We got portable versions of many of Nintendo's best games, this just wasn't possible in the past without some massive battery chewing device like the Nomad. The games played well enough and were enjoyable, we aren't talking about Sonic GBA here. It also introduced those games to a younger generation that maybe did not know about them.

I suppose for a handheld at the time these ports were good enough.

But nowadays there is no reason to play them. It's preferable to play the SNES originals.

DOOM, sure, GBA port is better than the SNES one performance wise mostly. But why would anyone play either? They are both very bad compared to so many other better ports.

I agree. It's the same reason I prefer to play JRPGs on the Switch now, even the ones that also release on the PS5. Sure, the PS5 version looks better, is higher resolution, and has a higher frame rate. Objectively, it's the better version of most of these games. But I can't play it on an airplane.

Snes remain the better place to play the original that's for sure, the only reasons to me are to collect and to play on the real hardware for the sake of nostalgia but also having the original tactile feedback , original screen and sounds.

Putting the cartridge in and pressing on and the og hardware etc.. even though gba ports are inferior, they're charming for their own reason.

What is unbelievable is the fact that Pixel Remaster, which is like the tenth time the game gets re-released, still needs some fixing by users to play correctly.

I replay the Castlevania games on gba often. They're so damn good. Metroid, Sonic, Megaman Zero and Battle Network were great too.

GBA had a lower resolution compared to the SNES and the screen was awful too, which is why games look worse. Also sound quality on the gba isnt as great as the snes.

That's definitely not my take on things. I'd say it's one of the peak handhelds of all time, certainly a competitor for greatest.

The SNES ports aren't the main draw, it's the amazing spinoffs like: Metroid Fusion, Minish Cap, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Golf/Tennis RPGs, Mario & Luigi, ...

So many incredible games that are basically "what if ___ SNES classic had a sequel?" and fully complete entries in their franchises -- and made at a time when SNES-like 16bit gaming was non-existent on all other consoles.
