So when does Hollywood demand a remake of Dune?

A movie that does not need to be remade, but we know it will inevitably happen sooner or later. So it is up to us to strike first.

Who would you like to see direct the sci-fi masterpiece?

Who would you cast in the lead roles?

Speak now, or forever have a Dune directed by Michael Bay starring Shia Lebeouf as Paul.

I personally would love to see a trilogy of sorts. But I don't think this generation could handle the high concepts the novel puts forth.

Heresy. The Shia Labeouf Dune movie should be directed by DJ Caruso.

But seriously I dunno.

This. The only way I'd want to see it is if it were done right... and that won't happen with today's "Marvel Bayformer" audience.

Same reason we'll never see Rendezvous with Rama on screen, ever.

What high horses you guys are on.

You think the previous generation would enjoy it more then? You know there where people back then who hated 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not everyone was some enlightened guru who enjoyed the finest of arts.

Dune definitely deserves a remake, but i don't think anyone will ever get it right.
Lynch's Dune is interesting but it took too many liberties to my taste. Visually very interesting, if not faithful to the book (eg Arrakis' sky is silver, not brown-yellow-orange).
That SciFi channel miniseries wasn't much better in this regard though, while somewhat closer to the book... eh.

EDIT and if Dune is filmed, i think Messiah and Children should be filmed as well. While God Emperor is interesting, and good, i don't think it, or the later sequels, should be adapted. They don't quite feel the same as the first three books.

I speak as one from a generation that actually read books, mostly sci-fi/fantasy.

It isn't that there isn't a market for heady sci-fi, rather that Hollywood has realized that that market will largely go see the films marketed towards a less sophisticated demographic. Hence we don't see nearly as many of them now, as when all sci-fi was a risky venture.

There will probably be another Dune film/show, but either it will be an expensive project with the soul of the story watered down or a faithful rendition on a smaller budget.

there is no denying that Dune is a risky production. I for one hope it stays on the fringe of Hollywood.

It does, or at least could use a remake. Shia may be shit but Kyle MacLachlan and Sean Young were awful as well. The effects look really dated and the villains were too over the top for me liking.

I don't know if Peter Berg is still doing it, but he was supposed to be doing one.

As for the statement in the op, you are incorrect.

Both the film and the TV miniseries were flawed, there is a place for a remake.

Surely Asa Butterfield will play Paul?

I could actually see an entire trilogy happening. Or at least, I could see them planning to make a whole trilogy if the first one makes enough money. I mean, it's not like anyone in Hollywood is gonna greenlight a big-budget summer tentpole movie that isn't gonna be milked for innumerable sequels.
But then you know they'd split the third book into two movies, the dickheads.

The movie was playing on TV the other day, and I caught it somewhere in the middle. I know it's unfair to judge it from there, but I simply could not get into it. Other than the general weirdness, it just felt very dated.

Peter Berg was trying to get one made for a long time. He supposedly was going to use a screenplay by John Harrison, who made the great (but very low budget) Sci Fi mini series.

But things got in turn around, and Berg left. Paramount had the rights for a bit I think, but they since evaporated.

I am still waiting for a huge budget, faithful adaptation of the book. I know it will never happen, but I think James Cameron would make a killer Dune film.

If HBO decides to go sci-fi after GoT , Dune a great choice.

This would be fantastic as well. No condensing, just put everything in there and make it epic as fuck.

That entire statement could probably be applied to any David Lynch movie.

I agree that the movie feels dated but that kinda works considering the history behind the Dune universe and how artificial intelligence doesn't exist anymore.

Dune has a lot going on -- a lot that is mentioned in passing or implied in writing that would have to be expanded upon in a film. Lynch tried to do this in his film, and succeeded in certain aspects and failed horribly in others. So yeah, it'd probably have to be a trilogy or a mini-series in order to fully capture all of that. The SciFi channel mini-series was good but it was just so low budget and lacked a certain 'oomph' that would have made it exceptional.

I think Tarsem Singh could do an interesting take on it.
Different kind of weird than original - but it seems to fit what I remember of the books in a way.

Joseph Gordon Levitt as Paul

Kevin Spacey in a fat suit as Baron Harkonnen

Sean Bean as Duke Leto

Treating remakes like major league sports games is part of the reason why movies suck. It's not their chance to "redo a really great movie but with A list stars this time. "

There has to be a better reason than that.

I really enjoyed the SciFi mini-series including Children of Dune. The only thing it really lacked was a bigger budget.

With everything going on, it really translates better to some sort of mini-series.
